The prognostic value of histopathology on lingual nerve neurosensory recovery after micro-neurosurgery.

OBJECTIVE: Micro-neurosurgical repair is considered in permanent nerve damage but the outcome is unpredictable. We examined if histopathologic parameters of traumatic neuromas have a prognostic value for recovery in relation to lingual nerve micro-neurosurgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case study on neurosensory recovery after micro-neurosurgery. Outcome variables were as follows: pain perception, two-point discrimination, and sum score of perception, before and 12 months after micro-neurosurgery. Predictive histopathology variables included size, nerve tissue, and inflammation. S

Reduced influence of perceptual context in mild traumatic brain injury is not an illusion.

Perceptual grouping is impaired following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This may affect visual size perception, a process influenced by perceptual grouping abilities. We conducted two experiments to evaluate visual size perception in people with self-reported history of mTBI, using two different size-contrast illusions: the Ebbinghaus Illusion (Experiment 1) and the Müller-Lyer illusion (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, individuals with mTBI and healthy controls were asked to compare the size of two target circles that were either the same size or different sizes. The target circles appea

Ames's window in proprioception.

When holding a small-scale model of Ames's trapezoidal window with the arms fully extended, several observers experience a striking proprioceptive distortion (eg one hand appears farther from the other, or one arm appears longer than the other). However, data from a matching experiment suggest that the proprioceptive misalignment of the hands is, in fact, rather less than the apparent slant of the window when this is not held. This finding argues against a 'visual-capture' account, supports an explanation in terms of bimodal integrative processes, and underscores the importance of supplementin

Development of size constancy in children: A review and meta-analysis of size-matching studies.

Research on children's size estimation across varying distances began in the 1920s and has continued to the present. The most prominent method is the size-matching task, in which the participants are asked, for example, to select from several nearby comparison objects the one that corresponds in size to a distant standard object. In this overview, data on the development of size constancy from 24 studies, which provided 245 mean values for size constancy, were analyzed descriptively. Moreover, 102 out of the 245 means were also statistically analyzed. Overall, children of all ages underestimat

Pupillary contagion: central mechanisms engaged in sadness processing.

Empathic responses underlie our ability to share emotions and sensations with others. We investigated whether observed pupil size modulates our perception of other's emotional expressions and examined the central mechanisms modulated by incidental perception of pupil size in emotional facial expressions. We show that diminishing pupil size enhances ratings of emotional intensity and valence for sad, but not happy, angry or neutral facial expressions. This effect was associated with modulation of neural activity within cortical and subcortical regions implicated in social cognition. In an ident

Body image in eating disorders and analysis of its relevance: a preliminary study.

The purpose of the present study was to assess body perception in eating disorders and its meaning in therapy. A total of 44 patients, 25 bulimia nervosa and 19 anorexia nervosa, admitted at a specialized in-patient treatment center participated in the present study. Body size estimation procedures (video-distortion and image-marking techniques) and self-report questionnaires were used for the assessment. No significant differences were found in actual body size estimation between the two eating disorder groups, either before or after therapy. It emerged after therapy that the outcome was not

Spontaneous perceptual reversals are accompanied by systematic changes in pupil size but not respiration phase.

Humans tend to align their respiration with important events, in line with the notion that respiration serves as a tool to allocate (neuro-)physiological resources. This respiration alignment is consistently reported in laboratory studies relying on sequences of temporally structured, stimulus-driven experimental trials. Whether this alignment also occurs in the absence of external cues - such as during spontaneous changes of perception - remains unknown. Notably, pupil size is known to change around spontaneous changes in perception, and pupil size covaries with respiration phase, suggesting

Distinct Contributions of Genes and Environment to Visual Size Illusion and the Underlying Neural Mechanism.

As exemplified by the Ebbinghaus illusion, the perceived size of an object can be significantly biased by its surrounding context. The phenomenon is experienced by humans as well as other species, hence likely evolutionarily adaptive. Here, we examined the heritability of the Ebbinghaus illusion using a combination of the classic twin method and multichannel functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Results show that genes account for over 50% of the variance in the strength of the experienced illusion. Interestingly, activations evoked by the Ebbinghaus stimuli in the early visual cortex are exp

No dissociation between perception and action in patient DF when haptic feedback is withdrawn.

Goodale et al. (1991) reported a striking dissociation between vision for perception and action. They examined DF, a human patient who had damage to her ventral visual stream and suffered from visual form agnosia. She was unable to perceive an object's size but could match the opening of her hand to the object's size during grasping. It was concluded that grasping relied on a separate representation of visual size in the dorsal stream and required no visual input from the ventral stream. This observation inspired the influential perception-action model, which claimed separate visual streams fo

Visually perceived eye level and perceived elevation of objects: linearly additive influences from visual field pitch and from gravity.

Observing a pitched visual field (i.e. tilted around a horizontal axis in the observer's frontal plane) results in large changes in the elevation visually perceived to correspond to eye level (VPEL) and in the perceived elevation and size of stationary objects viewed against the field. With topforward pitch (top toward observer) VPEL lies above true eye level and objects appear smaller and lower; with topbackward pitch VPEL lies below true eye level and objects appear larger and higher. Oscillation of the pitched field induces synchronous perceived oscillation of elevation of a stationary targ

Vertical asymmetry in central color evaluation: How spatial position and scene structure modulate the perceived size of colored regions.

Humans exhibit vertical asymmetry in color perception, with the lower visual field generally showing superior performance. We investigated whether this asymmetry extends to central vision by having participants judge the relative size of colored and grayscale regions within small, centrally presented stimuli (1.5° × 2.0°). Natural-scene images were partially desaturated so that either the upper or lower portion remained in color, and participants reported which region (colored or grayscale) appeared to be larger. To examine the role of scene structure, we also used pixel-shuffled versions of t

Human ocular vergence movements induced by changing size and disparity.

Human subjects viewed an electronically generated bright square. Horizontal movements of the two eyes were recorded with the scleral coil method. The dynamic properties of vergence movements induced by movement of the bright square were investigated for the following three kinds of stimulus motion: (a) both the size and the binocular disparity of the square changed together, in such a way as to exactly mimic the retinal image changes produced by a real object's motion in depth; (b) the changing-size component in (a) was present with no disparity component; (c) the changing-disparity component

Visual fields for frontal plane motion and for changing size.

Thresholds were measured in 15 subjects for 2-Hz oscillations of size and for 2-Hz oscillatory motion in the frontal plane using test squares of side lengths 0.5 degrees, 1.0 degrees and 2.0 degrees. Size-oscillation thresholds were lowest (i.e. sensitivity was greatest) for the 2.0 degrees square while thresholds were highest (i.e. sensitivity was least) for the 0.5 degrees square in 28 of 34 tests. Frontal plane motion thresholds, on the other hand, did not generally depend on square size. Equal-threshold contours in the visual field were roughly elliptical in 10 of 13 subjects for both type

Children with spina bifida perceive visual illusions but not multistable figures.

We compared 32 children with spina bifida and 32 age-matched controls on two classes of illusory perception, one involving visual illusions and the other, multistable figures. Children with spina bifida were as adept as age peers in the perception of visual illusions concerned with size, length, and area, but were impaired in the perception of multistable figures that involved figure-ground reversals, illusory contours, perspective reversing, and paradoxical figures. That children with spina bifida reliably perceive illusions that rely on inappropriate constancy scaling of size, length, and ar

Evidence for good recovery of lengths of real objects seen with natural stereo viewing.

Six experiments are described in which good performance of the task of matching the lengths of two stationary real objects, gnarled wooden sticks, under a variety of binocular viewing conditions, including variations in viewing distances was demonstrated. Relatively poor matching performance was observed when the sticks were viewed monocularly in oscillatory motion, or monocularly and stationary. The results suggest that stereo can support good representations of metric scene structure when length judgments of natural objects are required under (quasi-)natural viewing. The implications of thes

Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder: predictive value of radiologic studies and electrophysiologic tests on cochlear implant outcomes and its radiologic classification.

CONCLUSION: The width of the bony cochlear nerve canal (BCNC) and the size of the cochlear nerve are reliable predictors of long-term speech perception abilities for children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) after cochlear implantation (CI). In addition, electrical stapedial reflex (ESR) and electrical compound action potential (ECAP) also have considerable value in predicting postoperative speech perception abilities in these children. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether speech perception abilities after CI in children with ANSD can be predicted from the results of radiologic stud

Ebbinghaus figures that deceive the eye do not necessarily deceive the hand.

In support of the visual stream dissociation hypothesis, which states that distinct visual streams serve vision-for-perception and vision-for-action, visual size illusions were reported over 20 years ago to 'deceive the eye but not the hand'. Ever since, inconclusive results and contradictory interpretations have accumulated. Therefore, we investigated the effects of the Ebbinghaus figure on repetitive aiming movements with distinct dynamics. Participants performed a Fitts' task in which Ebbinghaus figures served as targets. We systematically varied the three parameters which have been shown t

Infants' use of motion cues in object individuation processes.

We investigated 10-month-old infants' and adults' numerical expectations in scenarios where information on self-motion and static object features may give rise to numerically incongruent representations. A red circle or a blue box with yellow stripes appeared on the left side of a screen, moved autonomously sideways and then moved back behind the screen. Next, on the opposite side, an identical object was first brought in view by a hand and then pushed back behind the screen (Experiments 1 and 2). The screen was finally removed, revealing either one or two objects. Infants looked longer at one

Apparent-length expansion in whole contours and isolated parts: evidence for configuration-dependent processing.

The visual system overestimates the length of structured contours relative to adjacent empty intervals of the same physical size. This study examined whether apparent-length expansion occurs across isolated contour parts as well as complete objects, and whether the expansion of the whole can be predicted from that of its components. Observers matched the perceived horizontal extent of complete pentagons, incomplete pentagons with one or two missing segments, isolated apices, pedestals, parallel line pairs, and rectangles using an adjustment method. All stimulus types produced consistent positi
