Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has become a growing social and political concern in Bangladesh in recent years. The primary purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of survivors of CSA in Bangladesh. The study employs an exploratory qualitative research design, including 14 in-depth interviews with CSA survivors and their families from 11 sub-districts of Tangail District. This study reveals that survivors of CSA and their families experience numerous challenges, including social exclusion, marginalization, survivor blaming, and stigmatization in their communities following the incide

This study used Photovoice methods with young adults experiencing homelessness to collaboratively identify issues that are of greatest importance in an open-ended, exploratory, and inductive manner. Participants selected two concepts to focus their inquiry: freedom and prosperity. Within these concepts, participants discussed nature as a source of inspiration, a desire to better themselves and to change their situations, and passion for contributing to social change by exposing economic inequality and raising awareness about homelessness. These findings demonstrate that young people are keenly

PURPOSE: Cannabis use is common in adolescence and has been associated with negative health effects, and higher prevalence has been seen among marginalized youth. Research has not examined regular use or attitudes promoting use, particularly taking an approach grounded in intersectionality and minority stressors. The present study examines how regular cannabis use, perceptions of risk, approval from parents and friends, and peer norms of use differ across multiple social positions.
METHODS: 82,933 8th, 9th, and 11th grade students provided data on the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey, including

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh and other resource-constrained settings, a sub-group of transgender women (predominantly known as hijra in South Asia) encounter systemic marginalization, which unfairly predisposes them to health disadvantages. Although studies are beginning to illuminate the emerging burden of various communicable and non-communicable diseases, the global scholarship has predominantly confined these marginalized people within HIV/STI research framework. Our study explored the burden of diverse self-reported health problems and their underlying contexts among hijra in Dhaka, Banglade

Objectives: In recent years, there has been a mass migration of Eritreans (many seeking political asylum) into Israel after precarious irregular movement across international borders. This study qualitatively explores the structural barriers to family planning (i.e. contraceptive services) for Eritrean women in Israel that are rooted in their temporary legal status and the patchwork of family planning services.Design/Methods: From December 2012 to September 2013, we interviewed 25 key informants (NGO workers, researchers, Eritrean community activists, International NGO representatives and Mini

We present a social-historical perspective on the evolution of the voice-hearing phenomenon in Western society. Based upon a systematic search from a selection of nine databases, we trace the way hearing voices has been understood throughout the ages. Originally, hearing voices was considered a gifted talent for accessing the divine, but the progressive influence of monotheistic religion gradually condemned the practice to social marginalization. Later, the medical and psychiatric professions of secular society were instrumental in attaching stigma to both voice hearers and the phenomenon itse

Citizenship is an approach to supporting the social inclusion and participation in society of people with mental illnesses. It is receiving greater attention in community mental health discourse and literature in parallel with increased awareness of social determinants of health and concern over the continued marginalization of persons with mental illness in the United States. In this article, we review the definition and principles of our citizenship framework with attention to social participation and access to resources as well as rights and responsibilities that society confers on its memb

Previous research has suggested that adolescent peers influence behavior and provide social support during a critical developmental period, but few studies have addressed the antecedents of adolescent social networks. Research on the collateral consequences of incarceration has explored the implications of parental incarceration for children's behavioral problems, academic achievement, health, and housing stability, but not their social networks. Using network data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, I find that adolescents with recently incarcerated fathers are in socia

Amid the growth of addiction medicine randomized controlled trials (RCTs), scholars have begun examining participants' study experiences, highlighting facilitators and barriers to enrollment. However, this work can overlook the interplay between trial participation and social-structural dimensions among people with substance use disorders linked to the social nature of use, socioeconomic marginalization, and time demands of substance procurement and use. To effectively conduct RCTs with this unique population, it is necessary to examine the broader social context of study participation. We con

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately disrupts the daily lives of marginalized populations. Persons with substance use disorders are a particularly vulnerable population because of their unique social and health care needs. They face significant harm from both the pandemic itself and its social and economic consequences, including marginalization in health care and social systems. Hence, we discuss: (1) why persons with substance use disorders are at increased risk for infection with COVID-19 and a severe illness course; (2) anticipated adverse consequences of COVID-19 in persons with subst

Tailored tobacco cessation interventions focusing on minoritized communities are proliferating, but the extent to which these interventions address the needs of individuals with multiple minoritized social identities is unclear. We developed Empowered, Queer, Quitting, and Living (EQQUAL), an avatar-led digital smoking cessation intervention tailored for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and more (LGBTQIA+) young adults based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), via a multistage user-centered design process. The purpose was to evaluate feedbac

Negative perceptions of homelessness contribute to deficit models of practice, false notions of homogeneity, and marginalization. Wellbeing is a state of satisfaction with material, social, and human aspects of life and can be measured both objectively and subjectively. The study explored the meaning and experience of wellbeing in the everyday lives of 20 homeless participants through fieldwork and interviews. This study revealed that health contributed little to their overall perception of wellbeing. Keeping safe, being positive and feeling good, connecting with others, and the ability to par

Objectophilia (also known as objectum-sexuality) involves romantic and sexual attraction to specific objects. Objectophiles often develop deep and enduring emotional, romantic, and sexual relations with specific inanimate (concrete or abstract) objects such as trains, bridges, cars, or words. The determinants of objectophilia are poorly understood. The aim of this paper is to examine the determining factors of objectophilia. We examine four hypotheses about the determinants of objectophilia (pertaining to fetishism, synesthesia, cross-modal mental imagery, and autism) and argue that the most l

A single case study is presented from a feasibility study on social, psychic and neurobiological causes of violence in adolescence focusing on right-wing extremist and xenophobic youth. Results from psychological assessments and a structured biografical reconstruction are analyzed. The case illustrates a typical developmental path of a right-wing, xenophobic and violent male adolescent who experienced early and repeated exclusion and social marginalization. Results from psychological testing demonstrated additional developmental risk factors, such as disorganized attachment representations and

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified border control and disrupted international labor migration, but the complex consequences for migrant workers, including deepened marginalization and countervailing opportunities, have yet to receive sufficient scrutiny. Drawing on the case of Taiwan, this article examines how a host country reorganizes the multiple layers of physical and social borders for the purpose of sanitization, leading to an entanglement of mobilities and immobilities in migrant workers' lives. I illustrate how bordering practices have had uneven impacts on Filipino and Indonesian migra

Though there is evidence linking the history of colonialism and oppression of Indigenous people to the high rates of rape and child sexual abuse experienced by this population today, it is less understood how colonial processes, past and present, condition the decision to disclose or report victimization. Drawing on a survivorship storytelling study of rural Alaska Native survivors of child sexual abuse, this paper underscores the importance of centering colonialism in understanding the culture of silence surrounding sexual victimization among Indigenous people. Results show that reasons for n

BACKGROUND: Marginalized populations experience persistent health disparities that may be exacerbated by exposure to health misinformation. This systematic review aimed to identify interventions designed to address health misinformation in marginalized populations and characterize their effectiveness for changing health beliefs, intentions or behaviors.
METHODS: Medline, Embase, PsycINFO and Web of Science Core Collection were searched from inception to January 2025, with additional hand-searching of journals and citations. All studies were assessed for eligibility by two reviewers. Quantitat

Dr. Angela Y. Davis is a political activist, academician, and writer who has navigated and discussed issues of race, class, gender, and USA social policies across her 75 years of life. Davis's activism established her as the icon of a larger social movement and further related to her decision-making and legacy. Using psychobiographical methods, data were gathered through publicly available sources to explore Davis's personal, professional, and representational life, as well as understand Davis's lived experience through a socio-cultural-historical perspective. Two established theories, Social

Growing numbers of adolescents are marginalized by social factors beyond their control, leading to poor health outcomes for their families and future generations. Although the role of the social determinants of health has been recognized for many years, there is a gap in our knowledge about the strategies needed to address these factors in health promotion. Drawing on a review of literature on health promotion for marginalized and out-of-school adolescents, this paper highlights some urgent areas of focus for researchers and policy makers addressing adolescent health. Social determinants of he
