Dysbiosis is a hallmark of atopic dermatitis (AD). The composition of skin microbiome communities and the causality of dysbiosis in eczema have not been well established. The objective of this review is to describe the skin microbiome profile in AD and address whether there is a causal relationship between dysbiosis and AD. The protocol is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42016035813). We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus and ClinicalTrials.gov for primary research studies applying culture-independent analysis on the microbiome on AD skin of humans and animal models. Two authors independently screened

Many factors might be expected to influence the cutaneous microbiome, especially on diseased skin. Yet, few studies account for the complex interactions between host and environmental factors. To shed light on such interactions, we characterized the skin microbiome from 7 types of ichthyosis and confirmed previous reports of genotype-related and barrier-related effects. We then focused on the TGM1 genotype and assessed the association between the microbiome features and the ichthyosis genotype and phenotype while adjusting for contextual host covariables, including clinical treatments. We show

BACKGROUND: The skin microbiota is known to be imbalanced in acne vulgaris, but the changes occurring during the early stages of acne onset remain poorly described.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the skin microbiome of subclinical stages of acne in adults and adolescents.
METHODS: The composition and diversity of the microbiota from non-lesional skin on the forehead of subjects with mild-to-moderate acne were compared to the ones from non-acne subjects. Analyses of skin swab samples were performed using high-throughput sequencing of the V1-V3 regions of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene, the

The homeostasis of the skin microbiome can be disrupted by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors, leading to a state of dysbiosis. This imbalance has been observed at the onset of persistent skin diseases that are closely linked to mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. This narrative review explores recent findings on the relationship between the skin microbiome and the pathophysiology of specific skin disorders, including acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and wound infections. Additionally, it examines the psychological impact of these skin disorders, emphasizing the

Several research groups have confirmed that in the pathogenesis of the chronic inflammatory skin disorder rosacea, the composition of the skin and fecal microbiome of affected patients differs from that of healthy individuals. We studied the stool, blood and skin microbiomes of rosacea and control patients using 16S rRNA sequencing. Our goals were to determine 1. whether the microbiome characteristics of rosacea patients differ from that of healthy individuals, 2. whether the change experienced on the skin can be confirmed by alterations in the stool microbiome through the mediation of the blo

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disease that significantly impairs the quality of life of affected individuals. The disease is characterized by persistent purulent lesions in specific anatomical areas, and its pathophysiology involves multiple factors, including inflammation, genetics, the microbiome, and environmental components. Recent research suggests a potential role for pathogenic bacteria in HS, highlighting the importance of the communication between the human host and the microbiome in maintaining homeostasis and immune system reactivity. However, the exact mechanisms

Metagenome-assembled genomes have greatly expanded the reference genomes for skin microbiome. However, the current reference genomes are largely based on samples from adults in North America and lack representation from infants and individuals from other continents. Here we used ultra-deep shotgun metagenomic sequencing to profile the skin microbiota of 215 infants at age 2-3 months and 12 months who were part of the VITALITY trial in Australia as well as 67 maternally-matched samples. Based on the infant samples, we present the Early-Life Skin Genomes (ELSG) catalog, comprising 9,194 bacteria

The human microbiome encompasses the microorganisms that live in and on the body. During the prenatal and infantile periods, foundations for the cutaneous and gut microbiomes are being established and refined concurrently with the development of immune function. Herein, we review the relevance of the microbiome to 5 conditions commonly encountered in pediatric dermatology: acne, alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Understanding the role microbes play in these conditions may establish the groundwork for future therapeutic interventions.

Numerous scientific studies in recent years have shown significant skin and gut dysbiosis among patients with psoriasis. A significant decrease in microbiome alpha-diversity (abundance of different bacterial taxa measured in one sample) as well as beta-diversity (microbial diversity in different samples) was noted in psoriasis skin. It has been proven that the representation of Cutibacterium, Burkholderia spp., and Lactobacilli is decreased and Corynebacterium kroppenstedii, Corynebacterium simulans, Neisseria spp., and Finegoldia spp. increased in the psoriasis skin in comparison to healthy s

There is a growing quantity of evidence on how skin and gut microbiome composition impacts the course of various dermatological diseases. The strategies involving the modulation of bacterial composition are increasingly in the focus of research attention. The aim of the present review was to analyze the literature available in PubMed (MEDLINE) and EMBASE databases on the topic of microbiome modulation in skin diseases. The effects and possible mechanisms of action of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics in dermatological conditions including atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, chronic ulcers,

The skin microbiome plays important roles in the pathogenesis and development of acne. We aimed to investigate the facial skin microbiome of acne and microbiome differences related to different grades of acne. Skin swabs from nine healthy controls and 67 acne patients were collected, and the skin microbiomes were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Compared with healthy controls, acne patients harbored significantly altered skin microbiomes. The skin microbiomes of patients with grade 1-3 acne were similar, but patients with grade 4 acne showed a significantly different skin microbiome co

Bats are geographically widespread and play an important role in many ecosystems, but relatively little is known about the ecology of their associated microbial communities and the role microbial taxa play in bat health, development, and evolution. Moreover, few vertebrate animal skin microbiomes have been comprehensively assessed, and thus characterizing the bat skin microbiome will yield valuable insight into the variability of vertebrate skin microbiomes as a whole. The recent emergence of the skin fungal disease white-nose syndrome highlights the potentially important role bat skin microbi

INTRODUCTION: Human and animal skin is colonized by a complex microbial population. An imbalance of these microorganisms is often associated with dermatological diseases.
METHODS: The aim of this work was to describe the skin bacterial microbiota composition of healthy dogs and dogs with inflammatory skin lesions. Genomic DNA was sequenced using primers that target the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Superficial skin swabs were collected from eight body areas of six healthy dogs (n = 48) and directly from inflammatory altered canine skin (n = 16).
RESULTS: The skin of healthy dogs

The cutaneous microbiome represents a highly dynamic community of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Scientific evidence, particularly from the last two decades, has revealed that these organisms are far from being inconsequential microscopic hitchhikers on the human body, nor are they all opportunistic pathogens waiting for the chance to penetrate the skin barrier and cause infection. In this review, we will describe how dermatological diseases have been found to be associated with disruptions and imbalances in the skin microbiome and how this new evidence had shaped the diagnosis and clinical prac

Chronic wounds cause a significant burden on society financially, medically, and psychologically. Unfortunately, patients with nonhealing wounds often suffer from comorbidities that further compound their disability. Given the high rate of depressive symptoms experienced by patients with chronic wounds, further studies are needed to investigate the potentially linked pathophysiological changes in wounds and depression in order to improve patient care. The English literature on wound healing, inflammatory and microbial changes in chronic wounds and depression, and antiinflammatory and probiotic

This study of the outcome and prognostic factors in prenatally diagnosed agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) was undertaken to see if there are any differences between subgroups, what relationship they have to neurodevelopmental outcome and whether this information aids the counselling of parents of fetuses with the condition. The outcome of 14 prenatally diagnosed fetuses with ACC and 61 postnatally diagnosed patients was assessed in terms of clinical problems, developmental milestones and neurological signs; each patient was then given a score out of 10, 0 being a normal outcome and 10 bei

The skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) is in a state of dysbiosis, having a microbiome of reduced diversity dominated by exacerbators such as Staphylococcus aureus and by fungal taxa such as Malassezia. As the symptoms of AD improve, microbial diversity increases and the level of colonization by exacerbators decreases. The level of skin colonization is correlated with scores on AD evaluation indices, thus the goal of AD treatment is to improve dysbiosis. Although Malassezia species exacerbate AD, they also secrete proteases that inhibit the formation of biofilm by Staphylococcus aure

Chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) is frequent in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis and is often difficult to control. While systemic drivers are recognized, how the chronically altered skin microenvironment and its microbiome relate to itch severity remains insufficiently defined. In this single-center study, hemodialysis patients and healthy controls underwent pooled skin microbiome profiling by full-length 16 S rRNA sequencing, with differential taxa, functional features, and clinical associations analyzed using multivariate and correlation-based approaches. OBJECTIVE: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a known environmental key factor for premature skin ageing. Only few scientific evidence is available to support the effects of UVR on the skin microbiome. This in vivo pilot study aimed to evaluate the impact on the skin microbiome upon erythemal UV exposure and the protection of UV-exposed skin microbiome by UV filters.
METHODS: Ten female volunteers were treated with an sun protection factor (SPF) 20 sunscreen and placebo formulation (without UV filters) on their upper middle backs and irradiated with an erythemal dose (2 MED) by a solar simulator.
