Social and environmental factors and atypical depression in old age.

This community-based epidemiological survey is concerned with relationships between social and environmental factors and atypical depression in a Finnish population aged 60 years or over. The occurrence of atypical depression was related to older age, widowed or divorced marital status, having moved during the previous few years, living in a small dwelling near the local population center, having neighbors living in the same building, living alone, being frequently alone, a low number of hobbies and many long-standing or current social stress factors. In addition, the atypical depressive perso

Social factors affecting clinical caseload in Italian good practice areas.

Italian statistics indicate that fewer people are living alone than in Great Britain. Psychiatric Case Register figures show that the treated prevalences are nearly half those found in British Case Register areas. The level of staffing in good practice areas like South-Verona or Trieste is at least similar and at times higher than British or American counterparts. The clinical caseload of Italian clinical teams is therefore lower. The Italian patients may have a greater social network's availability by the mere fact of living in the same household of relatives. It is hypothesized that these el

Social and environmental factors influencing contraceptive use among black adolescents.

In 1979 survey among sexually active unmarried black adolescents from Chicago found that 28 percent of the young women and 18 percent of the young men used a contraceptive at first intercourse. Statistically significant differences in such contraceptive use among teenage women were found for three social and environmental characteristics: social class, parents' marital status and neighborhood quality. Thus, 41 percent of the young women from the highest social class used contraceptives at first intercourse, but only 17 percent of those from the lowest class did so. The proportions were 35 perc

Factors associated with social frailty in older adults in Colombia.

OBJECTIVES: Social frailty (SF) has gained increasing attention in recent years. While several studies have examined SF among older adults living in the community, most have been conducted in specific countries, primarily in Asia, with limited research in Latin America. The main objective of this study was to identify the relationship between SF and demographic, health, and functional conditions among older adults in Colombia. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of the SABE Colombia study. Social frailty (SF) was assessed using the adapted HALFE Social Frailty Index. The main independ

Social and socioeconomic factors and cognitive outcomes in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Race and social and socioeconomic conditions are associated with disability outcomes in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Given that cognitive impairment is common in MS, social and structural factors may also relate to cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between social and socioeconomic factors and cognitive function in adults with MS and to determine whether these associations differ by race. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 274 adults with MS (average age 50.9 ± 11.9 years; 77.4% female; 72.3% White). Key social and socioeconomi

Social Factors, Age, and Health at Time of Dementia Diagnosis.

IMPORTANCE: A timely diagnosis is crucial in ensuring high-quality care for individuals with dementia. Comparing age and health status at the time of dementia diagnosis across population subgroups can provide insights into vulnerable groups that may experience delayed diagnosis and/or a poorer prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine how age and health at the time of dementia diagnosis vary across sociodemographic subgroups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationwide cross-sectional study of individuals with an incident dementia diagnosis from either specialist care or who were dispensed antide

Social factors related to participation among people with Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impacts participation in daily activities, affecting the quality of life of individuals living with PD. This study investigated the contribution of social factors, including social resources and social isolation, to participation in instrumental, leisure, and social activities among people with PD. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 86 community-dwelling adults with PD (Age: 65.02 ± 9.63yrs). Pearson cor

Risk factors of social anxiety in patients with essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors of social anxiety (SA) in essential tremor (ET) patients. METHODS: Motor, cognition, and SA were evaluated using the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Rating Scale (FTMTRS), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) for each subject. The potential risk factors of SA in ET were analyzed using univariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 80 ET patients and 85 healthy controls completed the evaluation. The LSAS evaluation showed that the prevalence of SA in the ET group was 48.8%, higher than that in controls (12.9%, P < 0.001). Fema

Social adjustment in in-patients with affective disorders: predictive factors.

We assessed social adjustment in 145 depressed in-patients using the self-reporting Social Adjustment Scale (42-item version) to evaluate the contribution of demographic and clinical variables and examine social functioning at different levels of depression. Our results indicate that the presence of a psychopathology in association with interpersonal sensitivity, hostility and perceived social support aspects -- and not the severity of current depressive symptoms -- were the most important factors affecting social adjustment. As expected, social disturbances are more pronounced in severe depre

Factors Associated With Diagnostic Delay in Axial Spondyloarthritis: Impact of Clinical Factors and Social Vulnerability.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) often experience significant delay between symptom onset and diagnosis for reasons that are incompletely understood. We investigated associations between demographic, medical, and socioeconomic factors and axSpA diagnostic delay. METHODS: We identified patients meeting modified New York criteria for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or 2009 Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society criteria for axSpA in the Mass General Brigham health care system between December 1990 and October 2021.
