Sleep and epilepsy interact with each other in a complex bidirectional way. The main objective of this study was to characterize and determine the prevalence of sleep and behavioral disorders among Italian children and adolescents with epilepsy. We asked 84 consecutive parents/caregivers of patients with epilepsy aged between 6 and 17 years old to fill out the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children (SDSC) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). An abnormal total sleep score was found in 20 subjects with epilepsy (23.8%), compared with 4 (4.4%) of control group (P < .001). Forty-eight patients (57.

Postural tone is reduced during slow-wave sleep (SWS) and absent during rapid eye movement sleep (REMS). In obstructive sleep apnea subjects, upper airway dilating muscles, including those of the tongue, show a similar pattern; this contributes to sleep-related airway obstructions. However, in healthy subjects, state-dependent changes in the activity of pharyngeal muscles are variable. In seven chronically instrumented Sprague-Dawley rats, an animal model used to study sleep and sleep-disordered breathing, we quantified lingual and postural muscle activity across the sleep-wake states by measu

The tight regulation of sleep/wake states is critical for mental and physiological wellbeing. For example, dysregulation of sleep/wake systems predisposes individuals to metabolic disorders such as obesity and psychiatric problems, including depression. Contributing to this understanding, the last decade has seen significant advances in our appreciation of the complex interactions between brain systems that control the transition between sleep and wake states. Pivotal to our increased understanding of this pathway was the description of a group of neurons in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) that

Autonomic function during sleep and wakefulness has been extensively investigated, however information concerning autonomic changes during the wake to sleep transition is scarce. The objective of the present study was to non-invasively characterize autonomic function and additional physiologic changes during sleep onset in normal and abnormal sleep. The estimation of autonomic function was based on time-frequency analysis of the RR interval series, using the power components in the very-low-frequency range (0.005-0.04 Hz), low-frequency (0.04-0.15 Hz), and high-frequency range (0.15-0.5 Hz). AIM: Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a rare multisystem genetic disorder characterized by cholestatic liver disease, severe pruritus, and various systemic abnormalities. Sleep disturbances are a significant aspect of the disease burden. This study investigated sleep habits and disturbances in children with ALGS and their caregivers.
METHODS: The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) were administered to 13 children with ALGS and compared with age- and sex-matched controls (N = 13; total sample = 26), while the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Ind

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Women experience more sleep disruptions than men, particularly during hormonal transitions such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. This study investigated the role of estradiol (E2) in regulating sleep-wake behavior in female rats and identified the brain regions involved.
METHODS: Using an exogenous E2 replacement model in ovariectomized rats, we assessed changes in sleep-wake patterns via electroencephalographic/electromyogram telemetry. The effects of E2 and progesterone, selective estrogen receptor agonists, and direct brain infusions of E2 and receptor antagonists we

A widespread network of respiratory-related neurons within the brainstem controls the regular respiratory cycle, which is dependent upon unspecific and specific drives like hypoxia or hypercapnia. This respiratory network and its respiratory drives are subjects to typical changes during the transition from wakefulness to sleep and within the various sleep states, which favor a destabilization of breathing during sleep. There is also a respiratory-related innervation of the dilating and stiffening pharyngeal muscles as well as a local reflex control of the basic tone of upper airway muscles, bo

The cyclical nature of periodic switches in energy, motor activation and sleep-wake cycles in bipolar disorder suggests a strong underlying relationship with disturbances in chronobiology. Current research is refining our understanding of the various patterns of sleep-wake and biological rhythms alterations at early and later stages of this illness, as well as across its depressive/fatigue, manic/hypomanic and euthymic phases. This research focuses on early detection and subsequent monitoring to predict and better manage recurrent episodes. Sleep-wake cycle and biological rhythms disturbances

Narcolepsy patients often suffer from insomnia in addition to excessive daytime sleepiness. Narcoleptic animals also show behavioral instability characterized by frequent transitions between all vigilance states, exhibiting very short bouts of NREM sleep as well as wakefulness. The instability of wakefulness states in narcolepsy is thought to be due to deficiency of orexins, neuropeptides produced in the lateral hypothalamic neurons, which play a highly important role in maintaining wakefulness. However, the mechanism responsible for sleep instability in this disorder remains to be elucidated.

Sleep changes throughout the lifespan, with particularly salient alterations occurring during the first few years of life, as well as during the transition from childhood to adolescence. Such changes are partly the result of brain maturation; complex changes in the organisation of the circadian system; as well as changes in daily routine, environmental demands and responsibilities. Despite the automaticity of sleep, given that it is governed by a host of complex mechanisms, there are times when sleep becomes disturbed. Sleep disturbances in childhood are common and may stem from behavioural di

Substance use (SU) and sleep problems appear interrelated, but few studies have examined the influence of adolescent sleep patterns on development of SU disorders. This study prospectively examined the influence of sleep habits on subsequent SU in youth who later transitioned into heavy drinking. At time 1 (T1), participants (n = 95) were substance-naive 12- to 14-year-olds. Path-analytic models examined whether the effects of T1 risk factors (familial SU disorder, inhibition control, and externalizing and internalizing traits) on time 3 (M = 19.8 years old) tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis were

OBJECTIVE: Iron deficiency (ID), without or with anemia (IDA), has been linked to restless sleep and sleep-related movement disorders in childhood, but objective correlates are incompletely defined. We aimed to describe caregiver-reported sleep disturbances, restless legs syndrome (RLS) - related symptoms, and actigraphic sleep patterns in children and adolescents with ID/IDA, and to compare these findings with available sleep-asymptomatic control datasets. We finally explored short-term changes after iron supplementation.
METHODS: In this single-center pilot observational study, 31 children
