Socially anxious mothers' narratives to their children and their relation to child representations and adjustment.

Anxious mothers' parenting, particularly transfer of threat information, has been considered important in their children's risk for social anxiety disorder (SAnxD), and maternal narratives concerning potential social threat could elucidate this contribution. Maternal narratives to their preschool 4- to 5-year-old children, via a picture book about starting school, were assessed in socially anxious (N = 73), and nonanxious (N = 63) mothers. Child representations of school were assessed via doll play (DP). After one school term, mothers (Child Behavior Checklist [CBCL]) and teachers (Teacher Rep

Beauty and the eye of the beholder: social consequences and personal adjustments for facial patients.

Patients' pre- and postoperative self-reports were compared with reports of non-medical observers to investigate whether improved self-esteem is a direct result of increased social acceptance in maxillo- and craniofacial patients. Twenty-two children and adolescents undergoing reconstructive surgery for a variety of facial deformities were asked to rate their physical appearance on the Hay's Scale and fill out the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale. Their ratings were compared with scores given by a panel of lay volunteers on random presentation of pre- and postoperative photographs of the same p

Reliability and Validity of the Work and Social Adjustment Scale in Treatment-Seeking Problem Gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Problem gambling is a growing concern as governments become more reliant on gambling revenue particularly from increases in gambling casinos. It is widely reported that problem gamblers experience both high levels of comorbid mental health issues and subsequent disability that comes with such. To date, there have been few measures tested with problem gamblers that are a good measure of this disability. The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is a five-item measure of disability, which is used widely in a number of clinical settings including gambling. METHOD: The reliability a

Differential effects of depression and mania symptoms on social adjustment: prospective study in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies of social adjustment in bipolar disorder have been cross-sectional and small in sample size, have examined a limited number of roles, or were not controlled for baseline mood and other clinical, social, or treatment confounders. We aimed to prospectively explore the strength and stability of correlations between depression and mania-type symptoms and impairment in a broad range of social adjustment roles and domains. METHODS: Multilevel modeling analysis of correlation coefficients between depression and mania-type symptoms with roles and domains of the modified s

Youths with ADHD with and without tic disorders: comorbid psychopathology, executive function and social adjustment.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorders (TD) commonly co-occur. Clarifying the psychiatric comorbidities, executive functions and social adjustment difficulties in children and adolescents of ADHD with and without TD is informative to understand the developmental psychopathology and to identify their specific clinical needs. This matched case-control study compared three groups (n=40 each) of youths aged between 8 and 16 years: ADHD with co-occurring TD (ADHD+TD), ADHD without TD (ADHD-TD) and typically developing community controls. Both ADHD groups had more co-occur

Social support, life events, and stress as modifiers of adjustment to bereavement by older adults.

As part of a larger panel study, interviews were obtained from 3 samples of older adults: 45 persons who had recently lost a spouse, 40 who had lost a parent or child, and 45 who were not bereaved. Assessments were conducted before and after the deaths. In the widowed sample, health remained quite stable, but depression increased sharply, then remained elevated. Changes were minimal in the sample who had lost a parent or child and in the nonbereaved sample. Multiple regression procedures were used to identify factors that contribute to depression and health 9 months after the spouse's death. P

Better together: Group-level social dynamics predict individuals' psychological adjustment during a major life transition.

Establishing new social connections is critical during the transition to university, especially for students who have moved far from home. We examined how students' one-on-one connections, along with the dynamics of their social groups, related to their adjustment across a school year. Participants were 717 first-year international undergraduates at a Canadian university who participated in a transition program involving assignment to orientation groups of 20-30 students. Cross-sectionally, students' individual-level social network measures were associated with better adjustment at the start o

Social adjustment and spouse relationships among women with stress incontinence before and after surgical treatment.

Forty-five women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and their partners have been interviewed three months before and one year after surgical treatment to investigate the social consequences of their impairment. One year after surgery 76% of the women reported that they were cured (group A, n = 34) and 24% that they were improved (group B, n = 11). The cured women were significantly younger than the improved women. The duration of urinary leakage before the operation was significantly shorter in group A than in group B. One year post surgery group A reported a significantly decrease in impe

The roles of self-compassion and social support on the maternal adjustment to a child's hip dysplasia.

Parenthood can be challenging when facing a child's chronic illness such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Although social support is known as a protective factor for the caregiver's mental health, the role of self-compassion is less explored. This study, conducted in Portugal, explored whether self-compassion and social support mediate the relationship between mothers' psychological adjustment and perception of their child's illness. Ninety-four mothers of children with DDH completed questionnaires on illness perception, self-compassion, perceived social support, and psychological

The importance of mutual positive expressivity in social adjustment: understanding the role of peers and gender.

The relations between young children's mutual (reciprocated) and overall positive emotion (PE) with same- and other-gender peers and their social adjustment were explored. Children's PE and peers' PE were observed across the preschool year during peer interactions (N = 166; 46% girls; M age = 52 months). Results revealed that girls and boys had similar frequencies of overall PE and mutual PE when interacting with same-gender peers, but girls were marginally higher compared with boys in overall and mutual PE when interacting with other-gender peers. Girls and boys did not have greater rates of

Anxiety, self-concept, and personal and social adjustments in children with sickle cell anemia.

The psychologic effect of sickle cell anemia, a life-long chronic illness, on the self-concept, anxiety level, and personal and social adjustments of school-aged children was investigated by using a battery of standard psychologic tests. Two groups of children were evaluated: a study group of 29 children with sickle cell anemia (hemoglobin SS) and a comparison group of 26 black inner city schoolchildren without sickle cell disease or other known chronic illness. The youngsters with sickle cell anemia did not differ from a peer group of schoolchildren in personal, social, and total adjustments.

Long-term trajectories of social adjustment and emotional/behavioral problems in pediatric post-acute COVID-19.

COVID-19 has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes in children. However, evidence regarding the long-term trajectories of post-acute symptoms remains limited. We examined long-term emotional and behavioral trajectories in children following COVID-19 infection. Eighty-four children (aged 6-16) with a confirmed COVID-19 were initially enrolled. Of these, 69 completed the three-year follow-up assessment and were included in the present analyses. Parents completed assessments approximately three months post-infection, retrospectively rating their child's behavior preceding infection
