Social hierarchies in sex-changing fish determine which fish will change sex, yet the complexities of hierarchy formation at the neurobehavioural level are still being unravelled. Here, we investigate the formation of social hierarchies within groups of New Zealand spotty wrasse, integrating behavioural observations with neural activation patterns upon social disruption. We find that dominance hierarchies form linearly based on size, with larger fish displaying more dominant behaviours and smaller fish displaying more submissive behaviours. Disruption of the social hierarchy induced rapid beha

Facial expressions are key to navigating social group life. The Power Asymmetry Hypothesis of Motivational Emancipation predicts that the type of social organization shapes the meaning of communicative displays in relation to an individual's dominance rank. The bared-teeth (BT) display represents one of the most widely observed communicative signals across primate species. Studies in macaques indicate that the BT display in despotic species is often performed unidirectionally, from low- to high-ranking individuals (signaling submission), whereas the BT display in egalitarian species is usually

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal behavioral style (IPBS) refers to the way in which someone behaves in social contact. IPBS affects the type and quality of different social interactions including the therapeutic relationship. The therapeutic relationship correlates with treatment outcome, IPBS possibly too. The direction of that relationship remains unclear.
AIM: To examine the predictive value of IPBS on treatment outcome in group treatment.
METHOD: 149 patients were divided in different types of IPBS: degree of affiliation (kindness vs. hostility), degree of dominance (dominant vs. submissive), q

Fear and avoidance of gaze are two features thought to be associated with problematic social anxiety. Avoidance of eye contact has been linked with such undesirable traits as deceptiveness, insincerity, and lower self-esteem. The Gaze Anxiety Rating Scale (GARS) is a self-report measure designed to assess gaze anxiety and avoidance, but its psychometric properties have only been assessed in one preliminary study. We further investigated psychometric properties of the GARS by assessing convergent and factorial validity. We obtained a two-factor solution: gaze anxiety and avoidance across situat

Dopamine (DA) plays significant roles in regulation of social behavior. In social groups of humans and other animals, social hierarchy exists, which is determined by several behavioral characteristics such as aggression and impulsivity as well as social affiliations. In this study, we investigated the effects of pharmacological blockade of DA D2 receptor on social hierarchy of Japanese macaque and mouse social groups. We found acute administration of the D2 antagonist, sulpiride, in socially housed Japanese macaques attenuated social dominance when the drug was given to high social class macaq

BACKGROUND: Mania is associated with social conflict, reduced social support, and reduced social interaction quality (Breyer et al., 2003; Coryell et al., 1998; Morriss et al., 2007). Chronic stress in interpersonal relationships is related to the worsening of mood symptoms (Kim et al., 2007), suggesting the importance of characterizing the mechanism of interpersonal relationship disruption in bipolar disorder. The current study was designed to investigate exaggerated dominance tendencies present in at-risk individuals (Gardner, 1982; Wilson and Price, 2006), which may represent one such mecha

Fear and defense are among the most fundamental survival behaviors and are profoundly influenced by the social environment in group-living animals. However, it remains poorly understood how social context-and particularly dominance hierarchy, a defining feature of many social species-modulates defensive strategies under naturalistic conditions. To address this question, we investigated the social modulation of innate fear in mice exposed to two ethologically relevant threats: a transient visual looming stimulus and a sustained predatory threat posed by a live rat. We found that social presence

Memories of winning experiences reinforce dominance hierarchies, yet mechanisms encoding these long-lasting "winning memories" remain unclear. Here, we introduce a combined Tube & Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) paradigm and applied fiber photometry, genetic manipulations, and optogenetics to characterize social competition between adult male mice. We found that initial victories trigger dopamine D2 receptor-mediated calcium activities of astrocytes in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and subsequent glutamate release. This mechanism enhances dopaminergic responses in mPFC neurons project

Male intrasexual competition has shaped the evolution of sexually dimorphic traits, influencing both physical and cognitive mechanisms for assessing physical dominance and formidability. While previous research has examined static visual cues such as height and upper body musculature to male formidability, the role of dynamic cues remains underexplored. We used 3D motion capture to investigate biomechanical markers that drive perceptions of male physical dominance. Fifty-two male participants' walking gaits were recorded, and their upper-body strength, anthropometric measures, and self-reporte

The enzyme steroid 5α-reductase 2 (5αR2) catalyzes the conversion of testosterone into the potent androgen 5α-dihydrotestosterone. Previous investigations showed that 5αR2 is expressed in key brain areas for emotional and socio-affective reactivity, yet the role of this enzyme in behavioral regulation remains mostly unknown. Here, we profiled the behavioral characteristics of 5αR2 heterozygous (HZ) and knockout (KO) mice, as compared with their wild-type (WT) littermates. While male 5αR2 KO mice displayed no overt alterations in motoric, sensory, information-processing and anxiety-related beha

Natural selection should favour parents that are able to adjust their offspring's life-history strategy and resource allocation in response to changing environmental and social conditions. Pathogens impose particularly strong and variable selective pressure on host life histories, and parental genes will benefit if offspring are appropriately primed to meet the immunological challenges ahead. Here, we investigated transgenerational immune priming by examining reproductive resource allocation by female mice in response to direct infection with Babesia microti prior to pregnancy. Female mice pre

Male CD-1 mice form linear social hierarchies and can rapidly reform them following social reorganization. Through tag-based sequencing in the medial amygdala (MeA), we identified several genes regulating cholinergic signaling, myelination, and thyroid signaling that rapidly shift expression 70 min after animals change social status. Here, we further characterize the expression patterns of individual genes within these pathways in both stable and reorganized hierarchies. We find that genes related to cholinergic signaling show higher expression in the MeA of dominant males in stable hierarchie

Two different types of social relationships exist in mammalian social systems: dominance relationships and social bondings. This article shows that both are crucial for the management of stress. The following general conclusions are derived: (1) In stable social systems, established dominance relationships result in predictable behaviour. As a consequence, low positions in the hierarchy do not necessarily lead to enhanced endocrine stress responses. Under conditions of instability, however, distinct increases in the activities of the pituitary-adrenocortical- and the sympathetic-adrenomedullar

Social hierarchy in the animal community is a structure of behavior relations when members of a social group vary in their ability to acquire resources in the presence of others. The aim of our study was to investigate social dominance effects on development of the reproduction function in male mice. Sperm quality, relative testis and epididymis weights were evaluated in male mice of PT and CBA/Lac inbred strains at 70 day of age after pairing throughout the 32 day period. The effect of social dominance on sperm quality was observed only in males of the CBA/Lac strain. The dominant males had h

Agonistic behavior features prominently in hypotheses that explain how social variation relates to ecological factors and phylogenetic constraints. Dominance systems vary along axes of despotism, tolerance, and nepotism, and comparative studies examine cross-species patterns in these classifications. To contribute to such studies, we present a comprehensive picture of agonistic behavior and dominance relationships in wild female blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis), an arboreal guenon, with data from 9 groups spanning 18 years. We assessed where blue monkeys fall along despotic, tolerant, and ne

The present experiments clarify sexual and social relationship factors related to the development of defensive burying behavior in rats. Rats were raised in isolation, or in a variety of pairs differing in sex, age or familiarity during the juvenile and post-juvenile period. In Experiment 1, decreased burying behavior was found in both male and female rats during the juvenile stage when they were reared in isolation, or with an adult female, or for males reared with a same-age female. In Experiment 2, female rats isolated during the juvenile stage who were reared after the juvenile stage with

Social and emotional problems have been implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). This paper reviews the facets of social processing in ED according to the NIMH Research and Domain Criteria (NIMH RDoC) 'Systems for Social Processes' framework. Embase, Medline, PsycInfo and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed articles published by March 2013. One-hundred and fifty four studies measuring constructs of: attachment, social communication, perception and understanding of self and others, and social dominance in people with ED, were identified. Eleven meta-ana

INTRODUCTION: Aging is associated with reduced accuracy in recognizing others' emotions, an ability that is important for maintaining social connectedness in later life. Laughter is a social signal with multiple functions, as it can facilitate social bonding but also convey negative social meanings, for example when directed at someone. In previous research we have shown that younger adults are able to classify spontaneously emitted joyful, schadenfreude, and tickling laughter above chance level, and that these laughter sounds differ according to the perceived dominance. Given evidence that af

As complex individualized behaviors in mice arise even when genes and environment are held constant, emerging social group structures should also depend on individual behavior. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis drives individual behavior and is involved in certain social behaviors. Would thus the emergence of social structure depend on adult-born neurons? To answer this question, we co-housed cohorts of female mice with intact and genetically diminished general adult neurogenesis in a large-scale automated tracking system for three months and analyzed the development of social behaviors over time

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents often care about their social status which may be influenced by various personality and behavioral characteristics. This study used a person-centered approach to examine intrapersonal (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, self-esteem) and interpersonal (i.e., aggression, prosocial behavior) factors associated with how adolescents are perceived by peers.
METHODS: Participants were 256 adolescents (61% of participants identified as male), ages 16-19, attending a 22-week quasi-military residential program. Self-report and peer-nomination data were collected.
RESULTS: Latent
