Evaluation of a counseling method for the prevention of child exposure to tobacco smoke: an example of client-centered communication.

BACKGROUND: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is an important risk factor. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of the counseling method "Smoke-free children" that focuses on protection of infants. METHODS: The counseling method, "Smoke-free children", has been developed and implemented at Swedish child health centers. The counseling method's point of departure is based upon a client-centered approach. Saliva cotinine samples from the mothers were collected when the child was 1-4 weeks and 3 months of age. Interviews regarding mothers' smoking habits and self-reported maternal smoking

Cataractous changes in rat lens following cigarette smoke exposure is prevented by parenteral deferoxamine therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To test whether iron accumulation in the lens following cigarette smoke exposure is the principal mechanism in smoke-related cataractogenesis and to assess the possible protective effect of deferoxamine mesylate treatment against lenticular degeneration with in vivo exposure to cigarette smoke. METHODS: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups. Groups 3 and 4 rats were exposed to cigarette smoke for 1 hour each day for 90 consecutive days, and groups 1 and 2 rats were treated in a similar manner but exposed only to room air. In addition, deferoxamine w

A Preliminary Investigation of a Relapse Prevention Mobile Application to Maintain Smoking Abstinence Among Individuals With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Smokers with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have increased difficulty achieving and maintaining abstinence. Contingency management approaches to smoking cessation interventions have demonstrated short-term efficacy but are limited by high rates of relapse. The goal of this pilot study was to evaluate the usability and feasibility of a smartphone-based smoking cessation application (Stay Quit Coach) designed to prevent relapse among individuals with PTSD. METHODS: Smokers (N = 11) were randomized to (1) QUIT4EVER, an intervention combining mobile contingency management smokin

Alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, and the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus: epidemiology, clinical findings, and prevention.

Both cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking are well-established risk factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and the relationship of dose to cancer risk has already been described. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of these two factors has been reported. Our case-control study revealed the odds ratio of ESCC to be 50.1 for those who were both heavy smokers and heavy drinkers in comparison to people who neither drank nor smoked. In patients with ESCC, head and neck cancers as well as dysplastic lesions are frequently observed. Heavy smoking and heavy drinking are closely relat

Biologic damage resulting from exposure to tobacco smoke and from radon: implication for preventive interventions.

Cigarette smoking and residential radon are, respectively, the first and second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Of the approximately 157 000 lung deaths occurring in 2000, approximately 90% can be attributed to cigarette smoking and 30% of the lung cancer deaths among non-smokers can be attributed to residential radon exposure. Although dwarfed by cigarette related lung cancer, lung cancer among lifetime non-smokers is a leading cause of death in the United States, and many other countries, accounting for approximately 16 000 deaths per year in the US. Laboratory studi

A proof of concept randomised placebo controlled factorial trial to examine the efficacy of St John's wort for smoking cessation and chromium to prevent weight gain on smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: St John's wort is an effective antidepressant that can reduce tobacco withdrawal symptoms, but it is not known whether it assists cessation. Chromium assists weight loss and might limit post cessation weight gain. METHODS: In a factorial design, we randomised smokers stopping smoking to 900 mg St John's wort (SJW) active or placebo and also randomised them to 400 microm chromium or placebo daily. Treatment started 2 weeks prior to quit day and continued for 14 weeks. Participants and researchers were blind to treatment allocation. All participants received weekly behavioural suppo

Multilevel geographic determinants of smoking and smokeless tobacco use among young men in India: evidence for targeted addiction prevention policies.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use among youth in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly India, remains a critical public health challenge. However, limited research has examined how different geographic determinants distinctly contribute to smoked and smokeless tobacco use among young men in India. METHODS: This study utilized data of 31,070 young men aged 15-24 years (urban = 7784, rural = 23,286) from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019-21). Four-level random intercept logistic regression models (individual, community, district, state) were employed separately for smoked t

The Cost-Effectiveness of Smoking Cessation Programs for Prevention of Wound Complications Following Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Break-Even Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use significantly increases the rate of wound complications in patients undergoing total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). Preoperative optimization through smoking cessation programs significantly minimizes the rate of infection and improves wound healing in arthroplasty procedures. Despite its utility, minimal research has examined the cost-effectiveness of preoperative smoking cessation programs to reduce the need for extracapsular irrigation and debridement (I&D) due to wound complications following TAA. METHODS: The cost of an I&D procedure was obtained from our institution's

Cigarette Smoking, Coronary Plaque Burden and Phenotype: A Multimodality Meta-Analysis and Implications for Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring in Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Despite the widespread use of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring as a risk stratifier for preventive therapy, smokers frequently present with acute coronary syndromes despite minimal coronary calcification. We performed a multimodality meta-analysis to quantify the association between smoking and coronary plaque burden and phenotype using CCTA, IVUS, and OCT. METHODS AND RESULTS: We systematically searched multiple databases through June 2026 for imaging studies comparing smokers with never-smokers.

Dietary lycopene attenuates cigarette smoke-promoted nonalcoholic steatohepatitis by preventing suppression of antioxidant enzymes in ferrets.

Cigarette smoke (CS) is an independent risk factor in development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis. Lycopene, a carotenoid naturally occurring in tomatoes, has been shown to be a protective agent against tobacco carcinogen 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK)-induced NASH. In the present study using a ferret model we investigated whether CS promotes NASH and whether dietary lycopene can inhibit CS-promoted NASH development, and if so, what potential mechanisms were involved. Ferrets were divided into 4 groups (n=12-16/group): control, NNK/CS exposed, NNK/CS p

Cigarette smoke-induced disruption of bronchial epithelial tight junctions is prevented by transforming growth factor-β.

The airway epithelium constitutes an essential immunological and cytoprotective barrier to inhaled insults, such as cigarette smoke, environmental particles, or viruses. Although bronchial epithelial integrity is crucial for airway homeostasis, defective epithelial barrier function contributes to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Tight junctions at the apical side of epithelial cell-cell contacts determine epithelial permeability. Cigarette smoke exposure, the major risk factor for COPD, is suggested to impair tight junction integrity; however, detailed mechanisms thereof remain el

Knowledge, attitudes and preventive efforts of Malaysian medical students regarding exposure to environmental tobacco and cigarette smoking.

A longitudinal study was conducted to determine changes in knowledge, attitudes and preventive efforts of Malaysian medical students concerning cigarette smoking and environmental exposure to tobacco smoke from their first pre-clinical year in medical school until their final clinical year. There were significant improvements in knowledge about cigarette smoking and in knowledge, attitudes and efforts concerning environmental exposure to tobacco smoke. Overall attitudes concerning cigarette smoking did not change over this period. The same pattern was found for male non-smokers. Women improved

A meta-review of "lifestyle psychiatry": the role of exercise, smoking, diet and sleep in the prevention and treatment of mental disorders.

There is increasing academic and clinical interest in how "lifestyle factors" traditionally associated with physical health may also relate to mental health and psychological well-being. In response, international and national health bodies are producing guidelines to address health behaviors in the prevention and treatment of mental illness. However, the current evidence for the causal role of lifestyle factors in the onset and prognosis of mental disorders is unclear. We performed a systematic meta-review of the top-tier evidence examining how physical activity, sleep, dietary patterns and t

Boosting the IL-22 response using flagellin prevents bacterial infection in cigarette smoke-exposed mice.

The progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung inflammatory disease being the fourth cause of death worldwide, is marked by acute exacerbations. These episodes are mainly caused by bacterial infections, frequently due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. This susceptibility to infection involves a defect in interleukin (IL)-22, which plays a pivotal role in mucosal defense mechanism. Administration of flagellin, a Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR-5) agonist, can protect mice and primates against respiratory infections in a non-pathological background. We hypothesized that TLR-5-media
