Effect of skull morphology on fox snow diving.

Certain fox species plunge-dive into snow to catch prey (e.g., rodents), a hunting mechanism called mousing. Red and arctic foxes can dive into snow at speeds ranging between 2 and 4 m/s. Such mousing behavior is facilitated by a slim, narrow facial structure. Here, we investigate how foxes dive into snow efficiently by studying the role of skull morphology on impact forces it experiences. In this study, we reproduce the mousing behavior in the lab using three-dimensional (3D) printed fox skulls dropped into fresh snow to quantify the dynamic force of impact. Impact force into snow is modeled

Bioenergetics of iron snow fueling life on Europa.

The main sources of redox gradients supporting high-productivity life in the Europan and other icy ocean world oceans were proposed to be photolytically derived oxidants, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the icy shell, and reductants (Fe(II), S(-II), CH4, H2) from bottom waters reacting with a (ultra)mafic seafloor. Important roadblocks to maintaining life, however, are that the degree of ocean mixing to combine redox species is unknown, and ROS damage biomolecules. Here, we envisage a unique solution using an acid mine drainage (AMD)-filled pit lakes analog system for the Europan oc

Structural and functional footprint of visual snow syndrome.

Patients with visual snow syndrome suffer from a continuous pan-field visual disturbance, additional visual symptoms, tinnitus, and non-perceptional symptoms. The pathophysiology of visual symptoms might involve dysfunctional visual cortex. So far, the extra-visual system has not been investigated. We aimed at identifying structural and functional correlates for visual and non-visual symptoms in visual snow syndrome. Patients were compared to age- and sex-matched controls using 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose PET (n = 20 per group) and voxel-based morphometry (n = 17 per group). Guided by the P

Spatial Variability of Antarctic Surface Snow Bacterial Communities.

It was once a long-held view that the Antarctic was a pristine environment with low biomass, low biodiversity and low rates of microbial activity. However, as the intensity of scientific investigation has increased, so these views have started to change. In particular, the role and impact of human activity toward indigenous microbial communities has started to come under more intense scrutiny. During the Subglacial Lake Ellsworth exploration campaign in December 2012, a microbiological survey was conducted to determine the extent and likelihood of exogenous input into the subglacial lake syste

John Snow and the First Second-Gas Effect.

In 1847, British anesthesia pioneer John Snow (1813-1858) observed that patients did not manifest cyanosis during induction with hypoxic mixtures of ether vapor in air. He hypothesized a molecular mechanism that would be understood over a century later as the second gas effect.

Unilateral snow banking in tuberculosis-related intermediate uveitis.

Snow banking is usually a term coined to describe the accumulation of vitreous exudates over the pars plana and the peripheral retina in pars planitis. Snow banking is very rare in tubercular intermediate uveitis. A 32-year-old male was diagnosed to have intermediate uveitis due to tubercular etiology in the right eye. Laboratory investigations include an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, positive Mantoux test, and computed tomography thorax showing mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Transbronchial needle aspiration of the lymph nodes showed chronic granulomatous inflammation with caseation.

Stifle osteochondritis dissecans in snow leopards (Uncia uncia).

Three snow leopard (Uncia uncia) cubs, female and male siblings and an unrelated female, had lameness attributed to osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions noted at 6, 8, and 10 mo of age, respectively. All cubs were diagnosed with OCD via radiographs. The sibling cubs both had lesions of the right lateral femoral condyles, while the unrelated cub had bilateral lesions of the lateral femoral condyles. Subsequently, OCD was confirmed in all three cases during surgical correction of the lateral femoral condyle lesions via lateral stifle arthrotomies, flap removal, and debridement of the defect s

John Snow: The Pioneer of Modern Epidemiology and Anesthesia.

John Snow (15 March 1813-16 June 1858) stands as a seminal figure in the fields of epidemiology and anesthesia. His groundbreaking work in tracing the source of cholera outbreaks and advancing the practice of anesthesia has left an indelible mark on modern medicine. Born in York, England, Snow's early passion for science and dedication to medical practice led him to become a pioneering force in his field. His meticulous methods, including the innovative use of spatial analysis and statistical mapping, challenged prevailing theories and laid the groundwork for modern public health initiatives.

Visual snow: A systematic review and a case series.

BACKGROUND: Visual Snow Syndrome is a recently recognized neurological condition presenting, continuous, tiny dots across the entire visual field, accompanied by nyctalopia, photophobia and palinopsia that persist for months. It may be part of migraine aura spectrum, yet its definition is still questionable. Diagnostic criteria for Visual Snow Syndrome are included in the supplemental material of ICHD-3. We aimed to summarize recent data to improve the understanding of Visual Snow Syndrome. METHODS: After presenting four new cases, we conducted a PRISMA systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE and

Prevalence of visual snow and relation to attentional absorption.

Visual snow is a condition of unclear prevalence characterized by tiny flickering dots throughout the entire visual field. It appears to result from visual cortex hyperactivity and possibly correlates with propensity to be engrossed in sensory and imaginary experiences (absorption). The prevalence and correlates of visual snow, and emotional reactions to it, were explored in the general Portuguese population with three studies with online surveys. In Study 1, 564 participants were shown an animated graphic simulation of visual snow and asked to rate how frequently they have similar percepts on

Memorials to John Snow - Pioneer in anaesthesia and epidemiology.

John Snow was an English physician and a founding father of epidemiology, whose name is inextricably linked with tracing the source of the 1854 cholera outbreak in Soho, which killed over 600 people. Despite his recommendation to remove the water pump handle and thus reduce the spread of cholera, his theory of faecal-oral transmission was not widely believed until after his death. Furthermore, he also pioneered substantial achievements in the development of anaesthesia. He studied both chloroform and ether, improving the accuracy of their delivery. In his obstetric practice, he achieved the fe

Visual snow: A thalamocortical dysrhythmia of the visual pathway?

In this paper we review the visual snow (VS) characteristics of a case cohort of 32 patients. History of symptoms and associated co-morbidities, ophthalmic examination, previous investigations and the results of intuitive colourimetry were collected and reviewed. VS symptoms follow a stereotypical description and are strongly associated with palinopsia, migraine and tinnitus, but also tremor. The condition is a chronic one and often results in misdiagnosis with psychiatric disorders or malingering. Colour filters, particularly in the yellow-blue colour spectrum, subjectively reduced symptoms o

Role of nitrite in the photochemical formation of radicals in the snow.

Photochemical reactions in snow can have an important impact on the composition of the atmosphere over snow-covered areas as well as on the composition of the snow itself. One of the major photochemical processes is the photolysis of nitrate leading to the formation of volatile nitrogen compounds. We report nitrite concentrations determined together with nitrate and hydrogen peroxide in surface snow collected at the coastal site of Barrow, Alaska. The results demonstrate that nitrite likely plays a significant role as a precursor for reactive hydroxyl radicals as well as volatile nitrogen oxid

John Snow's legacy: epidemiology without borders.

This Review provides abstracts from a meeting held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, on April 11-12, 2013, to celebrate the legacy of John Snow. They describe conventional and unconventional applications of epidemiological methods to problems ranging from diarrhoeal disease, mental health, cancer, and accident care, to education, poverty, financial networks, crime, and violence. Common themes appear throughout, including recognition of the importance of Snow's example, the philosophical and practical implications of assessment of causality, and an emphasis on the evaluatio

Characterization of the Snow Mountain agent of viral gastroenteritis.

Snow Mountain agent (SMA) is a 27- to 32-nm virus which is the etiologic agent of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in Colorado and Vermont. SMA is morphologically similar to but antigenically distinct from the Norwalk and Hawaii agents of viral gastroenteritis but, like those agents, has not been cultivated in vitro. We purified and characterized SMA directly from human stool specimens containing the virus. The density of the SMA virion was 1.29 g/cm3 and 1.21 to 1.22 g/cm3 on potassium tartrate-glycerol gradients and 1.33 to 1.34 g/cm3 on cesium chloride gradients. SMA had an S value of 170

Clinical reading-related oculomotor assessment in visual snow syndrome.

PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a complex neurological condition presenting with an array of sensory, motor, and perceptual dysfunctions and related visual and non-visual symptoms. Recent laboratory studies have found subtle, basic, saccadic-based abnormalities in this population. The objective of the present investigation was to determine if saccadic-related problems could be confirmed and extended using three common clinical reading-related eye movement tests having well-developed protocols and normative databases. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 32 patients (ages 16-56
