Promoting a Sense of Belonging Among Care-Experienced Young People: Insights From a Scoping Review.

Care-experienced young people (CEYP)'s sense of belonging is challenged by systemic instability of frequent placement and support networks changes. Belonging is critical for well-being and identity development, however, there are no known reviews scoping the available information on CEYP's belonging development. This scoping review aimed to identify what features aid the development of CEYP's sense of belonging. JBI scoping review methodology guided the search for English qualitative studies on CEYP's belonging experiences. A framework analysis using Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems model (

Protective and Compensatory Effects of Group Identification on the Mental Health of People Living with HIV.

Despite persistent stigmatization of people living with HIV (PLHIV) across the globe, group identification among these individuals may serve to counteract the detrimental effect of prejudice and discrimination associated with the stigmatized identity. Drawing on resilience theory and social identity theory, this study examined how multiple dimensions of group identification (i.e., in-group ties, in-group affect, and centrality) function to buffer and neutralize the negative impact of HIV stigma. A total of 281 PLHIV were recruited from the only community-based public HIV clinic in Hong Kong to

Egalitarianism is not equality: Extending process-based approaches through culture, identity, and power.

This commentary supports the shift from outcome-based to process-based understandings of egalitarianism. However, it argues that focusing on intragroup mechanisms alone is insufficient. Drawing on social identity theory, cultural orientation, and structural inequality, it suggests that intergroup dynamics and broader power structures constrain egalitarian outcomes, helping explain why processes that regulate inequality rarely produce equality in more complex societies.

The cost of an expanding moral circle: After living abroad, outcasts matter more but loved ones matter less.

People tend to morally prioritize their extremely close others (loved ones; such as family, partners, or friends) while disregarding extremely distant others (societal outcasts; such as pariahs, villains, or criminals). Across seven primary and 15 supplemental studies, we document how multicultural experiences might alter this universal default through moral compression: the simultaneous expansion of moral concern toward societal outcasts and contraction away from loved ones, effectively "compressing" the outermost and innermost anchors of the moral circle closer toward each other. Double-edged swords? Collective identity and solidarity in the environment movement.

Perhaps by virtue of its theoretical slipperiness, collective identity is often hailed as an important feature of social movements for the role it plays in unifying activists and organizations, and so helping them to develop shared concerns and engage in collective action. However, this paper argues that collective identity is the result of group rather than movement level processes, and although it can unite activists within a single movement organization, it is not always beneficial for the broader social movement. Although movements consist of networks of activists and organizations that ha

The hypothesis of contact in nursing: a narrative review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In Social Psychology, in relation to the effects of contact, there are two theoretical strands apparently fighting against each other: to one side, the contact hypothesis of Allport according to which, the meeting between members of different groups can, if managed in favorable conditions, reduce prejudice, on the other side, the Social Identity Theory of Tajfel and Turner, according to which the comparison between people belonging to different groups may actually generate an attitude of ingroup favoritism and outgroup discrimination. The aim of this review was to analyze h

Considering the interconnected nature of social identities in neuroimaging research.

Considerable heterogeneity exists in the expression of complex human behaviors across the cognitive, personality and mental health domains. It is increasingly evident that individual variability in behavioral expression is substantially affected by sociodemographic factors that often interact with life experiences. Here, we formally address the urgent need to incorporate intersectional identities in neuroimaging studies of behavior, with a focus on research in mental health. We highlight how diverse sociodemographic factors influence the study of psychiatric conditions, focusing on how interac

Development of the social dimensions of health behaviour framework.

Despite rapid theoretical expansion in conceptualising individual and environmental processes, the examination of social processes associated with health behaviours has a less cohesive theoretical landscape. The purpose of this mapping review and content analysis was to develop a taxonomy of social dimensions applicable to health behaviours. Michie et al. (2014) 'ABC of Theories of Behaviour Change' text, which includes 83 behaviour change theories, was used as the data-set, whereby an iterative concurrent content analysis was undertaken with respect to all relational/interpersonal psychologic

Religious contestation and Islamophobia among Iranian communities residing in the Greater Toronto area and York region.

Religion is an omnipresent concern for the Iranian community residing in the Greater Toronto Area and York Region (GTA and YR). While the experience of Islamophobia appears to be a unidirectional attitude from the host onto the diasporic community, this research indicates the complexities of Canada's Muslim experience. According to this research, the Iranian Diasporas present an ingroup Islamophobia by expressing anger and hostility toward Iranian Muslim community members. In an attempt to set communal boundaries by restructuring one's ethnic identity, the historical and environmental factors

Discrimination and social identity processes predict impairment and dysfunction among heavy drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has linked discrimination to poorer health. Yet health risk behaviours such as heavy alcohol consumption are often targeted with stigmatising public health campaigns. The current study sought to establish the link between experiencing discrimination and health outcomes among heavy drinkers, with a focus on exploring the multiple social identity processes that might underpin this relationship. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 282 people who self-reported consuming alcohol above recommended guidelines. We measured discrimination experienced as a drinker, compon

When social identities intersect: understanding inequities in growth outcomes by religion- caste and religion-tribe as intersecting strata of social hierarchy for Muslim and Hindu children in India.

BACKGROUND: Minority social status determined by religion, caste and tribal group affiliations, are usually treated as independent dimensions of inequities in India. This masks relative privileges and disadvantages at the intersections of religion-caste and religion-tribal group affiliations, and their associations with population health disparities. METHODS: Our analysis was motivated by applications of the intersectionality framework in public health, which underlines how different systems of social stratification mutually inform relative access to material resources and social privilege, t

Gender differences in the effect of unemployment on psychological distress.

In this paper we examine whether unemployment has a differential impact on the expression of psychological distress among men and women. Based on the traditional centrality of the work role to men and the family role to women, we defined several key domains that might affect unemployed men and women differentially: family circumstances, concerns and worries about children and family; coping responses; social support and social integration; and the centrality of the work role. While the study population either were or hoped to be in the labor force and had dependent children, they varied in the

Proposing an identity-in-context framework for culturally responsive evaluation.

Evaluation exists within social, cultural, environmental, and economic contexts defined by human experience. Taking an identity-oriented, culturally responsive approach to evaluation highlights the consequences of evaluation and how they relate to the social reality and context of priority populations. This article presents a conceptual framework for culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) practice using identity as an orienting construct. The Identity-in-Context Framework (ICF) can help evaluators and practitioners be cognizant of cultural implications for practice and explore how identity int

Positive and negative valences of identities: Longitudinal associations of identity content valences with adaptive and maladaptive functioning among Japanese young adults.

Erikson's psychosocial developmental theory assumes that valence of one's identity (i.e., identity content valence) defined by positive and negative identity elements is important for understanding patterns of (mal)adaptation. However, previous empirical research on identity and (mal)adaptation has focused on how individuals deal with identity issues (e.g., exploration and commitment), while neglecting identity content valences. In contrast, this study assessed identity content valences in terms of positive and negative identity elements. Theoretically, identity content valences affect (mal)ad

"Why Am I the Way I Am?" Narrative Work in the Context of Stigmatized Identities.

There are particular complexities faced by people attempting to tell their stories in the context of social stigma, such as the hostility which often surrounds injecting drug use. In this article, we identify some of the distinct advantages of taking a narrative approach to understanding these complexities by exploring a single case study, across two life-history interviews, with "Jimmy," a young man with a history of social disadvantage, incarceration, and heroin dependence. Drawing on Miranda Fricker's notion of "hermeneutical injustice," we consider the effects of stigmatization on the soci

The group self.

Although people often tend to consider themselves and others as unique individuals, there are many situations in which they think, feel, and act primarily as group members. This can bring out the best in them, as when they are inspired to help fellow citizens in need, or the worst, as when they show hostility against others simply because they represent another religious or ethnic group. Understanding when and why the group self becomes more important than the individual self, and how this affects people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, can help to prevent and redirect unwelcome aspects of

Impacts of Sharing an Instructor's Religious Identity on Students in a Large-Enrollment Introductory Biology Course.

Stereotypes about scientists narrow how students relate to them and influence how students see themselves in science. However, sharing identities and interests of contemporary scientists enables students to see aspects of their possible selves in that role. Previous work has demonstrated positive impacts of scientist role models on students who share marginalized identities in society and STEM, though less work has addressed whether the same positive effect would occur if the shared identity is more common in a broader societal context. We address this question by exploring the impact of an in

Street soccer and homelessness: Exploring social identities, health, and well-being.

Membership in social and physical activity groups has the potential to help people with a range of physical and mental health challenges. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of members of a unique physical activity group: people who were formerly or currently homeless participating in a street soccer program in Western Canada. Ten participants in the Vancouver Street Soccer League (VSSL) were interviewed about the extent to which this program fostered a sense of community, social connectivity, and quality of life among people with experience of homelessness. Interviews wer

Advertising's new medium: human experience.

We live in a media-saturated world, where consumers are drowning in irrelevant messages delivered from the web, TV, radio, print, outdoor displays, and a proliferating array of mobile devices. Advertising strategies built on persuading through interruption, repetition, and brute ubiquity are increasingly ineffective. To win consumers' attention and trust, marketers must think less about what advertising says to its targets and more about what it does for them. Rayport outlines four domains of human experience: In the public sphere people move from one place or activity to another, both online

A comparison of students with learning disabilities to low achieving and higher achieving students on three dimensions of social competence.

Research continues to accumulate attesting to the fact that many children with learning disabilities are experiencing social difficulties in school. Nonetheless, it is also clear that achievement deficits, with or without the presence of a handicapping condition, are also related to social problems in the classroom. Several studies attempting to clarify the relative roles of handicapping condition and achievement in social adjustment have produced mixed results. The purpose of the present study was to clarify this issue further by examining the social differences between elementary school stud
