Snowboarding is now a well-established winter sport and a popular mode of mountaineering. In-area and backcountry snowboarding are defined, as well as a new term, glisse, that refers to all types of skis and snowboards. New developments in equipment focus on boot and binding systems. Backcountry travel is highlighted, including ascent with snowshoes, skis, a splitboard, and crampons. Injuries are about 4-6 per 1000 snowboarding days. Upper extremity injuries are most often wrist sprains or fractures. Lower extremity injuries are primarily ankle sprains and are generally less severe than knee i

This study establishes that the human lower extremity-ski system has a fundamental frequency of approximately 1 Hz. The fundamental mode dominates the system response when loading times are short compared to the first natural frequency. Consequently, the use of a single degree of freedom approximation and the use of impulse criteria can provide important insights into the problem of skiing injuries. Specifically, the sport of snow skiing develops forces with frequency content in the static, transition, and impulse regions of the leg-ski response spectrum. Therefore, ski release bindings must b

The incidence of paediatric fractures among winter sport athletes is not adequately studied. Our objective was to categorize fractures that occurred in paediatric skiers and snowboarders at a single ski resort. X-rays of 756 skiers/snowboarders aged 3-17 diagnosed with a fracture were categorized using the Salter-Harris (SH) classification. SH fractures were seen in 158 (21%) patients, with 123 (77%) being Type II. There were no significant differences between patients with a SH fracture and patients with a non-SH fracture for age, sex, snowboarding or skiing, mechanism of injury, terrain or t

Details of serious injuries to children ≤16 yrs. of age that necessitated urgent surgical intervention by the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland were recorded into a database registry. Some 15 110 entries listed the precise time of injury, and 3114 (20.6%) of these resulted from participating in sport-associated activities. Time-of-day, day-of-week and month-of-year differences in the total number of children's accidental sport injuries (CASI) were validated. Time-of-day patterns were substantiated for "All Sports", for both boys and girls 5-16

Different results have been reported for skiing and snowboarding injuries worldwide. Few studies consider the injury severity score (ISS) for the evaluation of differences among injured skiers-snowboarders. The aim of this study is to identify possible risk factors that affect the severity of skiing and snowboarding injuries in three winter seasons (2002-2005) in South Tyrol. For every injured skier or snowboarder referred to our emergency department in three consecutive seasons, the following data were collected: date of birth, gender, self-declared technical skills level, place of residence

Background Recreational sledging (tobogganing) is a very popular winter sport in Alpine regions. Ascending and sledging down on the same track, however, might be associated with a certain risk of injury. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gather data on the causes of accidents and potential risk factors during recreational sledging. Methods Adults indulging in recreational sledging were interviewed between March 2013 and March 2015 at six public sledging tracks in the environs of the city of Innsbruck (Tyrol, Austria) on demographics, skill level, sledging frequency, risk-taking behavior,

Introduction-The purpose of this study was to evaluate pediatric skiing and snowboarding fracture injuries at a large ski resort, comparing injury patterns in those who sustained fracture injuries at a single site against those with injuries in multiple sites. Given the more serious nature of multisite injuries, this information may give healthcare providers insight into injury patterns when assessing a patient in snow sport settings.Methods-Radiographs of 797 patients aged 3 to 17 y diagnosed with at least 1 skiing- or snowboarding-related fracture at a large ski resort were reviewed by a spo

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how currently used helmets would perform for winter play activities, such as tobogganing. In Canada and northern parts of the US, the advent of winter is followed by an increase in visits to hospital emergency departments by young children presenting with head injuries resulting from winter activities. Sliding, skating, skiing, and snowboarding all involve risks of head injury from situations such as falling on ice or sliding into stationary objects. This study compared the protective characteristics of helmets used by young children (< 7 years

We report six cases of a novel syndrome of acute, exertional low back pain in football players, five in college and one in the National Football League. All six are African Americans with sickle cell trait (SCT). The acute low back pain is severe and can be disabling, and the condition can be confused with muscle strain, discogenic pain, stress fracture, or other problems in athletes. Our evidence shows that this syndrome is caused by lumbar paraspinal myonecrosis (LPSMN), which likely often contributes to the lumbar paraspinal compartment syndrome. We explain why we believe SCT is a risk fact

BACKGROUND: Crowd crushes with dozens or even hundreds of casualties have occurred several times at the Hajj in Saudi Arabia and also in soccer stadiums in Western Europe. As fatal accidents after human stampedes during mass events occur very rarely and are usually accompanied by many years of criminal court proceedings in order to identify underlying responsible mechanisms and culprits, it is very difficult to draw conclusions and formulate precautions from an emergency medical point of view.
METHODS: This study analyzed a fatal crowd crush which occurred on 4 December 1999 following the "Ai

Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. are common intestinal protozoa that can cause diarrhoeal disease. Although cases of infection with Giardia and Cryptosporidium have been reported in Alaska, the seroprevalence and correlates of exposure to these parasites have not been characterised. We conducted a seroprevalence survey among 887 residents of Alaska, including sport hunters, wildlife biologists, subsistence bird hunters and their families and non-exposed persons. We tested serum using a multiplex bead assay to evaluate antibodies to the Giardia duodenalis variant-specific surface pro

BACKGROUND: Sledding, a fun and easily accessible winter sport, can potentially generate significant speed and energy posing a risk of injury. The objective of this study was to determine the speeds and potential kinetic energy generated by sledders.
METHODS: Observational study conducted of single sledders at sledding hills located in Monroe County, NY during February 2007. Participant's weight, age, and sled type were recorded. Speeds were recorded using Stalker police grade radar guns. Multiple runs by each sledder were measured. The kinetic energy for each run was calculated. Investigator
