Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Effect of Motor Intervention on Cognition, Communication, and Social Interaction in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

AIMS: Conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of motor intervention on social, communication, and cognitive skills in individuals (0-21 years) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Seven databases were used to search for randomized control trials (RCT) implementing a motor intervention for children with ASD; and measured social, communication, and cognitive outcomes. Twenty-three RCTs were selected with 66 outcomes and 636 participants (range of mean age: 4.3 - 12.3 years). RESULTS: Motor interventions had a significant, positive effect on (1) all outcomes combin

Effects of mini-basketball training program on social communication impairments and regional homogeneity of brain functions in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social communication impairments (SCI) is a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is marked by challenges in social interaction. Although physical exercise has been shown to improve SCI, this finding has not been supported by comprehensive scientific evidence. Existing research has established a strong link between the SCI in children with ASD and abnormalities in regional homogeneity (ReHo). Therefore, investigating the effects of physical exercise on SCI and Reho in patients with ASD may help to elucidate the neurological mechanisms involved. METHODS: The present st

Do children with social communication disorder have explicit knowledge of pragmatic rules they break? A comparison of conversational pragmatic ability and metapragmatic awareness.

BACKGROUND: Children who have social communication disorder (CwSCD) demonstrate persistent difficulties with language pragmatics in conversations and other verbal interactions. Speech-language interventions for these children often include promotion of metapragmatic awareness (MPA); that is, the ability to identify explicitly and reflect upon pragmatic rules (MP explicitation). Improved MPA is assumed to support increased self-monitoring and generalization of pragmatic knowledge. Evidence to support this as a mechanism of intervention depends upon the identification of a systematic relationshi

Neuropsychological profile and clinical benefits of multimodal interventions in a child with ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder within the context of intellectual giftedness: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, particular interest has been directed toward the topic of intellectual giftedness. An IQ above 130, typically assessed with standardized cognitive scales, is a widely recognized criterion for giftedness. Gifted children often face emotional and socio-relational difficulties, particularly anxiety, due to perfectionism and high-performance pressures. Co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder complicate their adaptation in various life contexts. This is the case of twice

Role of emotional social support in COVID-19 booster uptake among drug use disorder communities.

Background: Social support is an established determinant of health behaviors, yet its role in COVID 19 booster uptake and general healthcare utilization remains unclear. This gap is especially relevant for drug use disorders (DUDs) communities, who face stigma, disrupted social networks, and barriers to preventive and routine care. Examining how different types of social support relate to preventive behavior and healthcare engagement in this population may clarify whether support operates differently across health behaviors. Objectives: This study examines how social support relate to COVID-19

Molecules, Mechanisms, and Disorders of Self-Domestication: Keys for Understanding Emotional and Social Communication from an Evolutionary Perspective.

The neural crest hypothesis states that the phenotypic features of the domestication syndrome are due to a reduced number or disruption of neural crest cells (NCCs) migration, as these cells differentiate at their final destinations and proliferate into different tissues whose activity is reduced by domestication. Comparing the phenotypic characteristics of modern and prehistoric man, it is clear that during their recent evolutionary past, humans also went through a process of self-domestication with a simultaneous prolongation of the period of socialization. This has led to the development of

Prevalence and features of spontaneous recurrent images in social anxiety disorder: findings from a Korean community sample.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often experience spontaneous, recurrent images (SRI). It was assumed that Koreans with interdependent self-views may contain more features related to social contexts in their self-images than those reported in Western cultures. AIMS: In the present study, we aimed to explore the prevalence and content of SRIs in individuals with SAD in Korea. Furthermore, we investigated the relationship between features of SRIs and variables of SAD. METHOD: Sixty-four individuals with SAD (27.00 ± 7.42 years, 64.1% fe

Two-Stage Gamified Digital Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder Screening and the Limits of Differentiating Social Communication Disorder in Children and Adolescents: Cross-Sectional Diagnostic Accuracy Study Using Explainable Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from social communication disorder (SCD) is clinically challenging because both conditions present with overlapping social communication deficits. Standard caregiver-reported instruments capture surface-level behavioral similarities rather than underlying cognitive differences, motivating the development of digital gamified assessments that measure social cognitive processes directly. OBJECTIVE: This study developed and evaluated a 2-stage gamified digital pipeline: stage 1 (Buddy Plan, a self-report module) for high-sensitivity ASD sc

Decreased structural connectivity and resting-state brain activity in the lateral occipital cortex is associated with social communication deficits in boys with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by atypical social communication and repetitive behaviors. In this study, we applied a multimodal approach to investigate brain structural connectivity, resting state activity, and surface area, as well as their associations with the core symptoms of ASD. Data from forty boys with ASD (mean age, 11.5 years; age range, 5.5-19.5) and forty boys with typical development (TD) (mean age, 12.3; age range, 5.8-19.7) were extracted from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange II (ABIDE II) for data analysis. Community-Level Social Support Infrastructure and Adult Onset of Major Depressive Disorder in a South Asian Postconflict Setting.

IMPORTANCE: Individual-level social support protects against major depressive disorder (MDD) among adults exposed to trauma. Little is known about the consequences of community-level interventions in the general population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential consequences of neighborhood social infrastructure on incident MDD in a high-risk general population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal, multilevel study estimated associations between a neighborhood-level program in a case-control design and subsequent individual outcomes across 10 years (2006-2015) in a cohort of

Modeling the Associations Between Personality, Cognition, and Social Determinants in Relation to Substance Use Disorder Severity in Community Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To develop more effective intervention strategies for substance use disorder (SUD), it is essential to create models that evaluate the relative influence of various risk factors. This study constructed an integrated biopsychosocial model to examine the associations of different risk vulnerability domains with SUD severity. METHOD: 251 community adults aged 18-55 (female = 48.2%; White = 64.1%, Black = 26.7%, Asian American = 8.0%, American Indian/Alaska Native = 2.0%, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander = 1.6%, Hispanic =7.6%), completed clinical diagnostic interviews, neuropsychologi

Imbalanced social-communicative and restricted repetitive behavior subtypes of autism spectrum disorder exhibit different neural circuitry.

Social-communication (SC) and restricted repetitive behaviors (RRB) are autism diagnostic symptom domains. SC and RRB severity can markedly differ within and between individuals and may be underpinned by different neural circuitry and genetic mechanisms. Modeling SC-RRB balance could help identify how neural circuitry and genetic mechanisms map onto such phenotypic heterogeneity. Here, we developed a phenotypic stratification model that makes highly accurate (97-99%) out-of-sample SC = RRB, SC > RRB, and RRB > SC subtype predictions. Applying this model to resting state fMRI data from the EU-A

Gastrointestinal problems are associated with increased repetitive behaviors but not social communication difficulties in young children with autism spectrum disorders.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are more likely than typically developing individuals to experience a range of gastrointestinal abnormalities, including chronic diarrhea, constipation, food sensitivities, and abdominal pain. These gastrointestinal symptoms have been associated with higher levels of irritability and aggressive behavior, but less is known about their relationship with core autism spectrum disorder symptoms. We investigated the relationship between autism spectrum disorder symptom severity and gastrointestinal symptoms while accounting for three associated behavioral sy
