Associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life: the buffering effects of social support networks.

Stress and discrimination negatively affect quality of life, but social support may buffer their effects. This study aims: (1) to examine the associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL); and (2) to assess whether social support, stress and discrimination interact to modify their associations with OHRQoL. We used cross-sectional household-based data from a study including 396 individuals aged 14 years and over from families registered for government social benefits in a city in Southern Brazil. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Imp

The effects of racism, social exclusion, and discrimination on achieving universal safe water and sanitation in high-income countries.

Drinking water and sanitation services in high-income countries typically bring widespread health and other benefits to their populations. Yet gaps in this essential public health infrastructure persist, driven by structural inequalities, racism, poverty, housing instability, migration, climate change, insufficient continued investment, and poor planning. Although the burden of disease attributable to these gaps is mostly uncharacterised in high-income settings, case studies from marginalised communities and data from targeted studies of microbial and chemical contaminants underscore the need

The roles of discrimination and social support in the associations between outness and mental health outcomes among sexual minorities.

Compared to heterosexual individuals, sexual minorities exhibit elevated risk for depression and borderline personality disorder (BPD). One psychosocial factor relevant to sexual minority mental health is outness, or the degree to which an individual discloses or conceals their sexual orientation. Previous findings are mixed regarding whether outness is associated with better or worse mental health, likely because outness can have positive consequences (e.g., social support) and negative consequences (e.g., discrimination). Support exists for both mechanisms, but previous studies have not simu

Within-person dynamics of identity-based discrimination, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and social support among multicultural adolescents in South Korea.

In South Korea, multicultural (damunhwa) adolescents represent a growing population that continues to encounter identity-based discrimination in school and peer contexts. Using six annual waves of data from multicultural adolescents in South Korea (N = 1635; 50.5% girls; ages 10-16), this study employed random-intercept cross-lagged panel models to examine within-person prospective associations among discrimination, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived family, peer, and teacher support. Higher-than-usual life satisfaction predicted lower subsequent perceived discrimination across all

Intersectional Discrimination and PrEP uSe Among Young Black Sexual Minority Individuals: The Importance of Black LGBTQ Communities and Social Support.

Intersectional stigma and discrimination have increasingly been recognized as impediments to the health and well-being of young Black sexual minority men (YBSMM) and transgender women (TW). However, little research has examined the relationship between intersectional discrimination and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) outcomes. This study with 283 YBSMM and TW examines the relationship between intersectional discrimination and current PrEP use and likelihood of future PrEP use. Path models were used to test associations between intersectional discrimination, resilience and social support, a

Examining how social class discrimination is associated with combustible tobacco use, nicotine vaping, and dual use among adolescents in California.

Adolescents who are disadvantaged in social class are twice as likely to use tobacco than their counterparts. Despite extensive research showing how social class is associated with using tobacco products, there is limited knowledge about the association between the discrimination that adolescents experience because they are disadvantaged in social class and their use of tobacco products. To provide new knowledge, this cross-sectional study examined the association between social class discrimination and tobacco use among 1,678 adolescents at two public high schools in California. Social class

The Relationship between Major and Everyday Discrimination and Suicide Thoughts and Behaviors among a Sample of Socially Anxious Job Seekers.

Discrimination predicts psychopathology, including suicide risk. Few studies have examined broad effects of major and everyday discrimination. This study examined whether major and everyday discrimination predicted suicide thoughts and behaviors in a diverse sample of socially anxious adults (N = 295). Exploratory analyses assessed the moderating role of identity and mediating role of depressive symptoms. Everyday discrimination predicted suicide thoughts and behaviors (p = .04). This relationship was reduced to non-significance after controlling for depression (p = .16). Identity characterist

Whole brain correlates of individual differences in skin conductance responses during discriminative fear conditioning to social cues.

Understanding the neural basis for individual differences in the skin conductance response (SCR) during discriminative fear conditioning may inform on our understanding of autonomic regulation in fear-related psychopathology. Previous region-of-interest (ROI) analyses have implicated the amygdala in regulating conditioned SCR, but whole brain analyses are lacking. This study examined correlations between individual differences in SCR during discriminative fear conditioning to social stimuli and neural activity throughout the brain, by using data from a large functional magnetic resonance imagi

Settings matter: Examining the association between social class discrimination in and out-of-school, tobacco use, and nicotine vaping among adolescents.

Despite widespread research on tobacco use and social class, there have been limited studies examining how social class discrimination relates to tobacco use. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study with 956 adolescents. Participants were disadvantaged in social class. Tobacco use included lifetime and past month use of combustible tobacco and nicotine vaping. Social class discrimination included multiple sources, such as teachers, classmates, teenagers, friends, and community members. Latent profile analyses revealed four subgroups of adolescents with experiences o

Immigration, Discrimination, and Resilience: Intersecting Social Factors Associated with Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety Among Ethiopian and Eritrean American Emerging Adults.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the burden and correlates of depression and anxiety among Ethiopian and Eritrean American emerging adults. African immigrants and their children constitute a large and growing proportion of the Black population but are largely overlooked in research focusing on either Black or immigrant youth. As they transition to adulthood, youth of Ethiopian and Eritrean origin must navigate a multitude of challenges including the impacts of traumatic immigration experiences, acculturation, racism, and discrimination. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey study wit

Social Class-Based Discrimination and Psychological Symptoms Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged College Students: The Moderated Mediation Role of Stress Mindset and Rumination.

Discrimination as a crucial stressor damages the mental health of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals through increased ruminative thinking. A "stress-is-enhancing" mindset may protect the mental health of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals under the pressures of perceived discrimination and rumination. This study examined the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of stress mindset in the relationship between perceived discrimination and psychological symptoms among socioeconomically disadvantaged college students. A total of 919 socioeconomically disadvantaged

Encircled by Class: Examining the Association Between Social Class Discrimination From Multiple Sources and the Variety of Substances Used Among Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Social class discrimination refers to interpersonal bias based on social class and can originate from multiple sources. Adolescence is a critical period for examining this phenomenon, as it is linked to important behavioral and health outcomes. Substance use is one such outcome and remains a major global public health concern. While social class discrimination has been linked to tobacco use, its association with adolescent substance use remains unexplored. To address this gap, we investigated the association between social class discrimination from peers, classmates, school perso
