Meningococcal disease and social deprivation: a small area geographical study in Gwent, UK.

Although meningococcal disease is known to be linked to characteristics of individuals associated with social deprivation, there is only limited evidence of a relation with area-based measures of deprivation. In a small area geographical study, we ascertained 295 confirmed or probable cases occurring between 1996 and 1999 in the socially diverse resident population of Gwent Health Authority, equating to an average annual rate of 13.2 per 100,000. Incidence rates of meningococcal disease increased from 8.1 per 100,000 in the least deprived fifth of enumeration districts to 19.8 per 100,000 in t

Neighborhood Deprivation and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: Does Social Support Modify the Association?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported associations between neighborhood deprivation and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), but without considering effect measure modification by social support. METHODS: This study used the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-To-Be longitudinal cohort, which recruited participants between 2010 and 2013 across the United States. We used linear probability models with robust standard errors to estimate risk differences for associations of the area deprivation index (ADI) and social support with HDP. Perceived social support was

Does social deprivation influence timely presentation of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed presentation of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is common in the UK and is characterised by larger Cobb angles at diagnosis. The size of the Cobb angle influences the mode and effectiveness of treatment strategies and worsens the overall outcome and prognosis. Severe scoliosis typically necessitates surgical correction. We hypothesised that social deprivation may be one factor that contributes to delayed presentation. AIMS: To assess whether social deprivation is associated with greater spinal curvature at first consultation. METHODS: A retrospective study of childr

Social Deprivation and Post-TAVR Outcomes in Ontario, Canada: A Population-Based Study.

Background Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)/intervention has become the standard of care for treatment of severe aortic stenosis across the spectrum of risk. There are socioeconomic disparities in access to TAVR. The impact of these disparities on postprocedural outcomes remains unknown. Our objective was to examine the association between neighborhood-level social deprivation and post-TAVR mortality and hospital readmission. Methods and Results We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of all 4145 patients in Ontario, Canada, who received TAVR from April 1, 2017,

The Relationship between Frailty, Obesity and Social Deprivation in Non-Institutionalized Elderly People.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing prevalence of obesity and the risk of increased dependency among the elderly, it becomes important to characterize the link between obesity and frailty. The relationship between obesity and social deprivation would be bidirectional, with each influencing the other. OBJECTIVES: Main objective was to study the relationship between frailty as defined by Fried and obesity (Body Mass Index (BMI) and abdominal obesity). Secondary objective was to assess the relationship between frailty and social deprivation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study,

Association between maternal social deprivation and prenatal care utilization: the PreCARE cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal social deprivation is associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Inadequate prenatal care utilization (PCU) is likely to be an important intermediate factor. The health care system in France provides essential health services to all pregnant women irrespective of their socioeconomic status. Our aim was to assess the association between maternal social deprivation and PCU. METHODS: The analysis was performed in the database of the multicenter prospective PreCARE cohort study. The population source consisted in all parturient women registe

Where health and welfare meet: social deprivation among patients in the emergency department.

CONTEXT: As a safety net provider for many disadvantaged Americans, the emergency department (ED) may be an efficient site not only for providing acute medical care, but also for addressing serious social needs. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the social needs of ED patients, and to evaluate whether the most disadvantaged patients have connections with the health and welfare system outside the ED. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey conducted over 24 hours in the fall of 1997. SETTING: Three EDs: an urban public teaching hospital, a suburban university hospital, and a semirural community hospital. The use of the water deprivation test for the diagnosis of apparent psychogenic polydipsia in a socially deprived African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus).

A case report is presented of primary (psychogenic) polydipsia in a pet African grey parrot. A water deprivation test was employed to test the release of arginine vasotocin and the response of the kidneys to this neurohypophyseal hormone. After a diagnosis was made water restriction resulted in the disappearance of clinical signs. It seems that psychogenic polydipsia, like feather picking, is a neurosis resulting from social deprivation.

Area-Level Social Deprivation and Cytomegalovirus Seropositivity at the Time of Solid Organ Transplant.

IMPORTANCE: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. The risk factors for CMV seropositivity in SOT recipients, including area-level social deprivation in the US, have not been fully characterized. OBJECTIVE: To (1) evaluate CMV seroprevalence, (2) assess the recipient characteristics associated with CMV seropositivity, and (3) assess the association of area-level social deprivation index (SDI) scores with pretransplant CMV serostatus. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cross-sectional analysis

Effects of propofol and sevoflurane on social and anxiety-related behaviours in sleep-deprived rats.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders can profoundly affect neurological function. We investigated changes in social and anxiety-related brain functional connectivity induced by sleep deprivation, and the potential therapeutic effects of the general anaesthetics propofol and sevoflurane in rats. METHODS: Twelve-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to sleep deprivation for 20 h per day (from 14:00 to 10:00 the next day) for 4 consecutive weeks. They were free from sleep deprivation for the remaining 4 h during which they received propofol (40 mg kg-1 i.p.) or sevoflurane (2% for 2 h) per day

Reporting of social deprivation in musculoskeletal trials: An analysis of 402 randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Social deprivation is broadly defined as the restriction of access an individual has to social or cultural interactions due to poverty, discrimination or other disadvantages. While social deprivation is a widely acknowledged determinant of outcome in musculoskeletal conditions, it remains unclear how this is considered in the conduct and interpretation of musculoskeletal trials. AIM: To determine the frequently to which measures of social deprivation are reported in trials recruiting people with musculoskeletal diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a Pubmed search of rand

Social deprivation and poor access to care as risk factors for severe pre-eclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the associations between biomedical, social and health care factors and the occurrence of severe pre-eclampsia, eclampsia or HELLP syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study conducted in 14 of the 15 maternity hospitals of Brussels. Cases were all 99 women who delivered in these hospitals in 1996 and who had severe pre-eclampsia, eclampsia or HELLP syndrome. Controls were 200 women without these severe maternal conditions, randomly selected among women who delivered in the same hospitals during the same period. Crude odds ratios were computed and adjusted odds ratios

The effect of social deprivation on the incidence rate of carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome surgery.

We sought to establish whether carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome requiring surgery is associated with deprivation in England. Data from 10,496 adult patients who were treated in our hand unit over a 20-year period were reviewed. The Index of Multiple Deprivation was used to measure deprivation from the patients' postcode. The mean age at surgery in the most deprived three quintiles was significantly lower than in the least deprived two quintiles for carpal tunnel release (55 vs 59 years, respectively) and cubital tunnel release (52 vs 57 years, respectively). The incidence rate was significan

Iron and phosphorus deprivation induce sociality in the marine bloom-forming cyanobacterium Trichodesmium.

Trichodesmium spp. are diazotrophic cyanobacteria that exist as single filaments (trichomes) and as macroscopic colonies of varying shapes formed by aggregating trichomes. The causes and dynamics of colony formation and disassociation are not yet elucidated. we demonstrate that limited availability of dissolved phosphorus (P) or iron (Fe) stimulated trichome mobility and induced colony formation in Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101 cultures. The specific nutrient limitation differentially affected the rate of colony formation and morphology of the colonies. Fe starvation promoted rapid colony fo
