Slovakia reports highest occurrence of alimentary tick-borne encephalitis in Europe: Analysis of tick-borne encephalitis outbreaks in Slovakia during 2007-2016.

BACKGROUND: Slovakia is well-known for tick-borne encephalitis alimentary (TBE) outbreaks in Europe for a long time. Since the first known and largest TBE alimentary outbreak in 1951 (at territory of Slovakia) until today, none of the European countries report a comparable number of TBE alimentary outbreaks with probable and laboratory confirmed food transmission factor as Slovakia. METHODS: We analyzed TBE outbreak confirmed cases reported in Slovakia from web-based Epidemiological Information System (EPIS) during the period 2007-2016. RESULTS: During years 2007-2016 we recorded 26 TBE alim

Unexpectedly high prevalence of familial Mediterranean fever in Slovakia.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most common monogenic periodic fever syndrome among all monogenic autoinflammatory diseases. It is characterised by recurrent, self-limited fever attacks of short duration, polyserositis symptoms, and elevated acute-phase reactants. FMF has the highest prevalence in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The first descriptions of FMF cases in Central Europe date back to 2014. The prevalence in the Central European region was previously estimated at 1:465,500 in the paediatric population, with data on adult prevalence lacking. Patients with FMF who fulfilled

DIAGNOSTIC REFERENCE LEVELS IN SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY CENTERS IN SLOVAKIA.

Optimization in mammography remains the most important tool in practice. In the optimization process, we look for a balanced relationship between image quality and patient dose. For mammographic examinations, the diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are expressed as the average glandular dose (AGD) based on the thickness of the compressed breast. The aim of this study was to analyse DRL compliance in diagnostic mammography at 16 mammography screening centres using an automated system for tracking patient doses during the period between January 2020 and December 2020 and to subsequently propose n

Increasing occurrence of oropharyngeal cancers among males in Slovakia.

The gradual decline of oropharyngeal cancers in postwar period was followed by their rapid increase during recent two decades among males in Slovakia. Overall age-adjusted incidence rates of cancers of oral cavity and pharynx increased from 4.5 in 1968-1970 to 20.7 in 1990-1992 and corresponding mortality rates from 2.8 to 14.0 per 100,000 males. Oropharyngeal cancers have recently accounted for 6.5% of all newly diagnosed cancers yearly and present the fourth most frequent cancer site among males in this country. The cancers of tongue, floor of mouth, oropharynx and hypopharynx are responsibl

Epidemiological features of biliary tract cancer incidence in Slovakia.

This descriptive study is based on detailed data of biliary tract cancer incidence in Slovakia in the period 1968-1977. Age-adjusted incidence rates of biliary tract cancer in the given decade decreased in females while in males they showed a slight increase. The study of geographic distribution revealed diminishing incidence rates from west to the east in both sexes with extremely elevated rates in towns and suburban districts in males. Different shapes of age-specific incidence curves together with the identified histological types suggested different epidemiological characteristics of indiv

Seroprevalence of Trichinella infections in domestic dogs from Slovakia.

Trichinellosis is constantly present in the sylvatic cycle in Slovakia, with several sporadic human outbreaks registered since the 1960s. The largest outbreak of trichinellosis occurred in 1998 and was related to the consumption of dog meat that had been added to smoked pork sausages. The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of Trichinella infection in domestic dogs in various regions of Slovakia. Out of 439 dogs tested, 56 (12.8%) were classified as a seropositive based on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), with confirmation by Western blotting. The highest seropos

Comparative studies on sindbis virus strains isolated in Slovakia.

Two variants of Sindbis virus strains were distinguished according to the dextran sulphate (DS) marker. Large-plague strains freshly isolated from Cricetus cricetus and Rana ridibunda produced exclusively small plaques after DS treatment. The prototype Sindbis virus strain produced both large and small plaques after DS treatment. Kinetic haemagglutination-inhibition tests revealed a higher reactivity of freshly isolated strains than of the prototype strain. For differentiation of newly isolated strains of Sindbis virus, their sensitivity to sodium deoxycholate is recommended: a freshly isolate

First detection of Blastocystis sp. in pigs in Slovakia and in Europe.

Blastocystis sp. is a single-cell microorganism occurring in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and various animals and is distributed worldwide. Blastocystis exhibits extensive genetic diversity of 28 subtypes (STs) based on the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. In this study, the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of Blastocystis were evaluated using pig faecal samples from two farms in Slovakia. Blastocystis spp. were detected in pigs intended for distribution and consumption. ST 5 subtype was identified in all positive samples and age categories with a prevalence of 12%.

Lyme borreliosis--analysis of the trends in Slovakia, 1999-2008.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) presents as one of the most frequent tick-borne diseases in Europe with more than 85,000 reported cases every year. The transport of this disease on humans is by tick species of the genus Ixodes. In our work, we aimed to perform a retrospective analysis of the incidence and seasonality of Lyme borreliosis during the period 1999-2008 in Slovakia. For our analysis, we used all the relevant data about the patients with Lyme borreliosis reported in the Epidemiological Informative System of Communicable Diseases in Slovakia during the decade of 1999-2008. Long-term survey on Trichinella prevalence in wildlife of Slovakia.

In Slovakia, monitoring the prevalence of Trichinella spp. in wildlife was performed since 2000 in the main reservoir animals, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and wild boar (Sus scrofa), using artificial digestion method as recommended by International Commission on Trichinellosis. The results of investigation performed in 5270 red foxes showed that Trichinella infection is widespread across Slovakia and prevalence increased significantly from 4.9% in 2000 to 20.5% in 2007. Recently, a higher Trichinella prevalence (0.11%) in wild boars was also demonstrated. The results indicate that foxes and wi
