The Moderating Effect of Social Capital on the Relationship Between Loneliness and Depression in Older Adults.

Loneliness contributes to depression in older adults, but research on effective intervention strategies remains limited. This study aims to examine the moderating effects of social capital on the relationship between loneliness and depression in older adults. Social capital was divided into structural and cognitive social categories. A self-report questionnaire was administered to 350 participants aged 65 or older, using the Korean version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Short-Form Geriatric Depression Scale, Structural Social Capital Scale, and Cognitive Social Capital Scale. Data from 334 pati

Participation in community gathering place and social capital: A longitudinal study of older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Social capital is a common target of intervention used by policymakers to address the health challenges of older adults. However, evidence for the effectiveness of social capital interventions remain still clearly lacking. METHODS: This study used a longitudinal study design. We used three waves of data (2016, 2017, and 2019) from 6025 older adults in Japan. We assessed ten social capital indicators in 2019 as outcomes. The exposure was participation in community gathering places in 2017. Pre-exposure characteristics and prior outcome levels in 2016 were adjusted. Linear regress

Effects of Living Alone on Social Capital and Health Among Older Adults in China.

Social capital has been connected with positive health outcomes across countries, including China. Given the rise in the number of seniors living alone, there is a need to examine the health benefits of social capital, accounting for living arrangements. Data from the 2005 Chinese General Social Survey were used to test research hypotheses. Controlling for demographics, elders living alone possessed similar level of social capital compared with elders living with others. While bonding and linking social capital were significant factors in urban areas and linking social capital was a significan

The 'dark side' of social capital: trust and self-rated health in European countries.

BACKGROUND: Generalized interpersonal trust (as an indicator of social capital) has been linked to health status at both the individual and ecological level. We sought to examine how changes in contextual and individual trust are associated with changes in self-rated health in the European Social Surveys 2002-12. METHODS: A multilevel analysis using a variance components model was performed on 203 452 individuals nested within 145 country cohorts covering 35 countries. Conditional on sociodemographic covariates, we sought to examine the association between self-rated health and individual tru

The effects of binge drinking and social capital on violent victimisation: findings from Moscow.

BACKGROUND: Rates of violence in Russia are among the highest in the world, and violent victimisation represents a major public health threat in the country. As yet, however, little research has been undertaken on what factors are associated with non-lethal violent victimisation in this setting. This study used data from the Moscow Health Survey 2004 to examine the effects of binge drinking and social capital on individuals' risk of non-fatal violent victimisation. METHODS: A stratified random sampling strategy was used across Moscow's 125 municipal districts to collect data from 1190 individ

Increasing social capital via local networks: analysis in the context of a surgical practice.

The relationship between social capital (support, trust, patient awareness, and increased practice revenue) and local networks (university hospital) in communities has received little attention. The development of computer-based communication networks (social networks) has added a new dimension to the argument, posing the question of whether local networks can (re-)create social capital in local communities. This relationship is examined through a review of the literature on local networks and social capital and a surgeon's practice management from 1990 to 2001 with respect to repair of pectus

Social capital and COVID-19 vaccination in prisons: a survey of attitudes, beliefs, and motivations.

BACKGROUND: UK prisons were profoundly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, uptake of the COVID-19 vaccination remained low in these settings. Social roles, relationships, and freedoms influence vaccine uptake. Prisons are isolated by design and may foster mistrust that negatively influences vaccine uptake. Prisons are also unique communities with their own social networks and relationships. METHODS: We undertook a questionnaire survey across all six prisons in Wales, UK, to gather data on vaccine behaviour, attitudes, and other influencing factors. We fitted binomial generalised

The ties that transplant: The social capital determinants of the living kidney donor relationship distribution.

The network perspective on social capital decomposes it into ego's network size, alters' relevant resources, and social factors moderating access to alters' resources, but rarely examines how it is distributed across relationship types. Using this approach, I investigate the situationally-relevant social capital relationship distribution and its association with health-related social support, with an application to the living kidney donor relationship distribution. Analyzing an original survey of transplant candidates (N = 72) and their reports on their family and friends (N = 1548), I compare

The Role of Social Capital in African Americans' Attempts to Reduce and Quit Cocaine Use.

BACKGROUND: Research examining substance users' recovery has focused on individual-level outcomes while paying limited attention to the contexts within which individuals are embedded, and the social processes involved in recovery. OBJECTIVES: This paper examines factors underlying African American cocaine users' decisions to reduce or quit cocaine use and uses practice theory to understand how lifestyle changes and shifts in social networks facilitate access to the capital needed to change cocaine use patterns. METHODS: The study, an in-depth analysis of substance-use life history interviews

The stratification of social capital and its consequences for self-rated health in Taganrog, Russia.

Russian public health and its social determinants have been the theme of several recent studies. In one of these, Rose [(2000). How much does social capital add to individual health? A survey study of Russians. Social Science & Medicine, 51(9), 1421-1435] puts forward a composite model as a way of getting away from two traditions: one that postulates that social capital influences health independently of human capital attributes (education, social class, income, etc.) and one that postulates that human capital is the main determinant of health, while social capital is more or less irrelevant.

Transforming work or eroding social capital? How reliance on artificial intelligence drives workplace involution.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into organizational contexts is reshaping how employees work, interact, and respond to changing workplace dynamics. Although AI is often expected to improve efficiency and reduce workload, emerging evidence points to a potential dark side, as AI adoption may intensify competitive pressure within organizations. Motivated by this paradox, this study examines how AI reliance may erode workplace social capital by fostering involution-an excessive and inefficient form of competition characterized by escalating effort and diminishing returns. Social capital and grassroots organisational change: a comparative case study from post-Morakot Taiwan.

Grassroots organisations (GOs) often emerge spontaneously in disaster contexts to fill gaps left by formal authorities, changing their structures and functions to meet evolving community needs. While prior research documents these transformations, it offers limited insight into why they occur and what they mean for disaster recovery. Social capital (SC) is critical for collective action, but its role in shaping grassroots organisational change remains underexplored. This study, examining community-based GOs in Taiwan following Typhoon Morakot in 2009, investigates how SC influences organisatio
