Realizing policy aspirations of voluntary sector involvement in integrated care provision: Insights from the English National Health Service.

Integrating voluntary sector organizations (VSOs) into complex health and social care provision is a priority in global healthcare policy. However, realization of these policy aspirations in practice is limited, as VSOs struggle to collaborate with health and social care professionals, or influence the wider healthcare system, undermining their potential involvement in care provision. This paper aims to increase understandings of how the policy implementation gap could be addressed, by asking: how do new workforce roles support VSO involvement in delivering integrated care? Drawing on 40 inter

Centering equity in flavored tobacco ban policies: Implications for tobacco control researchers.

To achieve equity in protection from poor health outcomes due to tobacco use, tobacco control policies and interventions need to affect socially disadvantaged groups more strongly than advantaged groups. Flavored tobacco bans have been seen as a policy with this potential. However, tobacco control researchers, in close concert with policy advocates, need to consider how to center equity throughout the policy process to achieve equitable outcomes from banning flavored tobacco. In this commentary, we outline the rationale for how and why tobacco control researchers should consider equity through

Interventions for prevention of bullying in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: Bullying has been identified as one of the leading workplace stressors, with adverse consequences for the individual employee, groups of employees, and whole organisations. Employees who have been bullied have lower levels of job satisfaction, higher levels of anxiety and depression, and are more likely to leave their place of work. Organisations face increased risk of skill depletion and absenteeism, leading to loss of profit, potential legal fees, and tribunal cases. It is unclear to what extent these risks can be addressed through interventions to prevent bullying. OBJECTIVES:

Health risk behaviors: prevention priorities among Portuguese incarcerated males.

PURPOSE: Incarcerated people have been identified as a vulnerable population prone to health risk behaviors (HRBs). This study aims to compare a set of HRBs in Portuguese incarcerated males with a community-matched control group and explore the influence of social-emotional competences and self-control on these behaviors. The authors expect that incarcerated males would present more HRBs in comparison to the community sample. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study included 573 participants (312 incarcerated males and 251 males from the community). FINDINGS: Incarcerated males exhibited highe

Minors in name only: child laborers on the diamond mines of the "Companhia de Diamantes de Angola" (Diamang), 1917-1975.

Although African men and women comprised the vast majority of the labor force on Angola's colonial-era diamond mines, child laborers, or "minors," also played important roles, primarily as mineworkers and plantation laborers. While these young male and female laborers' daily tasks were often lighter than those assigned to adult males, they often worked side-by-side with more senior workers and were equally subject to physical abuse, poor rations, and injuries. Similarly, minors also employed many of the same strategies as their more senior coworkers to better their lives. Their experiences sug

What factors influence smoking prevalence and smoke free policy enactment across the European Union Member States.

BACKGROUND: Smoking prevention should be a primary public health priority for all governments, and effective preventive policies have been identified for decades. The heterogeneity of smoking prevalence between European Union (EU) Member States therefore reflects, at least in part, a failure by governments to prioritise public health over tobacco industry or possibly other financial interests, and hence potentially government corruption. The aims of this study were to test the hypothesis that smoking prevalence is higher in countries with high levels of public sector corruption, and explore th

Between Choice and Coercion? The Processes of Increased Economic Vulnerability Among Low-Income Older Workers.

The social phenomenon of extended working age has been subject to broad scholarly and social policy interest, as part of such trends as the aging of the population, increased life expectancy, shortage of the labor force, and policy debates on pension reforms. A major question about extending working age, or working after retirement, is whether it is a matter of choice, taking control of one's later life, or is coerced, part of entering the precariat. This study provides a nuanced examination of the social processes that direct labor market participation among older workers by conducting an ana

Sexual diversity, social inclusion and HIV/AIDS.

Despite a number of programmes to prevent HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and, more generally, sexually diverse populations, gay and other homosexually active men continue to be at heightened risk of HIV and its consequences. This paper analyses some of the reasons for this situation and offers policy and programmatic recommendations to contribute to a solution. The social exclusion of MSM and transgender individuals is an overwhelming reality in the majority of countries worldwide. Although progress has been achieved in some countries, in most of the world the situation remains prob

Feminist critiques of new fertility technologies: implications for social policy.

This essay aims to show how feminist theoretical and practical perspective have enriched and deepened debate about moral and social issues generated by the proliferation and commodification of new reproductive techniques. It evaluates alternative feminist appraisals beginning with the first group to organize a collective response to the medicalization of infertility and explores several weaknesses working within their assessment: objectification of infertile women, naturalizing constructions of motherhood, hostility to technology, and an overly simplistic conception of power relations. Next, i

Adding to the HIV Prevention Portfolio - the Achievement of Structural Changes by 13 Connect to Protect® Coalitions.

Opportunities to control risk factors that contribute to HIV transmission and acquisition extend far beyond individuals and include addressing social and structural determinants of HIV risk, such as inadequate housing, poor access to healthcare and economic insecurity. The infrastructure within communities, including the policies and practices that guide institutions and organizations, should be considered crucial targets for change. This paper examines the extent to which 13 community coalitions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico were able to achieve "structural change" objectives (i.e., new or

Assessing the integration of social protection into infectious disease policies: a multi-country analysis of TB, HIV, and malaria strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and malaria continue to impose major economic hardship on households in Sub-Saharan Africa. While global frameworks such as the WHO End TB Strategy and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) emphasize social protection, evidence remains limited on how national policies translate these commitments into practice. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed how national TB, HIV, and malaria policies and strategic plans in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia define and operationalize social-protection mechanisms to reduce household economic burden. It also examined ali

Byssinosis--an historical perspective.

Based on the history of the growing awareness and recognition of ailments associated with the manufacture of cotton, it is concluded that recognition of byssinosis in the United States came late. In the American south byssinosis existed in an industry and within a social framework that helped to retard the acceptance of byssinosis as an undesirable but controllable disease. As late as the 1960s, United states medical opinion declared the disease nonexistent in American textile mills. In 1970, the scientific community showed that byssinosis existed in the United States. Mobilization of public o

School masking and COVID-19 community transmission: a synthetic control study.

INTRODUCTION: K-12 schools are not only educational settings but also hubs of social interaction, making them potential drivers of disease transmission within households and communities. While many existing studies have assessed school masking in relation to in-school transmission, the broader community impact of mandatory school masking policies on SARS-CoV-2 infection rates remains poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective quasi-experimental study using the synthetic control method to evaluate the association between masking policies and community infection rates during the f

From silos to policy coherence: tobacco control, unhealthy commodity industries and the commercial determinants of health.

Tobacco control has achieved remarkable successes, underpinned by the distinctive norms codified in Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Tobacco control's experience in managing conflicts of interest is increasingly recognised as relevant for addressing other non-communicable disease epidemics. At the same time, the wider environmental and social harms of tobacco-and other unhealthy commodity industries-underline the potential for enhanced strategic collaboration across health, development and environmental agendas. Such collaboration is increasingly necessary to add

Real-time responses to epidemics: A Reinforcement-Learning approach.

Open-loop optimal control applied to epidemic outbreaks is a valuable tool to develop control principles and inform future preparedness guidelines. A drawback of this approach is its assumption of complete knowledge of both transmission dynamics and the effects of policy measures. As a result, such methods lack responsiveness to real-time conditions, since they do not integrate feedback from the evolving epidemic state. Overcoming this requires a closed-loop approach. We propose a novel closed-loop method for real-time social distancing responses using a general Reinforcement Learning (RL)-bas

Provincial and territorial results and recommendations from the Canadian Alcohol Policy Evaluation project: Room for improvement.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate existing alcohol policies in Canadian provinces and territories (P/Ts) against evidence-based best practice policies aimed at reducing alcohol-related harms and improving population health. METHODS: Alcohol policies in Canadian P/Ts were evaluated across 11 policy domains. The scoring rubric was formulated based on the latest evidence-based public health criteria. Policy domains were weighted to reflect their relative effectiveness and scope. Data were collected by the research team, reviewed and validated by government contacts, and scored by designated team members. S

Neglected Tropical Diseases, Health, and Education: Evidence From China.

While extensive research has examined the impacts of fatal infectious diseases, relatively little attention has been devoted to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), which are typically non-fatal but impose significant health, social, and economic burdens. This study investigates the effects of a comprehensive schistosomiasis prevention and control policy implemented in China in 2006 on disease prevalence, as well as on the health and educational outcomes of compulsory education age children who had in-utero exposure to the policy. Using the policy as a quasi-experiment, we employ a difference-i

The Impact of the Natural, Social, Built, and Policy Environments on Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of breast cancer in women is substantial and increasing. Efforts to address breast cancer have focused on primary prevention, reduction of modifiable risk factors, early detection, timely referral for appropriate treatment, and survivorship. Environmental and lifestyle factors that increase breast cancer risk include ionizing radiation, exogenous hormones, certain female reproductive factors, alcohol and other dietary factors, obesity, and physical inactivity. A variety of chemical exposures are purported to be associated with breast cancer. METHODS: In this arti
