An athlete's skin has to cope with various stressors that influence skin integrity. This study investigated the effect of intense sporting activity at a competitive level on skin health, independent of the type of sport. The prevalence of dermatoses in elite athletes who exercise 8 or more hours per week was compared to recreational athletes. By applying a questionnaire, we acquired data from n=492 recruited athletes and recreational athletes regarding the prevalence of dermatoses, the extent of physical activity, and sports discipline practiced. Compared to the reference group, elite athletes

The skin is the largest organ of the body, at the boundary with the outside environment. Primarily, it provides a physical and chemical barrier against external insults, but it can act also as immune organ because it contains a whole host of immune-competent cells of both the innate and the adaptive immune systems, which cooperate in eliminating invading pathogens following tissue injury. On the other hand, improper skin immune responses lead to autoimmune skin diseases (AISD), such as pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid, vitiligo, and alopecia. Although the interplay among genetic, epigenetic, and

BACKGROUND: Waste is a composite mixture of different substances including endotoxins, organic dust and bio-aerosol stuffed with micro-organisms, and various toxic organic and inorganic chemicals, which may be intrinsically hazardous to human health. Therefore, health risks may derive from direct or indirect contact with garbage.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched for English-language literature describing the relationships between garbage and skin diseases in order to provide a state-of-the-art review on what is currently known about waste exposure effects on skin health.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS:

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to review the main lesion types of the nasal skin and appropriate treatment strategies rather than to present a comprehensive list of all diseases that affect the skin that can involve the nose.
METHODS: We reviewed the main nasal skin lesion types and available treatment strategies. Nasal skin lesions were classified as benign, premalignant, or malignant.
RESULTS: Benign lesions of the nose include nonmalignant tumoral lesions (i.e., freckles, comedo, adenoma sebaceum [Pringle disease], hydrocystoma, fibrous papules, sebaceous hyperplasia, and rhinophy

In medical practice, almost every clinician may encounter patients with skin disease. However, it is not always easy for physicians of all specialties to face the daily task of determining the nature and clinical implication of dermatologic manifestations. Are they confined to the skin, representing a pure dermatologic event? Or are they also markers of internal conditions relating to the patient's overall health? In this review, we will discuss the principal cutaneous conditions which have been linked to metabolic alterations. Particularly, since insulin has an important role in homeostasis a

Although Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection, such as pityriasis versicolor (PV) and Malassezia folliculitis. Moreover the yeasts of the genus Malassezia have been associated with seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and, less commonly, with confluent and reticulated papillomatosis, onychomycosis, and transient acantholytic dermatosis. The study of the clinical role of Malassezia species has been surrounded by controversy due to the relative difficulty in isolation, cultivation, a

As mental and psychological issues are important in the development of many dermatologic diseases, these factors are of special interest in research. Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of interaction between psychological processes and the nervous and immune systems of the human body, and it was comprehensively described for the first time about 30 years ago. Communication between the mind and the skin involves the psycho-immuno-endocrine-cutaneous system, encompassing the activities of the brain, the immune system and the skin, with participation of different neuropeptides, interleukins, and

Occupational skin diseases (mainly irritative and allergic contact dermatitis) are a significant part of occupational diseases. The economical burden of occupational skin diseases (OSD) is huge comprising direct costs (treatment, compensation) as well as indirect costs due to sick leave and lack of productivity. The management of a case of OSD is complex requiring different steps ranging from diagnosis to prevention, through interpretation of patch tests and outpatient treatment and involving an interdisciplinary approach. Patch tests alone cannot prove the allergic origin of OSD because posit

Skin disease is the most common occupational disease, but the reported number is small in Korea due to a difficulty of detection and diagnosis in time. We described various official statistics and data from occupational skin disease surveillance system, epidemiological surveys and cases published in scientific journals. Until 1981, 2,222 cases of occupational skin disease were reported by Korean employee's regular medical check-up, accounting for 4.9% of the total occupational diseases. There was no subsequent official statistics to figure out occupational skin diseases till 1998. From 1999, t

Autoimmune and nonautoimmune bullous diseases can both be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of these diseases has increased tremendously, there is still much to learn about the various factors affecting their onset, course, and therapy. In recent years, increasing information has been published about the effect of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients on bullous skin diseases. Some factors are believed to be inducers (thiol and phenol-containing foods in pemphigus), whereas others are believed to be protective (antiox

Several skin manifestations were described in patients affected by intestinal disorders. The development of skin diseases in these patients could be related to the impairment of intestinal absorption and motility, other than to immunological and hormonal changes. The growing evidence of the association between skin disorders and intestinal diseases suggests that the skin could be considered the 'mirror of the gut'.

BACKGROUND: In cases of thyroid diseases, many of the symptoms arise on the skin. In this study, we aimed to detect and compare the skin findings and accompanying dermatoses of patients with thyroid diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 220 patients with thyroid diseases, who did not have any medical cure, and 90 healthy individuals as a control group attended our study. All of the cases were examined, and the skin findings and/or dermatoses were recorded. The skin findings in the patients and the control group were compared statistically.
RESULTS: Among 220 cases, in 125 (56.8%) skin findings we

Dermatology and rheumatology have in common that many rheumatologic diseases manifest with distinct clinical presentations on the skin. Since the skin is easily accessible both to physical examination and biopsy, rheumatologists appreciate to consult with dermatologists with experience in the clinical and pathological aspects of the rheumatic diseases with skin manifestations. Though the medical subspecialities show a tendency to an organ-particular focus, dermatologists traditionally have a multidisciplinary approach to patients and tend to communicate in a cross-disciplinary way. The groupin

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an immunosuppressive drug the efficiency of which has been established in renal transplantation. Recent studies suggest that it may also be effective in the treatment of variant skin diseases especially if the skin lesions are triggered by lymphocytes. Studies have shown efficacy in autoimmune bullous dermatoses, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. However, there are no placebo-controlled trials that support the use of MMF as first line therapy in these skin diseases.

Human skin is continuously exposed to internal and external influences that may alter its condition and functioning. As a consequence, the skin may undergo alterations leading to immune dysfunction, imbalanced epidermal homeostasis, or other skin disorders. New theories are developing that link food intake and health. The objective of this review is to evaluate current knowledge about the interrelation of food and skin, particularly the effect of nutrients on some cutaneous immune disorders and therapeutic actions of nutrients in skin disorders.

Studies of hereditary blistering skin diseases (epidermolysis bullosa) and targeted gene mutation experiments in knockout mice have greatly improved our understanding of hemidesmosomes and their associated structures in the cytoskeleton and basement membrane of the skin and mucous membranes. At least 10 molecules are recruited in hemidesmosome complexes, where they interact in a complex way. Hemidesmosomes are not simple adhesion devices, but also transduce signals for cell spreading, cell proliferation and basement membrane organisation. The dynamics of a hemidesmosome raises the metaphor of

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases have only recently been considered as a possible public health problem in developing countries. Data supporting this matter are scarce. The aim of this study is to report the experience of a specialized dermatologic center in Bamako (Mali) in order to complete two previous studies conducted in the Bamako area: a prevalence study in the general population and a study in nonspecialized health centers of Bamako. It is our intention to provide a comprehensive picture of the problem of skin diseases in an African developing country.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected a
