Recognised for their diversity in apical structure morphology, members of the cestode order Lecanicephalidea Wardle et McLeod, 1952 known to date exhibit relatively mundane and uniform acetabular morphology. A new lecanicephalidean genus, Zanobatocestus gen. n., is proposed for two new species found parasitising the spiral intestine of the striped panray, Zanobatus schoenleinii (Müller et Henle), off Senegal that are highly unusual in acetabular morphology. Unlike the members of the 21 recognised lecanicephalidean genera, which possess simple, uniloculate suckers or bothridia, Zanobatocestus m

The cestode fauna of the shortfin devilray, Mobula kuhlii (Müller & Henle, 1841) was examined for the first time. The work resulted in the discovery of a new genus and species of rhinebothriidean tapeworm. Crassuseptum pietrafacei, n. gen. n. sp. is erected here on the basis of its unique scolex and proglottid morphology. Histological sections and examination by light and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that this new genus differs from all other rhinebothriidean genera in its possession of bothridia in which the proximal and distal sides are confluent, i.e., not separated by a rim of

This paper describes electron microscopic observations of dense-cored vesicle-containing axons, cell bodies, and endings of the terminal nerve in several elasmobranchs. The vesicles are found in two apparent cell types, one with a polymorphic nucleus and another with an oval nucleus. The types may correspond to cells producing one each of two neuropeptides (LHRH and FMRF-amide) that have previously been localized in the nerve. Dense-cored vesicles are found in many unmyelinated fibers in both the terminal nerve proper and its major ganglia. Some of these form complicated structures with interd

Mobulidae are large filter-feeding cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) that migrate in the world's oceans. However, how their skeletal tissues have adapted to varying environments remains poorly understood. In this study, skeletal adaptations were investigated in four devil rays (Mobulidae), inhabiting various depth ranges from the surface (Mobula eregoodoo 0-50 m, Mobula thurstoni 0-100 m) to deeper water (Mobula mobular 0-1112 m, Mobula tarapacana 0-1896 m). However, since these are highly protected species, often with offshore, pelagic lifestyles, samples are difficult to obtain and are o

Regionalization of the vertebral column occurred early during vertebrate evolution and has been extensively investigated in mammals. However, less data are available on vertebral regions of crown gnathostomes. This is particularly true for batoids (skates, sawfishes, guitarfishes, and rays) whose vertebral column has long been considered to be composed of the same two regions as in teleost fishes despite the presence of a synarcual. However, the numerous vertebral units in chondrichthyans may display a more complex regionalization pattern than previously assumed and the intraspecific variation

Tissues from the male genital ducts of six specimens of the clearnose skate Raja eglanteria, comprising the Leydig gland, upper and lower epididymis, ductus deferens and seminal vesicle, were fixed and embedded for ultrastructural examination. In the Leydig gland, two types of columnar cells were identified, one bearing microvilli, a basal nucleus and evidence of active secretion with plentiful endoplasmic reticulum and numerous secretory droplets, and the other pyriform with cilia, and swathes of cytofilaments emanating from prominent desmosomes. Occasional crystalloid intramitochondrial incl

We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who suffered an envenomation from a greater weever during a seaside vacation along the Aegean coast in Izmir, Türkiye. Following the incident, she experienced intense pain and sought treatment at an emergency department, where she received analgesics and cold compresses. Unfortunately, this approach failed to alleviate her pain, which persisted for approximately 24 hours. On the twelfth day, with symptoms worsening and the emergence of a larger wound than the one sustained on the day of the incident, she visited the University Hospital for further care

Parasite diversity above the Arctic circle remains understudied even for commercially valuable host taxa. Thorny skate, Amblyraja radiata, is a common bycatch species with a growing commercial value. Its natural range covers both sides of the North Atlantic including the Arctic zone. Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago located on the northwest corner of the Barents Shelf which sustains a spectacular species diversity. So far, several monogenean species have been reported infecting thorny skate across the Atlantic Ocean. In the present study, we intend to fill in the knowledge gap on monogenean

Gymnurahemecus bulbosus gen. et sp. nov. infects the heart of smooth butterfly rays, Gymnura micrura in the Gulf of Mexico. Gymnurahemecus differs from all other accepted aporocotylid genera by having one column of C-shaped lateral tegumental spines, a medial oesophageal bulb anterior to a diverticulate region of the oesophagus, inverse U-shaped intestinal caeca, a non-looped testis, an oviducal ampulla, a Laurer's canal, and a post-caecal common genital pore. Acanthocotyle urolophi sp. nov. is described from the skin of the banded stingaree, Urolophus cruciatus (Lacépède, 1804). This is the first acanthocotylid to be described from Australian waters. Acanthocotyle urolophi sp. nov. is distinguished from other species of Acanthocotyle by a combination of the number of vitelline follicles 38 (33-46) and the number of rows 35 (32-37) of sclerites on the pseudohaptor. In addition, Acanthocotyle urolophi sp. nov. has no germarial appendix and no uterine "arm". A uterine receptaculum seminis was not identified in whole mounts. There is no penis papilla a

Two new species of diphyllidean cestodes of the genus Echinobothrium, each hosted by a different skate species in the Raja miraletus complex, are described. Echinobothrium mercedesae n. sp. is described from R. cf. miraletus 2 off Senegal. Echinobothrium yiae n. sp. is described from R. cf. miraletus 1 off South Africa. Both species are small worms that differ from their 29 described congeners in the combination of number of cephalic peduncle spines per column, hook formula, number and arrangement of testes, and arrangement of vitelline follicles. They are easily distinguished from one another

We describe lesions associated with a seemingly intense infection of trypanorhynch plerocerci (Platyhelminthes: Cestoda: Trypanorhyncha) in the gastric wall of a female cownose ray, Rhinoptera bonasus (Myliobatiformes: Rhinopteridae) captured in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Grossly, the multitude of encapsulated, encysted plerocerci imparted a bumpy and cobbled appearance to the serosa of the stomach, and none was observed in any other tissue during routine parasitological necropsy. Histologically, the plerocerci were associated with severe intramural granulomatous gastritis, vascular ectasia

The objective of this study was to determine the current levels of total mercury and methylmercury in the muscle tissues of different fish species caught in the Mediterranean Sea to ascertain whether these concentrations exceed the maximum level stipulated by the European Commission Decision. Total mercury concentrations in the muscles of skates ranged from 0.18 to 1.85 mg/kg (wet weight) (average, 1.00 mg/kg) while levels of 0.11 to 1.92 mg/kg (wet weight) (average, 0.70 mg/kg) and 0.21 to 1.74 mg/kg (wet weight) (average, 0.70 mg/kg) were recorded for blue whiting and red mullet, respectivel

Reports of teratogenic embryos in elasmobranchs have been documented in multiple species, with proposed aetiologies including environmental disturbances, genetic mutations, predation, exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds and maternal stress. Nevertheless, complex congenital malformations such as bicephaly remain exceptionally rare, particularly among freshwater stingrays of the family Potamotrygonidae. The present study constitutes the first record of bicephaly in the genus Potamotrygon, documenting multiple congenital anomalies in two embryos from a single litter. One female embryo exhi

The ability to visualise the internal anatomical structures of fish provides important information on their reproductive status and body condition and has made important contributions to many areas of fish biology. Obtaining information on the internal anatomy of fish has traditionally required euthanasia and dissection. Although ultrasonography is now increasingly used to study internal fish anatomy without the need for euthanasia, traditional techniques still require restraint and contact with the animal, both of which are known to cause stress. This has prompted the development of waterproo

The relationship between cartilage growth - mineralization patterns were studied in adult Rajidae with X-ray morphology/morphometry, undecalcified resin-embedded, heat-deproteinated histology and scanning electron microscopy. Morphometry of the wing-fins, nine central rays of the youngest and oldest specimens documented a significant decrement of radials mean length between inner, middle and outer zones, but without a regular progression along the ray. This suggests that single radial length growth is regulated in such a way to align inter-radial joints parallel to the wing metapterygia curvat

INTRODUCTION: Although many batoid species, known as final hosts of lecanicephalidean cestodes, exist in the Persian Gulf, no knowledge regarding this cestode order is available for this region. This study is the first one focusing on this order in the Persian Gulf.
METHODS: A total of 11 cowtail stingrays, Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål), were collected from the north eastern Persian Gulf. Isolated cestodes were fixed in 10% seawater-buffered formalin and stored in 70% ethanol. For morphological examinations, worms were stained using acetic carmine; a subset was prepared for SEM.
RESULTS: A n

The optic tectum of the ocellated dragonet (Synchiropus ocellatus) was studied with immunohistochemistry. Antibodies raised against the calcium binding protein calretinin (CR) revealed a lamination similar to that already reported for other ray finned fish. Most immunoreactive fibers could be observed in those layers receiving retinal afferents and most immunoreactive cells occur in the stratum periventriculare. However, there are marked differences in the presence of other calretinin-positive cell types and immunoreactive lamina between the dorsomedial and ventrolateral parts of the tectum. S

We describe a new genus, Histodytes, within the family Guyanemidae (Nematoda: Spirurida: Camallanina: Dracunculoidea). The type species, Histodytes microocellatus n. sp., is found in the gill, heart, kidney, spleen and gonad tissues of Raja microocellata from the continental shelf off the estuary of Muros y Noia (north-western Iberian Peninsula). Histodytes differs morphologically from the three other genera described to date in this family ( Guyanema, Travassosnema, Pseudodelphys) because the vulva is situated a long way back from the oesophageal-intestinal union, and the anterior uterine bra

Elasmobranchs, including sharks and rays, are commonly housed in public aquariums due to their ecological significance and educational value. The common guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos), currently listed as 'Critically Endangered' by the IUCN, is particularly susceptible to population declines due to overfishing and bycatch. While generally considered robust, individuals in captivity may experience stress-related health issues, increasing their susceptibility to infectious diseases. This study investigates a mortality event affecting three 20-year-old guitarfish kept in a public aquarium. Th
