The scalp hair collar and tuft signs: A retrospective multicenter study of 78 patients with a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Hair collar sign (HCS) and hair tuft of the scalp (HTS) are cutaneous signs of an underlying neuroectodermal defect, but most available data are based on case reports. OBJECTIVE: We sought to define the clinical spectrum of HCS and HTS, clarify the risk for underlying neurovascular anomalies, and provide imaging recommendations. METHODS: A 10-year multicenter retrospective and prospective analysis of clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of HCS and HTS in pediatric patients was performed. RESULTS: Of the 78 patients included in the study, 56 underwent cranial and br

Imaging Spectrum of Calvarial Abnormalities.

Calvarial abnormalities are usually discovered incidentally on radiologic studies or less commonly manifest with symptoms. This narrative review describes the imaging spectrum of the abnormal calvaria. The extent, multiplicity, and other imaging features of calvarial abnormalities can be combined with the clinical information to establish a final diagnosis or at least narrow the differential considerations. Prior trauma (congenital depression, leptomeningeal cysts, posttraumatic osteolysis), surgical intervention (flap osteonecrosis and burr holes), infection, and inflammatory processes (sarco

Cerebral developmental venous anomalies.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are the most frequently encountered cerebral vascular malformation. As such, they are often observed incidentally during routine CT and MRI studies. Yet, what DVAs represent from a clinical perspective is frequently not common knowledge and DVAs, therefore, still generate uncertainty and concern amongst physicians. This article reviews our current understanding of developmental venous anomalies. RESULTS: In the majority of cases, DVAs follow a benign clinical course. On rare occasions, DVAs become symptomatic generally due to an und

Low-flow vascular malformations without arteriovenous shunting of the central nervous system: a pictorial review.

This review aims to provide a comprehensive pictorial review of low-flow vascular malformations (LFVMs) of the central nervous system (CNS) without arteriovenous shunting, focusing on their epidemiology, pathophysiology, imaging features, and associations with other vascular anomalies. LFVMs - developmental venous anomalies (DVAs), cavernous malformations (CMs), brain capillary telangiectasias (BCTs), and sinus pericranii (SP) - are typically benign and incidental but may cause symptoms or hemorrhage. Differentiating LFVMs from neoplastic, inflammatory, or high-flow vascular lesions is critica

Imaging of pediatric skull lytic lesions: A review.

Skull lesions in pediatric population are common findings on imaging and sometimes with heterogeneous manifestations, constituting a diagnostic challenge. Some lesions can be misinterpreted for their aggressiveness, as with larger lesions eroding cortical bone, containing soft tissue components, leading to excessive and, in some cases, invasive inappropriate etiological investigation. In this review, we present multiple several conditions that may present as skull lesions or pseudolesions, organized by groups (anatomic variants, congenital and development disorders, traumatic injuries, vascula

Orbital Hemangioma in Bean Syndrome: The Lure of the Red Herring.

BACKGROUND: Bean syndrome (BS) is a rare congenital low-flow angiomatosis affecting multiple organ systems. About 200 cases with heterogeneous clinical presentation have been reported worldwide. The exact etiopathology is still not known. Most reported cases have occurred sporadically, although autosomal dominant inheritance has been suggested. BS predominantly presents with characteristic multifocal mucocutaneous lesions and often leads to refractory anemia caused by occult blood loss from the alimentary tract. Apart from the mucocutaneous and gastrointestinal tract involvement, this syndrome

Intracranial vascular anomalies in patients with periorbital lymphatic and lymphaticovenous malformations.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the nature, incidence, and radiologic appearance of intracranial vascular anomalies that occur in association with periorbital lymphatic malformation (LM) and lymphaticovenous malformation (LVM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical records and imaging studies of 33 patients ranging in age from the neonatal period to 39 years (mean age, 5.1 years; median age, 1.0 year) who were evaluated for orbital LM or LVM at our institution between 1953 and 2002. Imaging studies, including CT, MR imaging, and cerebra
