Mushrooms as Sustainable Protein Alternatives: Nutritional-Functional Characterization and Innovative Applications in Meat Analogs, Functional Snacks, and Beverages.

Global demand for sustainable protein has intensified amid environmental, public health, and ethical concerns surrounding conventional animal agriculture. Edible mushrooms have emerged as promising next-generation protein sources, delivering 19-35% protein (dry weight) with complete essential amino acid profiles and digestibility rates of 60-80%. Beyond protein, mushrooms provide bioactive compounds, including β-glucans, ergothioneine, phenolic acids, and vitamin D2, supporting immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory functions. Enzymatically derived bioactive peptides further demo

Effects of exercise snacks on physical and mental health among sedentary students: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

UNLABELLED: Sedentary behavior is highly prevalent among university students and is associated with adverse cardiometabolic, inflammatory, and psychological outcomes. Exercise snacks (ES), generally conceptualized as brief, structured bouts of physical activity distributed across the day, have emerged as a time-efficient strategy for improving health, but evidence in sedentary university students remains limited. This study is the initial phase of a multiphase randomised controlled trial program and aims to evaluate the effects of a structured, campus-based stair climbing ES intervention on th

Efficacy of Iron-Rich Snacks in Improving Iron Status Among Adolescent Girls (10‒19 Years): A Systematic Review.

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common form of anaemia and the leading cause of years lived with disabilities (YLD) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) among adolescents. Recently, various iron-rich snacks have been developed as interventions to improve iron status among adolescents. This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of natural, non-commercially fortified iron-rich snacks in improving iron status among adolescent girls aged 10-19 years. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials and quasi-experiments was conducted, focusing on iron status indicators including

Fortification of Carica papaya fruit seeds to school meal snacks may aid Africa mass deworming programs: a preliminary survey.

BACKGROUND: Soil transmitted helminths (STHs) are among the world's neglected tropical diseases. Morbidity due to STHs is greatest in school-age children who typically have the highest burden of infection. In 2001, WHO passed a resolution for the use of large-scale mass drug administration (MDA) to deworm vulnerable children through school based programs. Though effective, there is concern that MDA might not be sustainable over extended periods. Additionally the current MDA strategy does not consider child malnutrition, a very common malady in resource limited countries. We report a pilot eval

The global obesity epidemic: snacking and obesity may start with free meals during infant feeding.

UNLABELLED: Feeding is vital for survival. The brain has strong hunger and reward mechanisms that ensure optimal food intake for adequate nutrition. The drive for feeding is particularly strong in humans whose large brains require large energy support. This starts immediately after birth; the newborn child being able to taste sucrose and suck the sweet and fat from its mother's milk. At present, mothers are generally advised to breastfeed children as often as they like, which may be up to 15 times a day. At the same time, childhood obesity is rapidly developing. One reason for the rapidly incr

Preliminary evaluation of an adapted snack delay task for measuring inhibition in young children with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) often experience challenges in executive functioning (EF), including inhibitory control. Despite interest in EF research and intervention in DS, there is a lack of feasible and developmentally sensitive measures of EF for young children in this population. This study evaluated the feasibility, developmental sensitivity, and test-retest reliability of a modified Snack Delay task for children with DS aged 2-7 years. METHODS: The Snack Delay task was administered to 118 participants with DS (mean age = 5.21, SD = 1.53; 51.7% male). Three outcome me

Allergic Reaction to a Commercially Available Insect Snack Caused by House Cricket (Acheta domesticus) Tropomyosin.

SCOPE: Edible insects contain allergens with potential cross-reactivity to other invertebrates. Here, this study examines IgE-reactive proteins in a house cricket snack (Acheta domesticus) leading to an allergic reaction in a 27-year old man followed by a similar reaction days later after eating shrimps. METHODS AND RESULTS: Prick to prick tests verify the IgE-mediated allergy to crickets and skin prick testing confirms a type I sensitization to house dust mite without any clinical relevance for the patient, and to shrimp extracts, but is negative for several other foods. Serological testing
