A contextual approach to experiential avoidance and social anxiety: evidence from an experimental interaction and daily interactions of people with social anxiety disorder.

Experiential avoidance (EA), the tendency to avoid internal, unwanted thoughts and feelings, is hypothesized to be a risk factor for social anxiety. Existing studies of experiential avoidance rely on trait measures with minimal contextual consideration. In two studies, we examined the association between experiential avoidance and anxiety within real-world social interactions. In the first study, we examined the effect of experiential avoidance on social anxiety in everyday life. For 2 weeks, 37 participants with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and 38 healthy controls provided reports of experie

Social Acceptance of Smart Glasses in Health Care: Model Evaluation Study of Anticipated Adoption and Social Interaction.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing interest in smart glasses, it is striking that they are not widespread among health care professionals. Previous research has identified issues related to social interactions involving the use of smart glasses in public settings, which may differ from those associated with their application in health care contexts. OBJECTIVE: Assuming that smart glasses mediate contact between the health care provider and patient, the objectives of this research are two-fold: (1) to develop an instrument that combines the adoption and mediation perspectives, and (2) to gain ins

Mapping the Social Interaction Architecture of Clinical Reasoning in Morning Report: A Mixed-Methods Social Network Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Morning Report (MR) is a workplace-based learning activity in which clinical reasoning develops through interaction among learners and clinical teachers. Although previous studies have examined the educational value of MR, less is known about how clinical reasoning is socially constructed through patterns of communication and participation. This study aimed to investigate the interactional architecture of MR using Mixed-Methods Social Network Analysis (MMSNA). METHODS: We conducted a qualitatively driven data transformation mixed-methods study using verbatim transcripts from 20

Impairments of social interaction in a valproic acid model in mice.

BACKGROUND: A rodent autism spectrum disorder (ASD) model based on prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is widely recognized as a prominent model. Social behavior in rodent ASD models has primarily been evaluated through a three-chamber approach test. However, in this study, we focused on social attention in the VPA model of ASD. METHODS: In male C57BL/6 J mice, attentional behaviors toward conspecifics were examined through reaching tasks around 9-11 weeks of age. On embryonic day 12.5, pregnant mice underwent a subcutaneous injection of 600 mg/kg VPA sodium salt dissolved in 0.9% saline

Gene-environment interaction counterbalances social impairment in mouse models of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive/restricted behaviors. Although gene-environment interactions may explain the heterogeneous etiology of ASD, it is still largely unknown how the gene-environment interaction affects behavioral symptoms and pathophysiology in ASD. To address these questions, we used Cntnap2 knockout mice (genetic factor, G) exposed to valproic acid during embryonic development (environmental factor, E) as a gene-environment interaction (G × E) model. Paradoxically, the social deficits obs

Reduced medial prefrontal responses to social interaction images in remitted depression.

CONTEXT: Major depressive disorder is associated with impairments in processing emotional stimuli, and residual impairments are observed during remission, possibly indicating trait vulnerability. Stimuli with social context represent a distinct class of emotional stimuli, which in healthy volunteers are associated with specific neural substrates but have not previously been studied relative to vulnerability to depression. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether individuals with remitted major depressive disorder had altered neuronal processing of social emotional stimuli. DESIGN: Cross-sectional desig

Social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) for outpatients with bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with bipolar disorder show social cognition deficits during both symptomatic and euthymic phases of the illness, partially independent of other cognitive dysfunctions and current mood. Previous studies in schizophrenia have revealed that social cognition is a modifiable domain. Social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) is an 18-week, manual-based, group treatment designed to improve social functioning by way of social cognition. METHOD: 37 outpatients with DSM-IV-TR bipolar and schizoaffective disorders were randomly assigned to treatment as usual (TAU)+SCIT (n=2

Aripiprazole improves social interaction in Taiwanese children with pervasive developmental disorder.

Aripiprazole, an atypical antipsychotic, is effective in children with psychosis and few adverse effects have been reported. However, little is known about the efficacy and safety of aripiprazole in the treatment of autistic or other pervasive developmental disorders. We report three children with pervasive developmental disorders who were treated with aripiprazole for associated behavioral syndromes. Aripiprazole significantly improved the social interaction of all three children. Furthermore, two patients also showed significant improvement in depression/anxiety syndromes. The outcomes achie

[Impairment of social interaction, coordination disorder, and hypersensitivity in Asperger's syndrome].

Asperger's syndrome is not accompanied with intellectual disability, however it has social impairments as well as autism and demonstrates failure to develop peer relationships according to each life stage. Social reciprocal behavior deficits are revealed typically during childhood. On the other hand, after school age these deficits are modified by environmental factors that may induce secondary disorders consequently. Hypersensitivity and coordination disorder, which are not included in diagnostic criteria for Asperger's syndrome, are often in presence. These symptoms are diminished and rarely

Rewarding Social Interaction in Rats Increases CaMKII in the Nucleus Accumbens.

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is known to be involved in the sensitized locomotor responses and drug-seeking behavior to psychostimulants. However, little is known about the contribution of CaMKII signaling in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in natural rewards such as social interaction. The present experiments explored the implication of CaMKII signaling in drug versus natural reward. In the NAc of rats expressing cocaine or social interaction conditioned place preference (CPP), αCaMKII activation was induced in those expressing social interaction but not cocaine CPP. In

Effects of prenatal exposure to temephos on behavior and social interaction.

UNLABELLED: The neurodevelopment period is susceptible to alterations by genetic and environmental factors, such as the exposure to organophosphates (OP). The OP is neurotoxic and has been associated with neurological diseases pathophysiology. The OP temephos is widely used against Aedes aegypti in Brazil's public health programs. PURPOSE: To evaluate behavioral effects of prenatal exposition to temephos in Wistar rats. METHODS: First, we divided pregnant females into groups: those who received temephos diluted in distilled water by gavage between gestational days 6-13 and those who received

On head lice and social interaction in archaic Andean coastal populations.

Archaic mummies from northern Chile were examined for the presence of Pediculus humanus capitis. The excellent preservation of mummies and louse nits/eggs permitted a study of the degree of head lice infestation. We studied 63 Chinchorro mummies (ca. 5000-3000 years B.P.) from the Arica-Camarones coast. An area of 2cm×2cm on each mummy's head was systematically inspected for louse nits/eggs. Hairs with nits/eggs and lice were collected and analyzed using optic and scanning electronic microscopy. About 79% (50/63) of the mummies resulted positive for pediculosis, with an average of 2.1nits/eggs

Social interaction experiences of adults with Moebius Syndrome: a focus group.

This focus group study explored the social interaction experiences and strategies of 12 adults with Moebius Syndrome, a rare congenital condition characterized by facial paralysis. Content analysis revealed five themes of social functioning: social engagement/disengagement; resilience/sensitivity; social support/stigma; being understood/misunderstood; and public awareness/lack of awareness of Moebius Syndrome. Participants used compensatory expressive strategies such as vocal tone, gestures, and humor. The combination of being unable to express oneself with the face, having a facial difference

The Double Meaning of Online Social Space: Three-Way Interactions Among Social Anxiety, Online Social Behavior, and Offline Social Behavior.

The present study aimed to investigate how online and offline social behavior interact with each other ultimately to affect the well-being of socially anxious adolescents. Based on previous studies, it was assumed that there might be three-way interactive effects among online social behavior, offline social behavior, and social anxiety regarding the relationship with well-being. To measure social anxiety, online and offline social behavior, and mental well-being, self-report questionnaires such as the Korean-Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, Korean version of the Relational Maintenance Beha

Exposure to virtual social interactions in the treatment of social anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

This randomized controlled trial investigated the efficacy of a stand-alone virtual reality exposure intervention comprising verbal interaction with virtual humans to target heterogeneous social fears in participants with social anxiety disorder. Sixty participants (Mage = 36.9 years; 63.3% women) diagnosed with social anxiety disorder were randomly assigned to individual virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), individual in vivo exposure therapy (iVET), or waiting-list. Multilevel regression analyses revealed that both treatment groups improved from pre-to postassessment on social anxiety sy

Hostility moderates the effects of social support and intimacy on blood pressure in daily social interactions.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine the role of hostility in moderating the effects of positive social interactions on ambulatory blood pressure (ABP). DESIGN: Participants (341 adults) completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and underwent ABP monitoring, assessed every 45 min during waking hours across 6 days. An electronic diary measuring mood and social interactions was completed at each ABP assessment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The dependent variables from the ABP monitor included systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate. RESULTS: Different patterns of ambu

Body size shapes average behaviour, social impact, and social responsiveness in agonistic interactions.

Social interactions shape behavioural phenotypes and fitness, and are therefore major drivers of evolution. However, the precise mechanisms through which behavioural dynamics mediate the evolutionary consequences of social interactions remain poorly understood. Plastic responses during social interactions ("social plasticity") arise through two causal pathways: individuals can elicit phenotypic change in their social partners ("social impact") and individuals can adjust their own phenotype to the phenotypes of others ("social responsiveness"). Crucially, functional links among average behaviou

Having versus not having social interactions in patients diagnosed with depression or social phobia and controls.

Humans need meaningful social interactions, but little is known about the consequences of not having them. We examined meaningful social interactions and the lack thereof in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) or social phobia (SP) and compared them to a control group (CG). Using event-sampling methodology, we sampled participants' everyday social behavior 6 times per day for 1 week in participants' natural environment. We investigated the quality and the proportion of meaningful social interactions (when they had meaningful social interactions) and degree of wishing for an

Artificial intelligence interaction is not equivalent to social interaction: Rethinking artificial intelligence-mediated digital exposure in early childhood.

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into children's daily environments challenges traditional approaches to evaluating digital exposure. Although existing research has primarily focused on screen time, AI-based interactions introduce qualitatively different dynamics that remain insufficiently conceptualized. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on digital media use and emerging evidence on AI-based interaction to propose a novel framework distinguishing AI engagement from traditional screen exposure. Findings indicate that traditional screen exposure
