A New Species of Synbranchiella (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) from the Mountain Mullet ( Dajaus monticola) in Costa Rica.

A new species of the recently erected genus of proteocephalid cestodes, Synbranchiella Arredondo, Alves and Gil de Pertierra, 2017 , is described based on specimens found in the mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola (Bancroft, 1834), from Costa Rica. The new species is placed in Synbranchiella because of the cortical position of the genital organs (typical of the former subfamily Monticelliinae); a robust scolex (lacking a metascolex) having a dome-shaped apex and biloculate suckers (lacking free posterior margins); vitelline follicles in 2 narrow lateral bands; a vagina always anterior to the cir

The right response at the right time: Exploring helminth immune modulation in sticklebacks by experimental coinfection.

Parasites are one of the strongest selective agents in nature. They select for hosts that evolve counter-adaptive strategies to cope with infection. Helminth parasites are special because they can modulate their hosts' immune responses. This phenomenon is important in epidemiological contexts, where coinfections may be affected. How different types of hosts and helminths interact with each other is insufficiently investigated. We used the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) - Schistocephalus solidus model to study mechanisms and temporal components of helminth immune modulation.

Major host transitions are modulated through transcriptome-wide reprogramming events in Schistocephalus solidus, a threespine stickleback parasite.

Parasites with complex life cycles have developed numerous phenotypic strategies, closely associated with developmental events, to enable the exploitation of different ecological niches and facilitate transmission between hosts. How these environmental shifts are regulated from a metabolic and physiological standpoint, however, still remain to be fully elucidated. We examined the transcriptomic response of Schistocephalus solidus, a trophically transmitted parasite with a complex life cycle, over the course of its development in an intermediate host, the threespine stickleback, and the final a

Climate change alters the reproductive phenology and investment of a lacustrine fish, the three-spine stickleback.

High-latitude lakes are particularly sensitive to the effects of global climate change, demonstrating earlier ice breakup, longer ice-free seasons, and increased water temperatures. Such physical changes have implications for diverse life-history traits in taxa across entire lake food webs. Here, we use a five-decade time series from an Alaskan lake to explore effects of climate change on growth and reproduction of a widely distributed lacustrine fish, the three-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We used multivariate autoregressive state-space (MARSS) models to describe trends in the

Quantitative genetic analysis of brain size variation in sticklebacks: support for the mosaic model of brain evolution.

The mosaic model of brain evolution postulates that different brain regions are relatively free to evolve independently from each other. Such independent evolution is possible only if genetic correlations among the different brain regions are less than unity. We estimated heritabilities, evolvabilities and genetic correlations of relative size of the brain, and its different regions in the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We found that heritabilities were low (average h(2) = 0.24), suggesting a large plastic component to brain architecture. However, evolvabilities of differen

Short communication: Skin melatonin and cortisol responses to water acidification and basification within the optimal pH range in three-spined sticklebacks.

Fish skin functions not only as a passive protective barrier but also as an active site of key physiological processes, including a local stress response system. In fish, this system involves the hormones cortisol and melatonin (Mel), which contribute to counteracting environmental stressors and maintaining homeostasis. In this study, we examined the sensitivity of both components of the cutaneous stress response system (CSRS) in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) exposed to acidic (pH = 6.54) and basic (pH = 8.70) water conditions, representing the boundary values of the speci

Aquatic vegetation promotes prey diversity but not the diversification of predator phenotypes.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by arterial and/or venous thrombosis with antiphospholipid antibodies. Dysregulation of the complement pathway has been implicated in APS pathophysiology. We report the successful use of eculizumab, an anti-C5 monoclonal antibody, in controlling and preventing recurrent thrombosis in a refractory case of APS. An 18-year-old female was diagnosed with APS after developing extensive, unprovoked deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of axillary, inferior vena cava, and brachiocephalic veins. Thrombophilia evaluation revealed triple-positive lupus anticoagulant

The genomic architecture of local adaptation in two connected populations of three-spined stickleback.

Populations often adapt to their local environments despite the homogenizing effects of gene flow, but the genomic mechanisms enabling this process remain unclear. Theory predicts that adaptive divergence under high connectivity is favored when beneficial alleles cluster in regions of reduced recombination, a pattern that can be reinforced by structural variants (SVs). We investigated this in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from the St. Lawrence Estuary, where distinct freshwater and marine ecotypes meet and interbreed along a short ecological gradient. Using long- and short

Natural sex reversal imparts permanent compositional changes to the swamp eel gonadal microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Microbial communities are increasingly recognized for their essential roles in the reproductive system. However, the microbial communities in healthy gonads-neither in the ovary nor the testis-have not been extensively explored, particularly with respect to sex differentiation. Sex reversal is a unique mode of sex differentiation that is a well-documented phenomenon in various animal species, with the swamp eel (Monopterus albus) being a notable example of a hermaphroditic species that undergoes natural female-to-male sex reversal. Thus, swamp eel offers a robust system for explori

Viral Nervous Necrosis due to Betanodavirus: A Case Study in Pot-Bellied Seahorses (Hippocampus abdominals).

Betanodaviruses, members of the Nodaviridae family, are the causative agents of viral nervous necrosis in fish, resulting in great economic losses worldwide. This is the first case study describing the detection and confirmation of viral nervous necrosis in pot-bellied seahorses (Hippocampus abdominalis) in Australia. Clinical signs of this infection in the seahorses included whirling, floating and cessation of feeding. Histopathological findings included prominent vacuolation in the grey matter of the brain and in the retina of the eye. Betanodavirus infection was initially detected by betano

Co-profiling of single-cell gene expression and chromatin landscapes in stickleback pituitary.

The pituitary gland is a key endocrine gland with various physiological functions including metabolism, growth, and reproduction. It comprises several distinct cell populations that release multiple polypeptide hormones. Although the major endocrine cell types are conserved across taxa, the regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and chromatin organization in specific cell types remain poorly understood. Here, we performed simultaneous profiling of the transcriptome and chromatin landscapes in the pituitary cells of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), which represents a goo

How cunning is the puppet-master? Cestode-infected fish appear generally fearless.

Trophically transmitted parasites have life cycles that require the infected host to be eaten by the correct type of predator. Such parasites should benefit from an ability to suppress the host's fear of predators, but if the manipulation is imprecise the consequence may be increased predation by non-hosts, to the detriment of the parasite. Three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) infected by the cestode Schistocephalus solidus express reduced antipredator behaviours, but it is unknown whether this is an example of a highly precise manipulation, a more general manipulation, or if it

Testing the parasite mass burden effect on alteration of host behaviour in the Schistocephalus-stickleback system.

Many parasites with complex life cycles modify the behaviour of their intermediate host, which has been proposed to increase transmission to their definitive host. This behavioural change could result from the parasite actively manipulating its host, but could also be explained by a mechanical effect, where the physical presence of the parasite affects host behaviour. We created an artificial internal parasite using silicone injections in the body cavity to test this mechanical effect hypothesis. We used the Schistocephalus solidus and threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) system, as

Effects of environmental variation on host-parasite interaction in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus).

Recent research provides accumulating evidence that the evolutionary dynamics of host-parasite adaptations strongly depend on environmental variation. In this context, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) has become an important research model since it is distributed all over the northern hemisphere and lives in very different habitat types, ranging from marine to freshwater, were it is exposed to a huge diversity of parasites. While a majority of studies start from explorations of sticklebacks in the wild, only relatively few investigations have continued under laboratory con

Effects of fish species composition on Diphyllobothrium spp. infections in brown trout - is three-spined stickleback a key species?

Subarctic populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) are often heavily infected with cestodes of the genus Diphyllobothrium, assumedly because of their piscivorous behaviour. This study explores possible associations between availability of fish prey and Diphyllobothrium spp. infections in lacustrine trout populations. Trout in (i) allopatry (group T); (ii) sympatry with Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) (group TC); and (iii) sympatry with charr and three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) (group TCS) were contrasted. Mean abundance and intensity of Diphyllobothrium spp. were higher in

Phenotypic plasticity in haptoral structures of Ligophorus cephali (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) on the flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus): a geometric morphometric approach.

Evaluating phenotypic plasticity in attachment organs of parasites can provide information on the capacity to colonise new hosts and illuminate evolutionary processes driving host specificity. We analysed the variability in shape and size of the dorsal and ventral anchors of Ligophorus cephali from Mugil cephalus by means of geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistics. We also assessed the morphological integration between anchors and between the roots and points in order to gain insight into their functional morphology. Dorsal and ventral anchors showed a similar gradient of overall s

Making the in vitro breeding of Schistocephalus solidus more flexible.

Schistocephalus solidus is one of the few cestodes that can be bred in vitro. Worms have typically been bred in pairs, so the parents of each offspring can clearly be assigned. From a genetic perspective, it would be useful to be able to mate an individual worm to multiple partners while still being able to distinguish among different parents. As each adult S. solidus possesses numerous reproductive complexes, cutting worms and breeding the pieces separately would facilitate such breeding designs. We halved worms before in vitro breeding and evaluated whether this affected outcrossing rates an

Morphological aspects and histological effects of the attachment organ of Parabrachiella sp. (Copepoda: Lernaeopodidae) on the grey mullet, Mugil liza Valenciennes.

The genus Parabrachiella Wilson, 1915 (Lernaeopodidae) is represented by copepods that are highly adapted to a parasitic way of life. In Argentina, only P. insidiosa var. lageniformis Heller, 1865, P. chevreuxii Van Beneden, 1891 and P. spinicephala Ringuelet, 1945 have been cited, but none of these have been reported on mugilids. Recently, other species of this genus were found attached to the nasal cavities of juvenile grey mullets, Mugil liza Valenciennes, from Samborombón bay, Buenos Aires province. In this study, the prevalence and mean intensity of the Parabrachiella sp. on grey mullet i

A new Alloopistholecithum species (Digenea: Lecithasteridae) parasitizing the economically valuable Odontesthes bonariensis (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae).

The genus Alloophistolecithum was recently created and comprises species that were previously included in the genus Lecithaster. The two genera form the subfamily Lecithasterinae. The genera includes species that predominantly parasitize marine fish, and occasionally those inhabiting fresh or brackish water. This study describes a new species of Alloophistolecithum, which is a parasite of the Argentinian silverside (Odontesthes bonariensis), a fish species that inhabits brackish waters. The impact of diver-induced stress on the ventilation patterns of Mediterranean seahorses: A field-based approach.

Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) are among the most popular marine species for wildlife tourism, being highly sought by divers and underwater photographers. Due to their unique morphology and behaviour, seahorses are particularly vulnerable to the visual and acoustic disturbances caused by underwater photographers, who often use flash photography to compensate for the seahorses' cryptic appearance. The present study utilises Opercular Beat Rate (OBR) as a non-invasive method to evaluate the stress induced by underwater tourism activities on Mediterranean seahorses, specifically the long-snouted Hi
