The link between falls, social isolation and loneliness: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The chances of experiencing a fall among those aged 60 years and older increase as risk factors accumulate. In the last few decades, several studies have identified different risk factors for falls in older people, including the role of social isolation and loneliness. This systematic review provides an overview of published literature that analyzes the bidirectional relation between falls and social isolation or loneliness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two databases (PubMed and Europe PMC) were used to search for publications investigating the relationship between falls, social isolatio

Social isolation delays the positive effects of running on adult neurogenesis.

Social isolation can exacerbate the negative consequences of stress and increase the risk of developing psychopathology. However, the influence of living alone on experiences generally considered to be beneficial to the brain, such as physical exercise, remains unknown. We report here that individual housing precludes the positive influence of short-term running on adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus of rats and, in the presence of additional stress, suppresses the generation of new neurons. Individual housing also influenced corticosterone levels--runners in both housing conditions had elev

Social isolation and loneliness: differences between older rural and urban Manitobans.

The purpose of this paper was to identify predictors of social isolation and loneliness for very old rural and urban adults. With data from the 1996 Aging in Manitoba Study (N = 1,868; age range 72-104), separate multiple regression models were constructed for rural and urban sub-samples, using the life space index (LSI) to measure social isolation as one outcome, and a loneliness index created by the authors from a combination of items to measure loneliness as a second outcome. Different factors were found to predict the outcomes for the two sub-samples. The models with isolation as the outco

Post-weaning social isolation of rats leads to an abnormal gait.

The purpose of this study was to further characterize the phenotype of rats that have experienced prolonged postweaning social isolation, a paradigm that produces changes relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders. At weaning, male Wistar rats from three litters were housed socially (n = 12) or in isolation (n = 13) for 10 weeks. Isolated rats could see, hear and smell other rats. A sophisticated analysis of gait revealed that the stride duration was increased in isolates (12%, P = 0.0024) as a result of increased stance duration (18%, P = 0.0005), but there was no difference in vertical reaction

[Social isolation induces social avoidance in mice: the mediating role of the medial prefrontal cortex glutamatergic neurons].

OBJECTIVES: To investigate social isolation (SI)-induced abnormal behaviors and changes in neuronal activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice kept under normal conditions or SI mice housed in individual cages for 2 weeks were subjected to intracerebral microinjection of a control virus, a chemogenetic activation virus, or an optogenetic activation virus (n=8). The mice were assessed for behavioral changes and examined for neuronal changes in mPFC using c-fos immunofluorescence staining and co-staining with specific antibodies against CaMKIIα (for exc

Establishing a research advisory committee in addictions services with a focus on social needs and social isolation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders and unmet social needs (like housing instability and social isolation) are major contributors to U.S. morbidity and mortality. We, patients, staff and researchers, established a research advisory committee (RAC) in an addictions treatment setting to guide research and interventions based on lived-experience. METHODS: We employed community engaged outreach methods to recruit, train, and establish the RAC, and the 10-Step Framework for Continuous Patient-Engagement to advise research activities, and to initiate our own research. RESULTS: The RAC contributed

Relationship of social isolation with mental distress among older Korean Americans: The moderating role of social cohesion.

Social isolation has been associated with poor mental health outcomes, particularly for older immigrants who do not have a protective social environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of social isolation (living alone, marginal family ties and marginal friend ties) with mental distress and to examine the moderating role of social cohesion (family cohesion and community cohesion). We hypothesised that social isolation and social cohesion would be directly associated with mental distress and that social cohesion would buffer the influence of social isolation on me

Social Isolation in Low-Income Countries Among Young Females: A Review.

Social isolation constitutes a significant but under-researched determinant of well-being for young females in low-income countries. While extensive literature examines social isolation among older adults in high-income settings, the experiences of adolescent girls and young women in the world's poorest nations remain poorly understood. This narrative review synthesises qualitative and quantitative evidence published between January 2000 and December 2025 on social isolation among young females (aged 10-24 years) residing in low-income countries. Drawing on 47 studies from 15 countries, the re

Region-specific neural activity changes and hierarchical instability following social isolation.

Social hierarchy contributes to maintaining group stability and coordination; yet, how social isolation affects hierarchical dynamics remains poorly understood. Although social isolation is a potent psychosocial stressor, its influence on social rank, stability, and the underlying neural mechanisms has not been clearly delineated. We established two complementary tube-test-based behavioral paradigms to investigate how isolation modulates rank status, social stability, and competitive behaviors: a rank change model assessing pre- and post-isolation rank shifts and a daily rank-trace model captu

Adolescent social isolation and food restriction impairs feeding in female mice.

Preclinical animal models of eating disorders show a clear relationship between stress in the adolescent period and the development of dysfunctional coping strategies, including disordered eating. Much of this work, however, has focused on male mice despite the fact that eating disorders are predominantly observed in women. To this end, we assessed the impact of social isolation and food deprivation in adolescent female mice upon feeding and other coping behaviors. We found that social isolation, together with food restriction, caused alterations in activity levels and feeding consistent with

Genetic and phenotypic associations of social isolation and loneliness with sarcopenia.

Social isolation and loneliness are recognized risk factors for adverse aging outcomes, but their effects on sarcopenia remain understudied. This study investigated the independent and combined effects of social isolation and loneliness on the risk of incident sarcopenia in two large prospective cohorts: CHARLS (n = 8,856) and ELSA (n = 5,561), including participants aged 50 years and older free of sarcopenia at baseline. Sarcopenia was defined using AWGS2019 and the Revised European Consensus criteria. During mean follow-ups of 3.7 years (CHARLS) and 3.9 years (ELSA), 1,431 and 331 incident s

Social isolation and anxiety disorders during COVID-19: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review examines the relationship between prolonged social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and anxiety levels in adults, with specific focus on social anxiety. It highlights that enforced distancing measures like lockdowns and reduced social contact significantly contributed to a global rise in psychological distress and anxiety disorders. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize recent evidence on how social isolation influenced anxiety levels in the general adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODOLOGY: This study followed a qualitative systematic review desi
