This work described a bioinspired soft robotic finger with variable bending length to conform objects with different sizes by means of selectively varying the structural stiffness of its segments. The basic design is a shape memory alloy-based soft actuator with embedded stiffness-varying structures serving as modifiable endoskeletons. The stiffness-varying structure is composed of shape memory polymer (SMP) embedded with Nichrome (Ni-Cr) wires as heating elements. Joule heating of SMP through Ni-Cr wire inducing its phase change from the glassy state to the rubbery state enables the actuator

Capturi ng hand motions for hand function evaluations is essential in the medical field. For many allied health professionals, measuring joint range of motion (ROM) is an important skill. While the universal goniometer (UG) is the most used clinical tool for measuring joint ROM, developments in current sensor technology are providing clinicians with more measurement possibilities than ever. For rehabilitation and manual dexterity evaluations, different data gloves have been developed. However, the reliability and validity of sensor technologies when used within a smart device remain somewhat u

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as osteoporosis, cartilage degeneration, and tendon injuries, are common worldwide and have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. These conditions are frequently associated with aging, trauma, or chronic diseases. They are typically characterized by slow and limited self-repair, particularly in tissues like cartilage and tendons, which exhibit low regenerative potential. Traditional treatment methods, such as implantable scaffolds, often face challenges related to incomplete tissue integration and inadequate adaptation to dynamic biomechanica

Diabetic wounds are difficult to treat clinically because they heal poorly, often leading to severe complications such as infections and amputations. Hydrogels with smart self-healing properties show great promise for treating diabetic wounds. These hydrogels are capable of continuously and dynamically responding to changes in the wound environment, feature improved mechanical qualities and the capacity to self-heal damage. We explore the latest developments in smart self-healing hydrogels for diabetic wound healing in this review. First, we systematically summarize the obstacles in treating d

Self-fitting scaffolds prepared from biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone)-diacrylate (PCL-DA) have been developed for the treatment of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) bone defects. As a thermoresponsive shape memory polymer (SMP), with the mere exposure to warm saline, these porous scaffolds achieve a conformal fit in defects. This behavior was expected to be advantageous to osseointegration and thus bone healing. Herein, for an initial assessment of their regenerative potential, a pilot in vivo study was performed using a rabbit calvarial defect model. Exogenous growth factors and cells were excluded

As biomaterials transition from static, inert objects into dynamic scaffolds that augment the healing process, the ability to design large-scale changes in architecture in response to environmental changes is increasingly valuable. To address this need, stimuli-responsive, or "smart," biomaterials are employed in clinical applications more frequently. These materials are capable of undergoing large and abrupt changes in shape in response to small changes in the environment, such as temperature, pH, mechanical forces, light, magnetic fields, or enzymes. Smart polymeric biomaterials include shap

Near-infrared (NIR)-triggered shape memory hydrogels with promising mechanical strength hold immense potential in the field of biomedical applications and soft actuators. However, the optical and mechanical properties of currently reported hydrogels usually suffer from limited solubility and dispersion of commonly used photothermal additives in hydrogels, thus restricting their practical implementations. Here,, a set of NIR-responsive shape memory hydrogels synthesized by polyaddition of diisocyanate-terminated poly(ethylene glycol), imidazolidinyl urea (IU), and p-benzoquinone dioxime (BQDO)

Stents have evolved significantly since their introduction to the medical field in the early 1980s, becoming widely used in percutaneous coronary interventions and following nephrological procedures. However, the current commercially available stents do not degrade and remain in the body forever, leading to problems like restenosis in cardiovascular applications or requiring removal procedures in ureteral applications. Efforts to replace metal with resorbable materials have largely been halted after the commercial failure of and safety concerns elicited by Abbott's Absorb stent in 2017. Indust

A scaffold design for tendon regeneration has been proposed, which mimics the microstructural features of tendons and provides appropriate mechanical properties. We synthesized a temperature-triggered shape-memory polymer (SMP) using the ring-opening polymerization of polycaprolactone (PCL) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a macroinitiator. We fabricated a micropatterned patch using SMP via capillary force lithography, which mimicked a native tendon, for providing physical cues and guiding effects. The SMP patches (the SMP-flat patch is referred to as SMP-F, and the SMP-patterned patch is ref

Small-scale soft-bodied machines that respond to externally applied magnetic field have attracted wide research interest because of their unique capabilities and promising potential in a variety of fields, especially for biomedical applications. When the size of such machines approach the sub-millimeter scale, their designs and functionalities are severely constrained by the available fabrication methods, which only work with limited materials, geometries, and magnetization profiles. To free such constraints, here, we propose a bottom-up assembly-based 3D microfabrication approach to create co

Smart responsive materials are capable of responding to external stimuli and, compared to traditional materials, can be effectively reused and reduce usage costs in applications. However, smart responsive materials often face challenges such as the inability to repair extensive damage, instability in long-term performance, and inapplicability in extreme environments. This study combines 2D diamond nanosheets with organic fluorinated molecules to prepare a smart nanofluid (fluorinated diamond nanosheets, F-DN) with self-healing and self-adhesion properties. This smart nanofluid can be used to d

Inspired by the mechanism of human facial expression, this paper designs and implements a bionic eye system driven by shape memory alloy (SMA) springs. To meet the requirements of multidirectional eye movement, a spherical joint actuation model based on antagonistic SMA spring arrangement is proposed. Four SMA springs are evenly spaced at 90° intervals around the spherical joint. By differentially contracting the opposing springs, precise upward, downward, leftward, and rightward eye rotations are achieved, and real-time force sensor feedback is used to construct a closed-loop PID controller.

BACKGROUND: In general, sufficient anchoring of screws in the bone material ensures the intended primary stability.
METHODS: Shape memory materials offer the option of using temperature-associated deformation energy in a targeted manner to compensate the special situation of osteoporotic bones or the potential lack of anchoring. An expansion screw was developed for these purposes. Using finite element analysis (FEA), the variability of screw configuration and actuator was assessed from shape memory. In particular, the dimensioning of the screw slot, the actuator length, and the actuator diame

Thermochromic smart windows are optical devices that can regulate their optical properties actively in response to external temperature changes. Due to their simple structures and as they do not require other additional energy supply devices, they have great potential in building energy-saving. However, conventional thermochromic smart windows generally have problems with high response temperatures and low response rates. Owing to their great effect in photothermal conversion, photothermal materials are often used in smart windows to assist phase transition so that they can quickly achieve the

Harmful side effects of the chemotherapeutic agent have been investigated in many recent studies. Since Fe2O3 nanoparticles have proper porosity, they are capable for loading noticeable amount of drugs and controlled release. We developed Fe2O3/chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposite. Quercetin (QC) nanoparticles, which have fewer side effects than chemical anti-tumor drugs, were encapsulated in the synthesized nanocarrier and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), vibrating sample mag

Growth factors (GFs) play a crucial role in directing stem cell behavior and transmitting information between different cell populations for tissue regeneration. However, their utility as therapeutics is limited by their short half-life within the physiological microenvironment and significant side effects caused by off-target effects or improper dosage. "Smart" materials that can not only sustain therapeutic delivery over a treatment period but also facilitate on-demand release upon activation are attracting significant interest in the field of GF delivery for tissue engineering.
