Motion characteristics of human roller skating.

In order to achieve a high speed of skating robot based on the leg structure - with passive wheels on even ground - the motion characteristics of human roller skating are studied in this paper. Utilizing a three dimensional motion capture system, the linear and turning gait are analyzed to express the motion characteristics of human roller skating. According to the observation and analysis, the normal linear gait can be divided into four phases and normal turning can be divided into three phases. The spin angle between the sagittal plane and the roller skate of the supporting leg is mainly gen

Sideline Coverage of Figure Skating Events.

The sport of figure skating has evolved to include various disciplines and athletes continue to push the limits of the skills they perform, thus increasing the potential for injury in practice, as well as in competition. To provide optimal rink side coverage, health care professionals must be aware of the elements skaters perform and the injuries to be expected. Appropriate planning and coordination of medical services is required to ensure adequate and timely care of injured figure skaters. Protocols developed for local, national, and international events are available to assist in this proce

Historical Improvement in Speed Skating Economy.

UNLABELLED: Half the improvement in 1500-m speed-skating world records can be explained by technological innovations and the other half by athletic improvement. It is hypothesized that improved skating economy is accountable for much of the athletic improvement. PURPOSE: To determine skating economy in contemporary athletes and to evaluate the change in economy over the years. METHODS: Contemporary skaters of the Dutch national junior team (n = 8) skated 3 bouts of 6 laps at submaximal velocity, from which skating economy was calculated (in mL O2 ・ kg-1 ・ km-1). A literature search provided

GnRH receptors and peptides: skating backward.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and its receptor are essential for reproduction in vertebrates. Although there are three major types of GnRH peptides and two major types of receptors in vertebrates, the pattern of distribution is unusual. Evidence is presented from genome mining that type I GnRHRs are not restricted to mammals, but can be found in the lobe-finned and cartilaginous fishes. This implies that this tail-less GnRH receptor emerged early in vertebrate evolution, followed by several independent losses in different lineages. Also, we have identified representatives from the thre

Nonparticipant injuries associated with skating activities.

OBJECTIVE: Children are at risk for injury even if they are not active recreational participants. This study describes the epidemiology of pediatric nonparticipant skating-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments in the United States from 1993 to 2003. METHODS: Narratives of injuries identified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System consumer product codes as ice-skating, roller-skating, and in-line skating-related were reviewed. RESULTS: Fifty-eight children were treated for nonparticipant skating-related injuries in Na

Injuries in short track speed skating.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the pattern of injury in short track speed skating. PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence and characteristics of injuries in short track speed skating. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Ninety-five of 150 elite-level skaters (63.3%) were surveyed to collect information on training and competition load as well as on injuries sustained during the 1999-2000 competitive season. Injuries were characterized in terms of anatomic location, type of injury, time loss from training and competition, and circumstance of injury (acute onset during competition,

Objective measurement of figure skating performance.

Figure skating uses the median rank aggregation system for determining medal winners. Unfortunately, the system can be influenced by idiosyncratic ratings made by some judges unlike the skating ability measures from a many-facet Rasch analysis. These measures are constructed to be independent, as statistically possible, of item difficulties, judge severities, and the rating scale structure. A many-facet Rasch analysis was conducted on data from the controversial ladies event at the 1994 Olympics. The results illustrate how the idiosyncratic ratings of the judges were not accounted for by the m

Hemoglobin/myoglobin desaturation during speed skating.

The characteristic low "sitting" position of competitive speed skating has been shown to result in a right shifted heart rate-VO2 curve and elevated submaximal blood lactate values compared with running or cycling. This is thought to be a consequence of reduced blood flow and subsequent oxygen delivery to the exercising muscle while speed skating. Duel wavelength spectrophotometry was used to measure oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin/myoglobin (OD) in the capillary bed of five muscle groups during in-line skating in upright (US) and low (LS) positions. Eight U.S. speed skaters (4 category

[Inline skating--typical injuries and prevention].

In a field study we evaluated 500 inline skaters and documented the risk for injury as well as active and passive prophylactic methods. Inline-skating carries high risk for injuries. A total of 41% of the 500 examined subjects got injured. 73% of the injuries attacked soft tissue, 22% of the subjects suffered in distorsions and 5% fractures. 24% of the 222 injured people required specific therapy. Most of the injuries occur at the upper extremities. The fingers, wrist or elbow were involved in 78% of the fractures and 58% of the distorsions. Only every second skater has skating skills that all

Wheels-in-line roller skating injuries.

Injuries sustained by patients using wheels-in-line roller skates were reviewed in a survey of 57 cases collected by the Roosevelt Hospital Hand Service and 444 cases compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Most patients were novice skaters in the second and third decades of life. Severe distal radius fractures and upper extremity soft-tissue trauma were the most common injuries in both groups. The distal radius (44.9%), scaphoid (13.9%), and radial head (10.4%) were the three most common fracture sites in the Roosevelt survey. Most (80%) skaters in this group did not wear protecti

Bicycle ergometry and speed skating performance.

A comparison between maximal power output during cycling and skating was made, and correlates of skating performance with bicycle performance and skating technique were investigated. Twenty-five well-trained speed skaters performed two bicycle tests and a 500-m and 1500-m ice skating race. The power (P) during skating is calculated from ice and air friction losses: at 500 m P500 = 344 +/- 60 W and at 1500 m P1500 = 283 +/- 65 W. Stroke frequency and pre-extension knee angle as principle determining factors of P were determined. The two bicycle tests (of 30" and 2'30" duration, maximal performa

The 1982 epidemic--roller skating injuries.

A series of 100 roller skating injuries is presented. Roller skating injuries have been occurring at a higher rate than the previously reported skateboarding epidemic of 1977. The severity of injury has been lower, 32% fractures and dislocations occurring whilst roller skating, compared to 60% whilst skateboarding. In particular a striking reduction is seen in ankle fractures. Fifty questionnaires detailing method of injury were analysed.

Conditioning program for competitive figure skating.

To test the feasibility that traditional interval training methods could be adapted to the needs of competitive figure skaters, an interval skating program was conducted during a 3-month period for a group of skaters at diverse levels of proficiency. The program required only a small portion of the total ice time utilized by the skaters on a daily basis, i.e., 1/2 hr, three times a week. On alternate days, the skaters used the same amount of time in a strength training program. A flexibility-stretching facet was to be done by the skaters on a daily basis. Progress was evaluated by treadmill ox

Fatigue in ice skating: biomechanical considerations.

This paper attempts to describe how the mechanical patterns in ice skating are affected by muscular fatigue. It reviews several investigations dealing with the effects of muscular fatigue on standing broad jump performance and running. It concludes that fatigue studies dealing with ice skating can be expected to show that the mechanical patterns in ice skating deteriorate as a result of muscular fatigue.

Neuromuscular fatigue after a ski skating marathon.

The aim of this study was to characterize neuromuscular fatigue in knee extensor muscles after a marathon skiing race (mean +/- SD duration = 159.7 +/- 17.9 min). During the 2 days preceding the event and immediately after, maximal percutaneous electrical stimulations (single twitch, 0.5-s tetanus at 20 and 80 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve of 11 trained skiers. Superimposed twitches were also delivered during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) to determine maximal voluntary activation (% VA). EMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. MVC decreased with fatigue from 171.7 +/-
