Socially Learned Attitude Change is not reduced in Medicated Patients with Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is often associated with distinctive or odd social behaviours. Previous work suggests this could be due to a general reduction in conformity; however, this work only assessed the tendency to publicly agree with others, which may involve a number of different mechanisms. In this study, we specifically investigated whether patients display a reduced tendency to adopt other people's opinions (socially learned attitude change). We administered a computerized conformity task, assumed to rely on reinforcement learning circuits, to 32 patients with schizophrenia or schizo-affective diso

What Makes Adolescents Defend Others Against Cyberhate? Insights From the Normative Social Behavior, Social Learning, and Planned Behavior Theories.

Most adolescents experience cyberhate primarily as bystanders. Understanding their behavior, particularly their defending behaviors, is crucial to mitigate the phenomenon and its negative effects. While prior studies have explored factors influencing these responses, further research is needed to understand how these factors interact within robust theoretical frameworks. To address this gap, this study examined adolescents' defending behaviors to cyberhate through three psychological theories: (1) the Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB; social norms); (2) Social Learning Theory (SLT; so

Social learning-based health literacy promotion on the self efficacy and social anxiety of adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Type 1 diabetes mellitus one of the biggest health concerns around the world, is difficult to manage during adolescence. Among the non-medical methods of controlling this disease is empowerment through self-efficacy. Poor self-efficacy leads to social anxiety and ultimately deficiencies in diabetes. There is also a correlation among health literacy, self-efficacy, and social anxiety. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the impact of a literacy promotion training program based on social learning theory on the self-efficacy and social anxiety of adolescents with T

Social emotional learning and autonomic regulation enhance social connectedness in female adolescents with extensive exposure to adverse childhood experiences.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with social isolation, a known contributor to diminishing mental health with consequences for adolescent development. We evaluated effects of the SKY Schools program, which combines social emotional learning (SEL) with training in autonomic regulation (breathwork), on social connectedness (SC) in female Latinx adolescents with high ACEs, a group particularly vulnerable to ACEs effects. In this longitudinal study, female Latinx students (N = 174, 14-18 years; M = 14.97; SD = 0.97) in two Southern California high schools with high (≥4) and low

Social behavioral profiling by unsupervised deep learning reveals a stimulative effect of dopamine D3 agonists on zebrafish sociality.

It has been a major challenge to systematically evaluate and compare how pharmacological perturbations influence social behavioral outcomes. Although some pharmacological agents are known to alter social behavior, precise description and quantification of such effects have proven difficult. We developed a scalable social behavioral assay for zebrafish named ZeChat based on unsupervised deep learning to characterize sociality at high resolution. High-dimensional and dynamic social behavioral phenotypes are automatically classified using this method. By screening a neuroactive compound library,

Machine learning classification of schizophrenia and social anhedonia based on facial expressions.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is characterized by deficits in emotional expression, with facial expressions serving as potential markers for diagnosis. Leveraging machine learning and computerized facial analysis, this study aimed to identify facial expression features in patients with SCZ and individuals with high social anhedonia (SocAnh), construct an explainable classification model, and explore the associations between facial features and negative symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: Emotional expressions of 2 samples comprising 32 patients with SCZ and 34 Health controls (HC), and 5

Infants' individual sensitivity to saliency shapes early word learning in social interaction.

In this paper, we conducted an extended analysis of an existing eye-tracking study (Wildt, 2023) investigating how infants' individual sensitivity to saliency shapes early word learning in social interaction. In a first phase of the study, 10-month-old infants participated in a saliency test for their attention. We used existing baseline data but applied a new analysis approach to model infants' attentional profiles-high and low preference group for salient stimuli. Afterwards, infants were exposed to the label of the referent and then participated in one of the two conditions of exploring it:

Social learning in predators: Indirect effects let novel prey exclude familiar prey.

Predation is a fundamental ecological process. Social learning by predators is ubiquitous. However, social learning is not incorporated into most ecological theories of predator-prey dynamics. We report how social learning changes results of classic one-predator, two-prey models. In our study, one prey (familiar) can be innately exploited by any predator. The other prey (novel) can only be exploited by predators that have learned how to consume it (i.e., informed predators). Social learning converts naïve predators into informed predators via mass action. This governs exploitation of the novel

Electrophysiological investigation of long-term threat discrimination learning in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Fear extinction deficits and spread of fear to benign stimuli are thought to be key factors in social anxiety disorder (SAD), potentially explaining how fear generalizes to various social situations. The late positive potential (LPP) is an event-related potential component that is sensitive to altered emotional processing in anxiety and fear-related disorders. In SAD, (1) the influence of fear conditioning on the LPP and (2) conditioning, extinction and recall using disorder-relevant stimuli have hardly been studied so far. METHODS: Participants with social anxiety disorder (SAD,

Less fidelity, more reciprocity: Rethinking implementation values for social-emotional learning programs.

Implementation values naturally operate in tension. School psychologists are called to manage the tension between evidence-based programs, the needs of their students, faculty, and leadership. One implementation value, fidelity, has emerged in schools as "first among many" as an indicator of a quality intervention. This conceptual article examines the risks of elevating fidelity in the implementation of social-emotional learning programs. Externally sourced content can provide useful background about stress and personal regulation, but curricula that are disconnected from cultural norms invite

Public opinion mining in social media about Ethiopian broadcasts using deep learning.

Now adays people express and share their opinions on various events on the internet thanks to social media. Opinion mining is the process of interpreting user-generated opinion data on social media. Aside from its lack of resources in opinion-mining tasks, Amharic presents numerous difficulties because of its complex structure and variety of dialects. Analyzing every comment written in Amharic is a challenging task. Significant advancements in opinion mining have been achieved using deep learning. An opinion-mining model was used in this study to classify user comments written in Amharic as po

Social learning from media: The need for a culturally diachronic developmental psychology.

Since the proliferation of television sets into households began over half a century ago there has been widespread interest in the impact that viewing has on young children's development. Such interest has grown with the increasing availability of smart phones and tablets. In this review we examine the literature documenting human social learning and how this learning is impacted when the instructing agent appears on a screen instead of face-to-face. We then explore the shifting nature of screen-based media, with a focus on the increasingly socio-normative manner information is portrayed. We d

Identifying HIV-related digital social influencers using an iterative deep learning approach.

OBJECTIVES: Community popular opinion leaders have played a critical role in HIV prevention interventions. However, it is often difficult to identify these 'HIV influencers' who are qualified and willing to promote HIV campaigns, especially online, because social media influencers change frequently. We sought to use an iterative deep learning framework to automatically discover HIV-related online social influencers. DESIGN AND METHOD: Out of 1.15 million Twitter users' data from March 2018 to March 2020, we extracted tweets from 1099 Twitter users who had mentioned the keywords 'HIV' or 'AIDS

Threat and safety reversal learning in social anxiety disorder - an fMRI study.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been linked to maladaptive forms of fear regulation, including flexibly distinguishing between learned threat and safety signals. Few studies have examined this in young, unmedicated SAD patients, including its neural basis. We aimed to characterize the neural, subjective, and autonomic correlates of reversal learning in patients with SAD and compare them to matched patients with major depressive disorder and to healthy control participants. All participants completed a threat-safety reversal learning task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Successf

Learning difficulties, social intelligence, and self-concept: connections to bully-victim problems.

Learning skills, social intelligence, and self-concept were related to each other and to bully-victim problems among fifth-grade children (79 boys and 62 girls, aged 11-12 years). In addition to exploring connections between single variables, a person-oriented approach was applied in order to analyze children's value patterns with respect to learning skills, self-concept, and social intelligence, and how these value patterns are related to bully-victim problems. Social intelligence was found to be positively correlated with learning skills, but negatively related to victimization. Bullying was

Neurodevelopmental schizophrenia: obstetric complications, birth weight, premorbid social withdrawal and learning disabilities.

Neurodevelopmental schizophrenia seems to be caused by impaired cerebral development and is supposed to be associated with obstetric complications (OCs), poor premorbid adjustment, schizotypal or schizoid personality traits and negative symptoms. In the present study, 36 schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients and their same-sex, healthy siblings were recruited. They were diagnosed according to DSM-III-R, using structured psychiatric interviews and a consensus of 2 psychiatrists. Information on OCs, birth weight, premorbid social and learning functioning was obtained from their mothers. The

Integrative metabolomics and machine learning identify biomarkers of adolescent social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders in adolescents but remains underdiagnosed due to the lack of objective diagnostic tools. This study aimed to identify serum metabolomic alterations in adolescent SAD patients and to develop an interpretable diagnostic model. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, serum samples were collected from 78 adolescents, including 42 drug-naive, first-episode SAD patients and 36 matched healthy controls. Untargeted metabolomic profiling was performed, and feature selection was conducted via least absolute shrinka

Mouse Model of Chronic Social Stress-Induced Excessive Pavlovian Aversion Learning-Memory.

Increased experience of aversive stimuli/events is a psychological-neurobiological state of major importance in psychiatry. It occurs commonly in generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depression. A sustained period of exposure to threat (chronic stressor) is a common risk factor, and a major symptom is generalized excessive perception of, and reactivity to, aversive stimuli. In rodents, Pavlovian aversion learning and memory (PAL, PAM), quantified in terms of the conditioned defensive behavior freezing, is an extensively studied behavioral paradigm, and well u

Learning positive social information reduces racial bias as indexed by N400 response.

The present study used EEG/ERPs to detect the activation of implicit stereotypical representations associated to other-race (OR) people and the modulation of such activation through the previous presentation of positive vs. neutral social information. Electrophysiological signals were recorded in 40 Italian Caucasian participants, unaware of the overall study's purpose. They were presented with 285 sentences that could either violate, non-violate (e.g., "the Roma girl was involved in a robbery) or be neutral with regard to stereotypical concepts concerning other-race people (e.g. Asians, Afric

Enhanced avoidance behavior in social anxiety: evidence from a probabilistic learning task.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social phobia is characterized by avoidance of feared social situations. Although avoidance is a central feature of social anxiety, few studies have examined avoidance learning. METHODS: We used a probabilistic instrumental learning paradigm where participants had to learn by trial and error which response led to the disappearance of a neutral or angry face. 20 high socially anxious and 20 non-socially anxious individuals with an average level of social anxiety learned to avoid an angry or a neutral face by choosing one of two cues. Each of the cues led to the disap
