Sinus Floor Augmentation in Presence of Mucocele Eroding Maxillary Sinus Wall: A Case Report With 3 Years Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: The maxillary mucocele is a slow-growing aggressive lesion and a mucous-containing sac lined with epithelium that occurs due to ductal obstruction and self-limiting injury. Rarely, it may be associated with non-specific symptoms. It is characterized by bone resorption due to its expanding behavior. Reduced height of bone and sinus pneumatization associated with pathologic lesions located in the floor of maxillary sinus may impede sinus augmentation. Therefore, careful diagnosis and management of pathology before sinus floor elevation is important in determining its recurrence and

Bone Quality in Resorbed Posterior Maxilla Affects Osteogenesis After Sinus Floor Augmentation: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Compromised bone quality and quantity in the posterior maxilla are widely recognised as significant risk factors for implant failures. This study aimed to (1) assess the bone quality of the resorbed posterior maxilla both radiographically and histologically and (2) evaluate the impact of native alveolar bone quality on osteogenesis following maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). METHODS: Patients presenting advanced posterior maxillary atrophy (residual bone height ≤ 4 mm) underwent MSFA via a lateral window approach using deproteinised bovine bone matrix (DBBM). B

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation using sponge- and cotton-like graft materials in a rabbit model.

OBJECTIVES: Bone graft materials commonly used for maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA), including hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), are mostly granular and have poor handleability. HAp/collagen composite material (HAp/Col) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) have shown promise but their application in MSFA as bone graft materials remains unclear. Here, we investigated the bone-forming behavior of HAp/Col and β-TCP/PLGA in an MSFA rabbit model. METHODS: Male Japanese white rabbits were used. HAP/Col or β-TCP/PLGA was randomly appl

Volumetric changes and graft stability after lateral window sinus floor augmentation: A randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: The present investigation compared the stability and volumetric changes of two different grafting material used for lateral window sinus floor augmentation (LWSFA). METHODS: Sixteen patients with a total 20 maxillary sinuses in need of LWSFA were included in the present study. The sinuses were grafted with either 100% anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM) alone (Group 1) or a mixture (0.8:1 ratio) of ABBM and mineralized cortical allograft (MCA) (Group 2). Cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) was obtained pre-operatively, and at 2-weeks, and 6-months after LWSFA to perform linear

Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation Using an Equine-Derived Graft Material: Preliminary Results in 17 Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Sinus floor elevation with lateral approach is probably the most frequently performed reconstructive procedure to rehabilitate posterior maxilla when a bone deficiency is present. Different graft materials have been proposed and tested, often with high clinical performances and predictable results. Histological analysis is required when evaluating new materials. We investigated human biopsies retrieved after sinus floor elevation procedure by histomorphometric evaluation to test the performance of an equine-derived bone grafting material. STUDY DESIGN: Seventeen consecutive patient

Bilateral maxillary sinus floor augmentation with tissue-engineered autologous osteoblasts and demineralized freeze-dried bone.

The pneumatization of the maxillary sinus often results in a lack of sufficient alveolar bone for implant placement. In the last decades, maxillary sinus lift has become a very popular procedure with predictable results. Sinus floor augmentation procedures are generally carried out using autologous bone grafts, bone substitutes, or composites of bone and bone substitutes. However, the inherent limitations associated with each of these, have directed the attention of investigators to new technologies like bone tissue engineering. Bone marrow stromal cells have been regarded as multi-potent cell

Porous titanium granules used as osteoconductive material for sinus floor augmentation: a clinical pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Resorption of grafting material may lead to unpredictable long-term results when rehabilitating the resorbed posterior maxilla. Nonresorbable, osteoconductive bone substitutes may therefore be an advantage over autogenous bone grafts. PURPOSE: The aim of the present pilot study was to test titanium granules as bone substitute in patients planned for augmentation of the sinus floor prior to or in conjunction with placement of dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with uni- or bilateral edentulism and need for augmentation of the sinus floor were included in the

Histological outcomes on the development of new space-making devices for maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have pointed out that the mere elevation of the maxillary sinus membrane promotes bone formation without the use of augmentation materials. PURPOSE: This experimental study aimed at evaluating if the two-stage procedure for sinus floor augmentation could benefit from the use of a space-making device in order to increase the bone volume to enable later implant installation with good primary stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six male tufted capuchin primates (Cebus apella) were subjected to extraction of the three premolars and the first molar on both sides of the
