Bladder cancer patient and provider perspectives on smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the most common risk factor for bladder cancer and is associated with adverse clinical and cancer-related outcomes. Increasing understanding of the patient and provider perspectives on smoking cessation may provide insight into improving smoking cessation rates among bladder cancer survivors. We sought to inform strategies for providers promoting cessation efforts and help patients quit smoking. METHODS: Using a modified Delphi process with multidisciplinary input from bladder cancer providers, researchers, and a patient advocate, 2 surveys were created for bladder canc

A Just-In-Time Adaptive intervention (JITAI) for smoking cessation: Feasibility and acceptability findings.

Smoking cessation treatments that are easily accessible and deliver intervention content at vulnerable moments (e.g., high negative affect) have great potential to impact tobacco abstinence. The current study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a multi-component Just-In-Time Adaptive Intervention (JITAI) for smoking cessation. Daily smokers interested in quitting were consented to participate in a 6-week cessation study. Visit 1 occurred 4 days pre-quit, Visit 2 was on the quit day, Visit 3 occurred 3 days post-quit, Visit 4 was 10 days post-quit, and Visit 5 was 28 days post-quit. D

Leveling the Playing Field: Mailing Pharmacotherapy to Medicaid Members Who Smoke.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking rates differ by insurance type; rates are often double for Medicaid and uninsured compared with that for Medicare or privately insured. State-funded tobacco quitlines' provision of free nicotine replacement therapy varies. In some states, Medicaid beneficiaries must obtain nicotine replacement therapy from a physician, whereas others get nicotine replacement therapy mailed to them. METHODS: This secondary analysis examined the differences in the source and use of cessation treatment by insurance type and their impacts on cessation. The parent trial excluded people who we

Treatment of tobacco dependence.

BACKGROUND: 110 000 to 140 000 people die in Germany each year of tobacco-related diseases. Thus, measures should be taken to lower the number of persons who start smoking, encourage smokers to stop, and keep those who have stopped from starting again, in order to achieve a sustained benefit in public health. METHOD: We present recommendations for the diagnostic evaluation, counseling, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy of smokers, derived from the findings of current Cochrane meta-analyses and from the pertinent German-language and American guidelines. RESULTS: Motivational interviewing by

Conventional and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have different smoking characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are marketed as tobacco-free nicotine delivery devices that have received little laboratory evaluation. In this study, the smoking properties of conventional and e-cigarettes were compared by examining the vacuum required to produce smoke (conventional cigarettes) or aerosol (e-cigarettes) and the density of the smoke/aerosol over time. METHODS: Vacuum was measured using a manometer coupled to a smoking machine. The density of aerosol or smoke was measured spectrophotometrically. E-cigarettes were subjected to smoke-out experiments in which

Electronic cigarettes: a task force report from the European Respiratory Society.

There is a marked increase in the development and use of electronic nicotine delivery systems or electronic cigarettes (ECIGs). This statement covers electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), defined as "electrical devices that generate an aerosol from a liquid" and thus excludes devices that contain tobacco. Database searches identified published articles that were used to summarise the current knowledge on the epidemiology of ECIG use; their ingredients and accompanied health effects; second-hand exposure; use of ECIGs for smoking cessation; behavioural aspects of ECIGs and social impact; in vitro and

Adequacy of nicotine replacement and success quitting tobacco in clinical populations: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for smoking cessation is an effective intervention that reduces urges to smoke by substituting a safer source of nicotine. NRT dosing is imprecise, however, and there is some evidence that patients and providers are reluctant to use the larger doses that may be appropriate for some people who smoke. In this analysis, we assess the relationship between cigarettes smoked and NRT prescribed, and between adequacy of nicotine replacement and cessation success. METHODS: We analyzed data from 84,667 patients and 492 clinics participating in a province-w

The effect of a smoking cessation program for patients in cancer treatment: a quasi-experimental intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Compared to non-smokers, smokers have reduced effects of cancer treatment, and increased risk of treatment-related toxicity. Quitting smoking can improve treatment effects and reduce side effects. This study reports on the potential impact of a smoking cessation program on smoking cessation rates among patients in cancer treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cancer patients 18 years and older who smoked, with survival prognosis ≥12 months, not suffering dementia or other mental illness, and who were referred to cancer treatment at six Norwegian hospitals were invited to participate. Nanomicelles-in-coaxial nanofibers with exit channels as a transdermal delivery platform for smoking cessation.

Smoking is a life-threatening habit; that is why many nicotine-replacement therapies (NRTs), which include chewing gums, nicotine patches, lozenges, mouth sprays, inhalers and nasal sprays that are usually administered for 8-12 weeks, have been reported for smoking cessation. We report the fabrication of patches comprising nanomicelles-in-coaxial nanofibers (NFs) for the transdermal delivery of varenicline (VAR) tartrate, a partial agonist of the α4β2 receptor subtype, for smoking cessation. The cores of the fabricated coaxial NF structures are composed of polyethylene oxide, VAR-loaded Pluron

"I'm both smoking and vaping": a longitudinal qualitative study of US young adults who tried to quit smoking cigarettes by using electronic cigarettes.

OBJECTIVE: To describe how young adults use electronic cigarettes (electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)) for smoking cessation and reasons why they may or may not successfully quit smoking. METHODS: Longitudinal qualitative data were collected annually from 2017 to 2019 for 25 young adult tobacco users (aged 18-29 years) in California (USA) who used ENDS to quit/reduce smoking. Thematic and trajectory analyses were used to identify key within-person and between-person changes in tobacco/nicotine use over time. RESULTS: Five types of tobacco use transition were identified among baselin

Development of an effective simulation model for evaluating smoke leakage during laparoscopic surgery.

The leakage of surgical gas and smoke from the peritoneum during laparoscopy may release noxious aerosols, including potential carcinogens, viruses and other contaminants, into the operating theatre, especially into the breathing zone of the surgical team. Reliable and realistic models and methods that develop and detect surgical smoke in simulated settings are necessary to effectively test devices and strategies intended to reduce such leaks. Here, we report a novel high-fidelity laparoscopic smoke model with innovative imaging methods applicable to the theatre setting, followed by an assessm

Maintaining abstinence from smoking after a period of enforced abstinence - systematic review, meta-analysis and analysis of behaviour change techniques with a focus on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Smoking prevalence is doubled among people with mental health problems and reaches 80% in inpatient, substance misuse and prison settings, widening inequalities in morbidity and mortality. As more institutions become smoke-free but most smokers relapse immediately post-discharge, we aimed to review interventions to maintain abstinence post-discharge. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched from inception to May 2016 and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies conducted with adult smokers in prison, inpatient mental health or subst

Differential effects of cigarette smoking on cardiovascular disease in females: A narrative review and call to action.

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking continues to be a major driver in the incidence and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). As females become an increasingly larger fraction of those who smoke it is imperative that the sex-specific effects of smoking be further explored and acted upon. METHODS: This narrative review describes current evidence on the differential effects of smoking on CVD in females and the need to improve treatment. RESULTS: Evidence to date suggests that smoking has disproportionately negative effects on the cardiovascular (CV) system in females, especially in those who a

Financial incentives for quitting smoking in pregnancy: Are they cost-effective?

AIMS: To evaluate whether adding financial incentives to usual care is cost-effective in encouraging pregnant women to quit tobacco smoking, compared with usual care alone. DESIGN: Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) and cost-utility analysis (CUA) from a health-care provider's perspective, embedded in the Smoking Cessation in Pregnancy Incentives Trial (CPIT III). Long-term analyses were conducted from the same perspective, using an existing Markov model over a life-time horizon. SETTING: Seven maternity smoking cessation sites in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom.

Strategies to improve smoking cessation rates in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is an important setting in which to treat tobacco addiction. However, the rates at which providers address smoking cessation and the success of that support vary. Strategies can be implemented to improve and increase the delivery of smoking cessation support (e.g. through provider training), and to increase the amount and breadth of support given to people who smoke (e.g. through additional counseling or tailored printed materials). OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of strategies intended to increase the success of smoking cessation interventions in primary care

Acceptability of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) among HIV positive smokers.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have the potential to help smokers living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) to reduce harms from tobacco use. However, little is known about ENDS use among PLWHA. This study's aim was to evaluate the acceptability of two types of ENDS among PLWHA not planning to quit smoking. The study utilized a cross-over design where participants used two ENDS in a random order as smoking substitutes during two use periods separated by 7 days. Exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) was analyzed and participants reported daily cigarette and ENDS use and completed ratings on ENDS accepta

Development of a targeted behavioral treatment for smoking cessation among individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Smoking cessation for individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is medically critical, but smoking for coping motives is a common barrier. METHOD: In this evaluation of three treatment components (Mindfulness, Practice Quitting, and Countering Emotional Behaviors), we conducted two studies guided by the ORBIT model. Study 1 was a single-case design experiment (N = 18); Study 2 was a pilot feasibility study (N = 30). In both studies, participants were randomized to receive one of the three treatment modules.
