Glucocorticoids influence brain glycogen levels during sleep deprivation.

Animal studies indicate that opioids inhibit the firing rate of vestibular neurons, which are important in mediating the vestibulosympathetic reflex. Furthermore, this inhibition appears to be greater in more mature rats. In the present study, we tested the hypotheses that opioids inhibit the vestibulosympathetic reflex in humans and that endogenous opioids contribute to the age-related impairment of the vestibulosympathetic reflex. These hypotheses were tested by measuring muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), arterial blood pressure, and heart rate responses to otolith organ engagement d

Legal considerations of sleep deprivation among resident physicians.

Medical training in the United States often takes the form of a grueling endurance test in which patients are often those most at risk. This Article discusses sleep deprivation among resident physicians in the United States with an eye towards resolving the problem through legal channels. It analyzes the effects of sleep deprivation on resident physicians, with subsequent discussion of the implications for patient care and medical training. Next, it makes comparisons to medical training in other developed nations, as well as regulations that exist in the airline and trucking industries, where

Sleep Disturbances and Male Reproductive Dysfunction: Pathophysiological Mechanisms Linking Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Sleep Deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep deprivation, are critical yet underrecognized contributors to male reproductive dysfunction. Both conditions disrupt endocrine homeostasis, reducing testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels, which are central regulators of spermatogenesis. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the mechanisms linking OSA and sleep deprivation to impaired male fertility, with emphasis on endocrine, oxidative, and inflammatory pathways. METHODS: We conducted a structured, non-systematic narrative rev

[Bidirectional links between sleep deprivation and neurodegenerative diseases].

Sleep is essential for maintaining homeostatic functions, supporting optimal brain activity, and facilitating recovery processes. The clinical consequences of sleep deprivation and sleep disorders require an integrated approach to diagnosis and therapy, as these conditions affect the progression and development of various diseases and systemic pathological processes. Sleep disturbances are a significant global health concern. This article reviews the potential impact and bidirectional associations between sleep deprivation and the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. The mechanisms underlying th

A resting-state EEG dataset for sleep deprivation.

To investigate the impact of sleep deprivation (SD) on mood, alertness, and resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG), we present an eyes-open resting-state EEG dataset. The dataset comprises EEG recordings and cognitive data from 71 participants undergoing two testing sessions: one involving SD and the other normal sleep. In each session, participants engaged in eyes-open resting-state EEG. The Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) was employed for alertness measurement. Emotional and sleepiness were measured using Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) and Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS). Addi

Sleep deprivation prevents counterregulatory adaptation to recurrent hypoglycaemia.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Attenuated counterregulation after recurrent hypoglycaemia is a major complication of diabetes treatment. As there is previous evidence for the relevance of sleep in metabolic control, we assessed the acute contribution of sleep to the counterregulatory adaptation to recurrent hypoglycaemia. METHODS: Within a balanced crossover design, 15 healthy, normal-weight male participants aged 18-35 years underwent three hyperinsulinaemic-hypoglycaemic clamps with a glucose nadir of 2.5 mmol/l, under two experimental conditions, sleep and sleep deprivation. Participants were exposed to

Early sleep deprivation and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to study prospectively specific sleep patterns and risk of ADHD after adjusting for potential confounders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and methylphenidate use. METHODS: A population-representative sample of 514 Chinese preschool children was recruited when in kindergarten (K3). Parents reported on their socioeconomic status and children's sleep duration. The cohort was reassessed 3 years later when the children were in Grade 3 (P3). Parents reported on children's sleep patterns and ADHD symptoms. Information on OSA diagnosis and methylphenidate use was re

Regulation of hippocampal dendritic spines following sleep deprivation.

Accumulating evidence supports the role of sleep in synaptic plasticity and memory consolidation. One line of investigation, the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis, has emphasized the increase in synaptic strength during waking, and compensatory downsizing of (presumably less frequently used) synapses during sleep. Conversely, other studies have reported downsizing and loss of dendritic spines following sleep deprivation. We wanted to determine the effect of sleep deprivation on dendritic spines of hippocampal CA1 neurons using genetic methods for fluorescent labeling of dendritic spines. Male Vg

Creatine supplementation, sleep deprivation, cortisol, melatonin and behavior.

The effect of creatine supplementation and sleep deprivation, with intermittent moderate-intensity exercise, on cognitive and psychomotor performance, mood state, effort and salivary concentrations of cortisol and melatonin were examined. Subjects were divided into a creatine supplementation group and a placebo group. They took 5 g of creatine monohydrate or a placebo, dependent on their group, four times a day for 7 days immediately prior to the experiment. They undertook tests examining central executive functioning, short-term memory, choice reaction time, balance, mood state and effort at

Activation of EEG recordings by graded sleep deprivation.

Part I. The EEG recordings of 434 patients were activated by graded sleep deprivation. In clinically manifest epilepsies with a predominantly negative EEG tracing at rest the incidence of epileptic manifestations increased after sleep deprivation from 18.03% to 59.01%, in clinically suspect epilepsies from 6.4% to 39.0%. In other paroxysmal affections such as febrile convulsions, syncopes and collapses, paroxysms of abdominal pain or headaches, affective paroxysms and nocturnal terrors, the tracing activation by sleep deprivation mostly facilitated differential diagnosis between those affectio

Sleep deprivation in prion protein deficient mice sleep deprivation in prion protein deficient mice and control mice: genotype dependent regional rebound.

We have previously reported a larger and more prolonged increase of slow wave activity (SWA) in NREM sleep after sleep deprivation (SD) in prion protein deficient mice (PrP) compared to wild-type mice. Regional differences in the SWA increase were investigated by comparing the effect of 6 h SD on a frontal and occipital derivation in PrP deficient mice and wild-type mice. The larger increase of SWA after SD in PrP deficient mice was restricted to the occipital derivation. The difference appeared after the waking-NREM sleep transitions, making it unlikely that PrP is involved in the mechanisms

Role of corticosterone on sleep homeostasis induced by REM sleep deprivation in rats.

Sleep is regulated by humoral and homeostatic processes. If on one hand chronic elevation of stress hormones impair sleep, on the other hand, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation induces elevation of glucocorticoids and time of REM sleep during the recovery period. In the present study we sought to examine whether manipulations of corticosterone levels during REM sleep deprivation would alter the subsequent sleep rebound. Adult male Wistar rats were fit with electrodes for sleep monitoring and submitted to four days of REM sleep deprivation under repeated corticosterone or metyrapone (an

Effect of Virtual Reality on Sleep-Deprived Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation (SD) refers to getting less than the required amount of sleep, which for adults ranges from 7 to 9 h of sleep per night and can be caused by social and biological factors. College students experience SD, which can affect their academic performance, health, and mood. Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), an upcoming method of intervention, has been used in other psychological conditions with positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of VRT on individuals with SD. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study recruited 28 individuals based on the s

Effect of sleep deprivation on hearing levels in rats.

OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, the influence of sleep deprivation on hearing levels has yet to be assessed in animals. Therefore, we evaluated whether auditory function was affected by sleep deprivation in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats (aged 9 weeks, weighing 300-400 g) were used for the study and were randomly assigned to a control (n = 15) or sleep deprivation group (n = 12). Hearing levels were evaluated at baseline and 9 days after sleep deprivation using auditory evoked brainstem responses (ABRs) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements. The impact of sleep deprivation on visual perspective taking.

Total sleep deprivation (TSD) is known to alter cognitive processes. Surprisingly little attention has been paid to its impact on social cognition. Here, we investigated whether TSD alters levels-1 and -2 visual perspective-taking abilities, i.e. the capacity to infer (a) what can be seen and (b) how it is seen from another person's visual perspective, respectively. Participants completed levels-1 and -2 visual perspective-taking tasks after a night of sleep and after a night of TSD. In these tasks, participants had to take their own (self trials) or someone else's (other trials) visual perspe

Effects of Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation on Microvascular Anastomoses.

Previous studies have investigated the effects of various human-based factors, such as tremor, exercise, and posture, on microsurgical performance. In this study, the authors investigated the effects of sleep deprivation and fatigue on microsurgery. A total of 48 Wistar Hannover rats were divided into 3 groups (16 anastomoses in each group) to be operated on at 3 different times: in the morning at 08:00 hours (group I), at night on the same day (01:00 h, group II), and the next morning at 09:00 hours (group III) following a night with no sleep. The blindly evaluated parameters were anastomotic

The unipolar-bipolar dichotomy and the response to sleep deprivation.

Fifty-one inpatients affected by a major depressive episode were divided into four groups according to mood disorder diagnosis and previous clinical history (bipolar disorder type I; bipolar disorder type II; major depressive disorder with at least three previous depressive episodes; and single depressive episode patients) and administered three consecutive total sleep deprivation (TSD) cycles. Mood changes were rated with a reduced version of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and with self-administered visual analogue scales. TSD caused better clinical effects in bipolar and single-episode
