Skin temperature variability is an independent predictor of survival in patients with cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Cirrhosis is a disease with multisystem involvement. It has been documented that patients with cirrhosis exhibit abnormal patterns of fluctuation in their body temperature. However, the clinical significance of this phenomenon is not well understood. The aim of this study was to determine if temperature variability analysis can predict survival in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS: Thirty eight inpatients with cirrhosis were enrolled in the study. Wireless temperature sensors were used to record patients' proximal skin temperature for 24 hr. The pattern of proximal temperature fluc

Arterio-venous anastomoses in the human skin and their role in temperature control.

Arterio-venous anastomoses (AVAs) are direct connections between small arteries and small veins. In humans they are numerous in the glabrous skin of the hands and feet. The AVAs are short vessel segments with a large inner diameter and a very thick muscular wall. They are densely innervated by adrenergic axons. When they are open, they provide a low-resistance connection between arteries and veins, shunting blood directly into the venous plexuses of the limbs. The AVAs play an important role in temperature regulation in humans in their thermoneutral zone, which for a naked resting human is abo

Skin temperature of the hand in multiple system atrophy and Parkinson's disease.

AIM: A previous study on a small number of patients showed that low skin temperature of the hands, the so called "cold hands sign", may be useful for distinguishing multiple system atrophy (MSA) from Parkinson's disease (PD). We have further investigated skin temperature of the hand in a larger number of patients. METHODS: Skin temperature on the palm was measured in 50 MSA (11 MSA-P and 39 MSA-C patients) and 50 PD patients, and 25 normal healthy subjects. RESULTS: Palm skin temperature was significantly lower in MSA patients (32.0 ± 2.7 °C) than in controls (34.1 ± 0.9 °C, p = 0.0002), but

Continuous non-invasive monitoring of the skin temperature of HSCT recipients.

Goals of workEmpirical antibiotic therapy usually started in patients who are neutropenic following treatment with cytostatic chemotherapy for a haematological malignancy as soon as fever develops to forestall fulminant sepsis. Hence, accurate and timely detection of fever is crucial to the successful management of infectious complications in these patients. We report an investigation of the feasibility and validity of continuous non-invasive body temperature measurement.Patients and methodsThe feasibility of non-invasive continuous measurement of the skin temperature was investigated using th

Validation of a non-contact technique for local skin temperature measurements.

UNLABELLED: Here we propose to quantify local temperature variations using thermal imaging to assess the effect of dermatological lasers. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the temperature raise induced by laser application and to differentiate the effects of a potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser and an intense pulsed light (IPL). METHODS: A randomized comparative study was performed on 10 adult volunteers with symmetrical rosacea treated by KTP laser or IPL. Skin temperature measurements were performed on inclusion, immediately after laser treatment and 3 min after thermal water application, using

Relationship between ambient temperature and heat flux in the scrotal skin.

Excessive scrotal heating or cooling may lead to the cessation of spermatogenesis. Data regarding heat exchange rates in scrotal skin can be used to control testicular temperature within the appropriate range. Heat flux (HF) in the scrotal skin surface is generated based on the surrounding environment. This study aims to elucidate the HF of scrotal skin by varying ambient temperature. Twenty college students including seven varicoceles volunteered as the subjects (mean age: 22.95 +/- SD 1.96 years; height: 175.00 +/- 5.17 cm; weight: 68.40 +/- 8.65 kg; body mass index: 22.28 +/- 2.15), and par

Variations of skin temperature in patients with craniofacial pain. A thermographic evaluation.

Thermography of craniofacial region was taken in 33 patients with different types of craniofacial pain. In 26 patients (78%) a thermal asymmetry was found which corresponded to the painful area in 19 patients (57%). It can be concluded that temperature alterations in different areas of the face are common in such patients and are probably the consequence of functional alterations of the sympathetic system.

Kinetics of skin temperature in lower limbs of professional soccer athletes.

This study investigated the kinetics of skin temperature (Tsk) in the lower limbs of elite soccer players following official matches, with measurements taken at three time points: pre-game (M1), 24 hours after a match (M2), and 48 hours after a match (M3). Additionally, we explored the correlation between Tsk and individualized creatine kinase (CK) levels. Thirty male athletes from a top-tier professional soccer club were assessed during the Brazilian Serie A Championship. CK levels and Tsk in the lower limbs were recorded at M1, M2, and M3. Tsk was significantly elevated at M2 compared to M1

Impact of Water Exposure and Temperature Changes on Skin Barrier Function.

The frequency of hand hygiene has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is little evidence regarding the impact of water exposure and temperature on skin. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of water exposure and temperature on skin barrier function in healthy individuals. A prospective observational study was conducted. Temperature, pH, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) were measured objectively before and after hot- and cold-water exposure and TempTest® (Microcaya TempTest, Bilbao, Spain) contact. Fifty healthy volunteers w

Relationship of skin temperature to sympathetic dysfunction in diabetic at-risk feet.

The relationship of plantar skin temperature to diabetic neuropathy was studied using clinical, nerve conduction and autonomic evaluations. The sympathetic skin response (SSR) was found present in both feet of 25 control subjects and 29 (out of 69) diabetic patients (SSR+ group). For those diabetic patients absent with the SSR in both feet, 18 patients (at-risk group) had preulcerative skin lesions (dry and fissured skin) and 22 did not (SSR- group). The at-risk group showed significantly higher mean foot temperature (30.2+/-1.3 degrees Celsius) than the SSR- (27.9+/-1.7 degrees Celsius), the

Responses of thalamic neurons in rats to skin cooling and hypothalamic temperature.

The responses of rat thalamic neurons to skin cooling were electrophysiologically examined. The responses of cold-excited neurons were classified into two types. One is a steplike response in which the activity abruptly increases with skin cooling, and the other is a graded response in which the activity gradually increases with skin cooling. The sites of these neurons were histologically identified in the ventrobasal complex of the thalamus, ventrolateral thalamus, and posterior thalamus. Two-thirds of them were found in a marginal region of the ventrobasal complex. There is no specific local

Elevation of intratesticular and scrotal skin surface temperature in men with varicocele.

A possible mechanism of varicocele-induced infertility is believed to be elevation of testicular temperature. Sensitive needle thermistors were used to measure directly intratesticular and bilateral scrotal surface temperatures simultaneously in anesthetized infertile men with varicocele and control subjects. We found that intratesticular temperature is elevated significantly in humans with varicocele. In addition, we have shown that scrotal skin surface temperature is elevated in men with varicocele. Furthermore, we demonstrate that unilateral varicocele is associated with bilateral elevation

The effects of position and skin temperature on the capillary pressures in the fingers and toes.

1. Direct measurements of the capillary pressure (P(c)) were made in capillaries at the base of the nails of the fingers and toes of two subjects (the authors of this paper).2. With the hand or foot at heart level, P(c) varied over the range of 7-70 cm H(2)O with mean values of 43 cm H(2)O in both the fingers and the toes. P(c) was higher in the arterial limb (mean 49 cm H(2)O) than in the venous limb (mean 34 cm H(2)O) of the capillary loops. The plasma colloid osmotic pressures for the two subjects were 33 and 34 cm H(2)O.3. For capillaries at heart level there was a strong positive correlat

State-dependent skin temperature increase during manic episodes of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Skin temperature changes during mood episodes and can be continuously monitored through wearable devices, potentially serving as a digital biomarker. We aimed to describe differences in skin temperature among bipolar disorder affective episodes and after symptomatic remission. METHODS: We collected skin temperature through E4 wearable devices from a sample of 104 bipolar disorder patients in depressive, manic, or euthymic states, and 35 healthy controls. Participants in manic and depressive states were monitored for 48 h during acute episodes and after clinical remission, while eu
