The considerable variety of diseases involving both the skin and the peripheral or central nervous system is due to the developmental relationship between skin and nervous system. Diseases of the nervous system resulting in skin changes comprise disorders of nails, hair, sweat and sebaceous glands as well as neuropathic ulcers in various manifestations. Neurocutaneous syndromes (phacomatoses) are nevoid systemic diseases comprising neurofibromatoses, tuberose sclerosis, ataxia telangiectasia, nevoid angiomatoses and other neurocutaneous disorders. Polytopic disorders of the skin and nervous sy

Refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons face significant barriers to healthcare access, particularly dermatologic services. Infectious skin diseases are especially prevalent in these populations due to multiple intersecting risk factors. This systematic review aimed to identify common infectious dermatologic conditions among these populations, their associated risk factors, and implications for clinical and public health management. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases through September 2024, adhering to the Preferred Reporting

The Charta of paediatric infectious diseases, which was printed in Athens, Greece in 1912, contains instructions for school students on the prevention of paediatric infectious diseases occurring in Greece at the beginning of the 20th century. It consists of four sections: i) The official circular of the Department of the School of Hygiene of the Hellenic Ministry of Education on the protection of school students from acute infectious diseases signed by the minister on January 31, 1912; ii) an introductory section on the definition of infectious diseases, the modes of their transmission and the

BACKGROUND: Immigrant Latino workers represent an expanding workforce in rural areas of the USA, where their employment is concentrated in occupations such as poultry processing that entail chemical, infectious, and mechanical skin exposures. Occupation-related skin illnesses in this vulnerable population are not well characterized.
OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to describe the prevalences of skin diseases among immigrant Latino poultry processors and other manual workers in North Carolina.
METHODS: Community-based sampling was used to recruit 742 immigrant Latino workers, 518 of whom

Dysregulated skin immunity is a hallmark of many skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, autoimmune blistering diseases, and interface dermatitis. Current treatment options for the inflammatory skin diseases are limited and sometimes ineffective, therefore further understanding of pathomechanisms in the inflammatory skin conditions is necessary to develop new therapeutic alternatives. Recent studies suggest that the serine protease, granzyme B, is a key mediator in multiple inflammatory skin diseases, implying that strategies targeting granzyme B may be an attractive treatment option for such

Cutaneous granulomatoses represent a heterogeneous group of diseases, which are defined by macrophage infiltration in the skin. Skin granuloma can be formed in the context of infectious and non-infectious conditions. Recent technological advances have deepened our understanding of the pathophysiology of granulomatous skin inflammation, and they provide novel insights into human tissue macrophage biology at the site of ongoing disease. Here, we discuss findings on macrophage immune function and metabolism derived from three prototypic cutaneous granulomatoses: granuloma annulare, sarcoidosis, a

BACKGROUND: Person-to-person transmitted infectious diseases can cause occupational diseases (OD). These are subsumed as BK-No. 3101 in the German list of OD which applies for individuals with a considerably higher risk for infection as a consequence of their professional activity compared to the general population.
OBJECTIVES: The special medical and insurance law aspects of a work-related MRSA colonization are presented using the example of an expert opinion case and an evaluation of the BK reports of suspected occupational disease (BK No. 3101) of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV

Several infectious, neoplastic or inflammatory skin diseases, may be early manifestations of HIV infection. We reviewed the clinical data of 226 HIV seropositive male patients with cutaneous disease, from a total of 337 inpatients at the Infectious Diseases Unit--Department of Medicine 1--Curry Cabral Hospital, from 1985 to 1991. Some considerations are made about the most common dermatological disorders: oral candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis, Kaposi's sarcoma, herpes simplex infection, drug-related skin disorders, herpes zoster and dermatophytosis. The high prevalence of cutaneous manifesta

Directed and preventive therapies for cutaneous infectious disease and infestation continue to evolve, providing physicians with new options for care. Common infectious diseases (e.g., genital herpes, herpes zoster, and head lice) occur in the outpatient and inpatient setting. This review of the literature highlights new therapies, including those still in development, such as novel drugs and vaccines, all of which should help to decrease the frequency and severity of common infectious diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissues.

BACKGROUND: More than 90% of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients develop skin lesions at some time throughout the course of the disease. Several skin diseases have proved to be sensitive and useful indicators of progression of HIV infection. Although these conditions may be seen in general healthy population, their occurrence in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is often atypical, more severe and explosive.
AIMS: The present study was carried out to categorize the skin lesions by histopathology using punch biopsy or cytology when feasible in HIV infected patien

There are many infectious diseases in Guizhou Province during the Republican period, including cholera, smallpox, typhoid, typhus, dysentery, scarlet fever, diphtheria, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, recurrent fever, malaria, trachoma, acute conjunctivitis, skin diseases, venereal diseases, leprosy and so on. Natural and social factors together led to the prevalence of infectious diseases during that period. For example, natural factors mainly include Guizhou province's special geographical condition and its frequent flood disasters, and social factors such as the unhealthy lifestyle and l

Cutaneous granulomatosis is a heterogeneous group of diseases, characterized by a skin inflammatory reaction triggered by a wide variety of stimuli, including infections, foreign bodies, malignancy, metabolites, and chemicals. From a pathogenic point of view, they are divided into non-infectious and infectious granulomas. Pathophysiological mechanisms are still poorly understood. Non-infectious granulomatous skin diseases include granuloma annulare, necrobiosis lipoidica, rheumatic nodules, foreign body granulomas, cutaneous sarcoidosis, and interstitial granulomatous dermatitis. In French Guayana, climatic and geographic conditions enhance development of numerous fungal, parasitic and microbial skin diseases. The most particular infectious diseases of this French department are lobomycosis, chromomycosis (Phialophora pedrosoi), creeping disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, mycobacterial ulcus (Mycobacterium ulcerans) and papular dermatitis caused by nettling hairs of lepidoptera (Hylesia urticans). The occurence of these skin diseases is demonstrative of pathological ecology of the Amazonian country.

Diseases of the skin related to the use of swimming pools do not appear very often in medical reports. In this review of such diseases we designate changes in the skin and hair as being infectious, toxic or allergic in origin. Particular attention is given to allergenic additives in the water. There is no indication that public swimming pools in the Federal Republic of Germany present any danger to the skin.

Infectious diseases of the skin have become rarer in industrialized nations, but they still affect a considerable part of the population in tropical regions. Skin diseases induced by protozoa, worms and ectoparasites are among the 17 "neglected tropical diseases" defined by the WHO (leishmaniasis, dracunculiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis). Skin symptoms in travellers returning from the tropics may challenge dermatologists in Germany regarding differential diagnostic assessment and therapy. Among the 12 most frequent skin diseases in travellers are cutaneous larva migrans, leishmani

According to official statistics, infectious diseases only play a minor role in German children. To test this assumption, 1685/3405 charts of a private pediatrician were randomly chosen for further evaluation. 1112/1685 children had been seen in the office during the study period, 934 of them because of an infectious disease (83%). 700/934 charts were further reviewed in a standardized fashion. Pharyngo-tonsillitis was the most frequent diagnosis (18.6%), followed by (non-obstructive) bronchitis (18.5%), infectious diseases of the skin (10.2%) and Otitis media (9.9%). Cutaneous involvement with disseminated histoplasmosis occasionally occurs in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. We describe a profoundly immunocompromised patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who had concomitant psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and disseminated histoplasmosis, each with similar features. Findings of a skin biopsy specimen from a lesion on the forehead showed an infiltrate of histiocytes filled with Histoplasma capsulatum. In disseminated histoplasmosis involving the skin, lesions may have features more characteristic of a papulosquamous derma

INTRODUCTION: Non-neoplastic skin lesions constitute the majority of skin diseases. There is a paucity of histopathology studies of non-neoplastic skin diseases in Nigeria and the West Africa sub-region in general. This is because the dermato-pathology sub-specialty is poorly developed. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to determine the spectrum of histologically diagnosed non-neoplastic skin lesions in Ibadan, Nigeria.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study. All non-neoplastic skin lesions diagnosed in the Department of Pathology, University College Hospital, Ibadan over a five year p
