Early memories and maladjustment.

Earliest memories were elicited from 60 undergraduates, who also completed the Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank, Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, Wahler Physical Symptoms Inventory, and Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Early memories were scored for the three factors identified by Caruso and Spirrison (Emotional Poise, Activity, and Dependability). These scores were not significantly associated with indices of maladjustment or the social desirability measure. Age at reported earliest memory was significantly related to maladjustment, with persons reporting first memories prior to 4 year

Source consistency, distinctiveness, and consensus: the three dimensions of the Kelley ANOVA model in persuasion.

Based on a conceptual analysis and existing research, the authors propose that the three source dimensions specified in the ANOVA model play similar roles in persuasion as other source characteristics (e.g., expertise). Two studies test assumptions derived from this approach regarding the effects of different combinations of consistency and consensus (Study 1) and distinctiveness and consensus (Study 2). Combinations resulting in contradictory (vs. similar) inferences regarding message validity should affect judgmental confidence and, consequently, affect message scrutiny. Study 1 shows that,

The Good, the Bad, and the Language: Capturing Implicit Social Evaluation of Personality Traits via the Fill‑Mask Association Test.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether linguistic evaluation of personality traits-the association of trait words with good versus bad in natural language-constitutes a diffuse halo or is selectively amplified for dimensions central to social functioning. METHOD: Using the Fill-Mask Association Test (FMAT), the present study extracted log probability ratios (LPR) of good vs. bad from 12 BERT models across three sentence contexts for 733 personality adjectives. These LPR scores were compared with human normative ratings (valence, social desirability, and observability) and with Big Five st

The relationship between command hallucinations and violence.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between command hallucinations and violent behavior. METHODS: One hundred and three psychiatric inpatients completed measures of command hallucinations, other psychotic symptoms, violent behavior, and social desirability response biases. RESULTS: Thirty percent of the patients reported having had command hallucinations to harm others during the last year, and 22 percent of the patients reported they complied with such commands. Logistic regression analyses suggested that patients who experienced command hallucinations to h

Implicit attitudes towards risky driving behaviors: Evidence of validity for the implicit association test.

INTRODUCTION: Attitudes toward risky driving behaviors are commonly evaluated through direct self-report measures. Nevertheless, these instruments have limitations, such as socially-desirable responding. This study examines the validity of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as an indirect measure of attitudes towards risky driving. An IAT with "risky" vs. "safe" driving behaviors categories was evaluated. METHOD: A sample of 100 participants (ranging from 18 to 70 years of age) completed the IAT and measures of attitudes, driving styles, personality traits, risk-taking (IOWA Gambling Task),

Personal and general belief in a just world as judgement norms.

Research on the belief in a just world (BJW) has focused on its intra-individual functions (e.g., psychological well-being) and its inter-individual consequences (e.g., derogation of victims). Recent theorizing, however, has indicated that the BJW may also have more societal functions and consequences, serving as a legitimizing device of the status quo. The studies in the current paper focus on this latter view and are based on Alves and Correia's ( 2008 ) research which found that the expression of high personal and general belief in a just world is injunctively normative. Two experimental st

Association Between Self-Perceived Mate Value and Self-Esteem: A Meta-Analysis.

Self-perceived mate value (SPMV) is the perceived desirability of the person as a mate. The relationship between SPMV and self-esteem has been reported in many studies, but how much and why these two variables are associated has not been well explored. The present meta-analysis examines the association between self-esteem and SPMV and the potential reasons for its variability. The analysis included 23 records (26 datasets, N = 11,837) published till December 2025. The findings revealed a strong positive association between SPMV and self-esteem (r = 0.512, 95% CI = [0.467, 0.553], p < 0.001). M

Locked away twice: The role of minimisation and denial of childhood trauma in prison rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Minimising childhood trauma in forensic settings can obscure assessment accuracy by producing false negatives. The Minimisation/Denial (MD) scale of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) is traditionally interpreted as an indicator of social desirability, however, response bias in correctional contexts is likely bidirectional. It remains unclear whether MD items distinguish social desirability from protective coping or culturally shaped disclosure practices, particularly in correctional settings. OBJECTIVE: This research investigated the CTQ MD scale by analysing reporting beha

A new measurement of an indirect measure of condom use and its relationships with barriers.

One of the challenges facing researchers in the domain of human immunodeficiency virus prevention is the assessment of condom use in an unbiased self-reported manner. The current study presents the development and preliminary validation of an indirect condom use test (I-CUTE), designed to assess condom use tendencies and to overcome self-report biases. Two samples were included using correlational designs. In sample 1, 88 students from European university completed the I-CUTE with questionnaires of condom use barriers, social desirability, and condom use negotiation self-efficacy. In sample 2,

Kill them with kindness: preliminary evidence for women's competitive altruism.

INTRODUCTION: We developed the Competitive Altruism Survey (CAS) to test how intrasexual competition (i.e., competitive altruism) relates to Machiavellianism, Big Five personality traits, social desirability, and impression management. METHODS: A sample of 103 heterosexual cisgender women aged 18 to 45 years completed an online survey. Results: Competitive altruism was strongly and positively related to Machiavellianism and negatively related to Agreeableness and was more used when directed at other women than at men. Neuroticism was correlated with anxiety and frustration that accompany stra

Assessing interpersonal violence involvement in psychiatric patients: exploratory findings on the Interpersonal Violence Questionnaire (IVIQ).

BACKGROUND: Despite the high rates of both violence victimization and perpetration in people experiencing mental illness, standardized screening tools in research and for routine psychiatric assessment are lacking, underscoring the need for feasible, standardized assessment approaches. METHODS: A sample of adult psychiatric in- and out-patients at six German hospitals was surveyed, using the Interpersonal Violence Questionnaire (IVIQ), a 26-item self-report checklist assessing experiences of physical violence, sexual violence, and threats, both as victimization and perpetration, across the pa

[Study on self and other ratings of hostility].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of hostility ratings made by others. The rating measure was considered essential for the study of correlation between hostility and coronary heart disease. Undergraduate and graduate students, 81 in all, completed a questionnaire of hostility and social desirability. The scales included were Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BAQ), Müller Anger Coping Questionnaire (MAQ), and Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSD). Acquaintances also rated them using BAQ and MAQ. Correlations between self and other ratings were moderate, and

Psychological aspects and coping of parents with a haemophilic child: a quantitative approach.

Although haemophilia is a relatively rare hereditary disease, and is curable by blood products, the psychological and social problems of haemophilic patients and of their families are always serious. Anxiety for the risks of bleedings and the fear for infections transmitted by blood products cause stress and difficulty in coping with the situation. The aim of this paper is to assess resources, stress, and coping in parents with a haemophilic child. In order to measure the dimensions related to family stress and resources, social desirability, tendency to depression, and anxiety, the subjects w

Ideal female body shape: role of body weight and waist-to-hip ratio.

Interrelationships of female body fat distribution as measured by the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), overall body size, perceived attractiveness, youthfulness, health, and need to lose weight were investigated. Drawings showing thin females with high WHRs and heavier females with low WHRs were presented to college-age women with low and high scores on the Restrained Eating Scale (Herman & Polivy. [1980]. Obesity [pp. 208-225]. Philadelphia: Saunders) and men who ranked figures for various attributes. Female subjects, regardless of their eating style, as well as male subjects, judged heavier female

Effects of social behavior on children's attitudes toward their mildly and moderately mentally retarded peers.

The ability of prosocial behavior attributes to ameliorate the negative attitudes often brought about by negative personal characteristics associated with mild and moderate mental retardation was assessed. Subjects (191 nonretarded fourth through sixth-grade boys and girls) viewed a videotape of either a nonretarded, mildly retarded, or moderately retarded target child who was reading. They then were read a story depicting the target as either socially competent, withdrawn, or aggressive. On three measures, children in general responded favorably toward retarded target children who were social

Personality and depression in women.

Personality disorders and traits should be assessed in studies concerned with the etiology and treatment of depression in women. There has been a considerable amount of research concerned with the effect of personality functioning on the etiology and treatment of depression, and much of this research has concerned personality traits and disorders for which significant gender differences and issues apply. The importance of personality functioning, and the particular relevance to women and gender-related issues, is illustrated in this paper with regard to dependent personality disorder and depen

Imagined halitosis: a social phobia symptom?

Imagined halitosis is poorly documented in the psychiatric literature. It is perhaps best thought of as a symptom rather than as a specific syndrome (a collection of symptoms that co-vary together). Many of the cases with imagined halitosis described in the literature resemble the psychiatric syndrome of social phobia.

[The effects of conscious and subconscious processing of hostility- or friendliness-related words on the personality impression of others].

Four experiments were conducted to investigate how the prior processing of trait relevant information influenced upon the impression formation. Twenty university students participated in each experiment. First subjects performed a cognitive task in which they processed hostility (Exp. I, II) or friendliness (Exp. III, IV) related words, consciously (Exp. I, III) or subconsciously (Exp. II, IV). In another ostensibly unrelated task, subjects rated a stimulus person on several trait scales based on an ambiguous behavioral description, regarding to hostility (Exp. I, II) or friendliness (Exp. Dimensions of life stress in psychiatric patients.

A combined checklist and interview methodology was developed to assess the occurrence of life events among psychiatric patients. In addition to identifying events, patients were asked to rate them on 11 dimensions assumed to be important in mediating the impact of life stress. A factor analysis of ratings of 479 events from 64 patients, yielded three factors, reflecting the desirability of events, perceived control over their occurrence, and the readjustment required by events. However, ratings of social support available for help in coping with events and prior experience with similar events
