The relationship between social support and sleep quality in older adults: A review of the evidence.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep quality is crucial for the health and well-being of older adults, and social support has been consistently shown to be related to sleep quality. However, there is a need for research to understand the mechanisms through which these two factors are linked. The purpose of this review is to synthesize scientific literature on the relationship between social support and sleep quality in older adults. METHODS: Using an integrative review method, this review was conducted for a period from January 2012 to November 2022 using a combination of keywords related to social support and

Distinct phenotypic clusters of sleep-disordered breathing and their association with medical care-seeking behaviour and sleep habits: the Guangdong Sleep Health Study.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is highly prevalent, but its rates of diagnosis and treatment are low. As a heterogeneous condition, it is associated with delayed diagnosis and/or suboptimal treatment. We aimed to determine distinct SDB clusters and examine their association with medical care-seeking behaviour and sleep habits in a community-dwelling population in South China. Participants were enrolled in the 'Guangdong Sleep Health Study'. Five distinct community sites were investigated. Participant information was collected, and overnight sleep monitoring was performed. Latent class analys

Alpha-delta sleep pattern in an acute functional neurological patient with no perception of sleep.

UNLABELLED: Functional neurological disorders are characterized by neurologic symptoms not consistent with a primary neurologic pathology. Although neurological disorders are commonly associated with poor sleep, alpha intrusion of slow-wave sleep is not described in cases of functional neurological disorder. We describe a case demonstrating an alpha-delta sleep pattern in a patient presenting with a functional neurological disorder and no perception of sleep. Although alpha-delta sleep is more commonly associated with fibromyalgia, this pattern may be a potential biomarker for the physiology o

Prevalence of insomnia and poor sleep quality in the prison population: A systematic review.

Insomnia is a public health concern with several associated negative health-related outcomes. Risk factors for insomnia place the prison population at an increased risk of inadequate sleep. This paper systematically reviewed the literature reporting on the prevalence of insomnia and poor sleep quality in the prison population. Following a comprehensive database search and screening process, 12 studies were eligible for inclusion in this review. Six studies provided prevalence rates for insomnia and nine for poor sleep quality. Varied prevalence rates were found for insomnia (i.e. 26.2%-72.5%)

Metabolomics in Sleep, Insomnia and Sleep Apnea.

Sleep-wake disorders are highly prevalent disorders, which can lead to negative effects on cognitive, emotional and interpersonal functioning, and can cause maladaptive metabolic changes. Recent studies support the notion that metabolic processes correlate with sleep. The study of metabolite biomarkers (metabolomics) in a large-scale manner offers unique opportunities to provide insights into the pathology of diseases by revealing alterations in metabolic pathways. This review aims to summarize the status of metabolomic analyses-based knowledge on sleep disorders and to present knowledge in un

Bidirectional interactions between the baroreceptor reflex and arousal: an update.

Studies involving genetic engineering on animal models and mathematical analysis of cardiovascular signals on humans are shedding new light on the interactions between the arterial baroreceptor reflex (baroreflex) and arousal. Baroreceptor stimulation, if very mild or performed under anaesthesia, may inhibit cortical arousal. However, substantial increases or decreases in baroreflex activation cause arousal in animal models and human subjects in physiological conditions. On the other hand, cardiovascular changes during autonomic arousals and between the states of wakefulness and sleep involve

Antidepressants and sleep: a qualitative review of the literature.

Most antidepressants change sleep; in particular, they alter the physiological patterns of sleep stages recorded overnight with EEG and other physiological measures. These effects are greatest and most consistent on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and tend to be in the opposite direction to the sleep abnormalities found in major depression, but are usually of greater degree. Reductions in the amount of REM sleep and increases in REM sleep onset latency are seen after taking antidepressants, both in healthy volunteers and in depressed patients. Antidepressants that increase serotonin function b

Sleep architecture and sleep-disordered breathing in fatal insomnia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Fatal insomnia (FI) is a rare prion disease severely affecting sleep architecture. Breathing during sleep has not been systematically assessed. Our aim was to characterize the sleep architecture, respiratory patterns, and neuropathologic findings in FI. METHODS: Eleven consecutive FI patients (ten familial, one sporadic) were examined with video-polysomnography (vPSG) between 2002 and 2017. Wake/sleep stages and respiration were evaluated using a modified scoring system. Postmortem neuropathology was assessed in seven patients. RESULTS: Median age at onset was 48 years and

Relationships between rumination and different types of rapid eye movement sleep in patients with chronic insomnia disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rumination, a common factor of chronic insomnia disorder (CID) caused by cognitive-emotional arousal, is associated with an increased amount of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. However, the specific subtypes, such as phasic REM and tonic REM, that contribute to the increased REM sleep have not been reported. This study aimed to determine the association between rumination and different REM sleep subtypes in patients with CID. METHODS: This study enrolled 35 patients with CID and 27 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The Immersion-Rumination Questionnaire evaluated

Insomnia Is Not a Normal Part of Aging: The Challenges of Safely and Effectively Managing Insomnia in Older People.

Almost everyone has sleep problems from time to time, and often, simple nonpharmacologic interventions can improve sleep hygiene. When nonpharmacologic interventions fail, patients often request and may even require treatment with hypnotics. Insomnia is a heterogeneous disorder. Patients with insomnia may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. Sleep disturbances are especially common in older people because of changes in sleep architecture. Though this population may benefit from hypnotics to improve sleep, these drugs increase the risk of polypharmacy, drug interact

Foster Caregivers' Perceptions of Children's Sleep Patterns, Problems, and Environments.

OBJECTIVE: The disparity of problems, impairments, and disorders among children in foster care is well-documented and spans virtually every domain of functioning. Sleep, however, has received minimal attention among this vulnerable group, which is concerning given the multitude of ways sleep affects children's development, health, and behavior. METHODS: A total of 485 foster caregivers from across the United States completed a survey including quantitative items and qualitative, open-ended questions about sleep and related health and behavior for one child (M = 6.4 years, SD = 2.2; range 4-11

Sleep disturbances in newly diagnosed treatment-naïve patients with Wilson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Most neurodegenerative and chronic liver disorders are associated with sleep disturbances (SD). SD may be expected to occur in patients with Wilson's disease (WD), an inherited disorder of copper metabolism that mostly affects the liver and brain; however, there is a lack of observations, particularly in treatment-naïve WD patients. METHODS: We evaluated SD in 19 newly diagnosed treatment-naïve WD patients. All patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and underwent nightlong video polysomnogra

Sleep outcomes in pediatric mild traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence and contributing factors.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the prevalence of disturbed sleep in children who sustained mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). METHODS: We conducted electronic searches of three databases MEDLINE, PsychINFO and EMBASE against pre-determined inclusion/exclusion criteria. We used the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS: Forty-four articles met the inclusion criteria. The risk of bias was mainly rated as moderate to high. Meta-analysis revealed that prevalence of sleep disturbances decreased as the time since injury increased: 51%, 40% and 9% within 1 week, between 1

Herbal Remedies and Their Possible Effect on the GABAergic System and Sleep.

Sleep is an essential component of physical and emotional well-being, and lack, or disruption, of sleep due to insomnia is a highly prevalent problem. The interest in complementary and alternative medicines for treating or preventing insomnia has increased recently. Centuries-old herbal treatments, popular for their safety and effectiveness, include valerian, passionflower, lemon balm, lavender, and Californian poppy. These herbal medicines have been shown to reduce sleep latency and increase subjective and objective measures of sleep quality. Research into their molecular components revealed

What do we really know about the safety and efficacy of melatonin for sleep disorders?

Melatonin is a hormonal product of the pineal gland, a fact that is often forgotten. Instead it is promoted as a dietary supplement that will overcome insomnia, as an antioxidant and as a prescription only drug in most countries outside the United States of America and Canada. The aim of this review is to step back and highlight what we know about melatonin following its discovery 60 years ago. What is the role of endogenous melatonin; what does melatonin do to sleep, body temperature, circadian rhythms, the cardiovascular system, reproductive system, endocrine system and metabolism when admin
