Exposure to and engagement with gambling marketing in social media: Reported impacts on moderate-risk and problem gamblers.

Digital advertising for gambling and specifically marketing via social media have increased in recent years, and the impact on vulnerable consumers, including moderate-risk and problem gamblers, is unknown. Social media promotions often fall outside of advertising restrictions and codes of conduct and may have an inequitable effect on susceptible gamblers. This study aimed to investigate recall of exposure to, and reported impact on gamblers of, gambling promotions and marketing content on social media, with a focus on vulnerable users currently experiencing gambling problems. Increasing tobacco quitline calls from pregnant african american women: the "one tiny reason to quit" social marketing campaign.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant African American women are at disproportionately high risk of premature birth and infant mortality, outcomes associated with cigarette smoking. Telephone-based, individual smoking cessation counseling has been shown to result in successful quit attempts in the general population and among pregnant women, but "quitlines" are underutilized. A social marketing campaign called One Tiny Reason to Quit (OTRTQ) promoted calling a quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW) to pregnant, African American women in Richmond, Virginia, in 2009 and was replicated there 2 years later. METHODS: The cam

Encouraging the installation of rollover protective structures in New York State: the design of a social marketing intervention.

AIMS: Increasing the percentage of rollover protective structure (ROPS) equipped tractors has been the focus of many agricultural safety campaigns. Traditionally efforts have attempted to persuade farmers through education or community awareness interventions. These efforts have lead to marginal change. In response, a social marketing approach was tested as a means for increasing interest in ROPS retrofitting in New York. METHODS: An initial phone survey was conducted with a random sample of New York farmers to identify a potential target population. Following target selection, in-depth inter

E-cigarette and Cannabis in Social Media Influencer Marketing and Its Effect on Adolescents: A Survey-Based Experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Micro-influencers (1000-100 000 followers) promote e-cigarettes alongside cannabis on social media. This study examined the association of exposure to such marketing with adolescent perceptions of e-cigarettes and micro-influencers. METHODS: In this 2023-2024 survey-based, in-class repeated-measures experiment, California adolescent e-cigarette and cannabis never-users (n = 1402; Mage = 17 [SD = 0.6]; 51.4% female, 41.7% Hispanic) were randomly shown three pairs of Instagram images featuring micro-influencers promoting: (1) e-cigarettes with cannabis (experimental group), (2) e-

The case for social marketing in gonorrhoea prevention: insights from sexual lifestyles in Glasgow genitourinary medicine clinic attendees.

We conducted a matched case-control study to investigate social factors associated with gonorrhoea acquisition among genitourinary (GU) medicine clinic attendees, designed to inform appropriate prevention strategies. Detailed social and behavioural data were elicited using a self-completed questionnaire. The effect sizes of these characteristics were quantified using univariate and multivariable conditional logistic regression in 53 cases and 106 matched controls. Homo-bisexual orientation was the strongest independent predictor of gonorrhoea acquisition (Adjusted odds ratio 31.1 (95% confiden

An Investigation of Influential Users in the Promotion and Marketing of Heated Tobacco Products on Instagram: A Social Network Analysis.

While an increasing body of the literature has documented the exposure to emerging tobacco products including heated tobacco products (HTPs) on social media, few studies have investigated the various stakeholders involved in the generation of promotional tobacco content. This study constructed a social network of Instagram users who posted IQOS content, a leading HTP brand, between 1 January and 5 April 2021 and identified users who positioned near the center of the network. We identified 4526 unique Instagram users who had created 19,951 IQOS-related posts during the study period. Nearly half

Using the social structure of markets as a framework for analyzing vaccination debates: The case of emergency polio vaccination.

The framework of the social structure of markets was used to analyze an online debate revolving around an emergency poliovirus vaccination campaign in Israel. Examination of a representative sample of 200 discussions revealed the activity of three parties: authoritative agents promoting vaccinations, alternative agents promoting anti-vaccination, both representing sellers, and the impartial agents, representing the customers-the general public deliberating whether to comply with vaccination or not. Both sellers interacted with consumers using mechanisms of luring and convincing. The authoritat

Sun-safe behaviours, personal risk, level of concern, and knowledge about cutaneous melanoma in italy: time for social marketing?

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cutaneous melanoma is increasing, although 80-95% of all deaths caused by melanoma can be avoided through protective behaviours. There is evidence that social marketing as an approach in public health can improve health-related behaviours and encourage sun-safe behaviours. METHODS: A multicentre survey was conducted to collect and compare data about cutaneous melanoma risk, knowledge, concern, and protective behaviours across Northern, Central, and Southern Italy, and explore how these data could potentially inform a social marketing intervention to improve sun-

Remediated marketing: leveraging computer vision and rule-based classification models to detect e-cigarette warning labels across social media.

Big Tobacco and other stakeholders, such as vape shops and smaller e-cigarette manufacturers, have adapted traditional tobacco marketing techniques to digital platforms. Warning labels are essential for informing consumers about the potential harms of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes. However, in a rapidly changing digital landscape, social media platform policies often lag behind, leaving digital marketing largely unchecked. This has allowed Big Tobacco to modernize traditional cigarette marketing in the digital sphere with e-cigarettes, a phenomenon we term 'remediated marketing'. Without

Effects of a community-based social marketing campaign on the social support, self-efficacy, and physical activity of elderly people: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The global elderly population is growing rapidly, and physical inactivity among the elderly remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Implementing structured, theory-driven behavior change strategies that foster social support is essential for successful health promotion among the elderly. This study aims to evaluate whether a community-based social marketing campaign can effectively enhance physical activity, social support, and self-efficacy in the elderly. METHODS: This study is a parallel cluster-randomized controlled trial protocol. A three-month community-based soci

My feed is what I eat? A qualitative study on adolescents' awareness and appreciation of food marketing on social media.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents spend much of their time online and hence are exposed to a lot of non-core (energy-dense, nutrient-poor) social media food marketing (SMFM). This may influence their dietary choices and health. This present study aimed to investigate adolescents' perceptions towards SMFM; that is, their recognition and appreciation of SMFM. METHODS: Semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with Dutch adolescents aged 13-16 years (n = 16), on Skype. Examples of food promotions on Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube were discussed with adolescents. RESULTS: Adolescents'

Beyond Body Weight: Design and Validation of Psycho-Behavioural Living and Eating for Health Segments (LEHS) Profiles for Social Marketing.

Obesity, sedentary behaviour, and poor dietary habits amongst young adults are growing concerns, with this age group being in a worse state of health and nutrition than adolescents and adults. This paper presents the procedures for establishing a new instrument for defining behaviours in relation to healthy lifestyle and food choices amongst young adults (Living and Eating for Health Segments: LEHS). The aim of this paper is to outline the instrument design protocol for external validation and to permit replication in other studies. The instrument design process used a multi-step social market

Impact of a passive social marketing intervention in community pharmacies on oral contraceptive and condom sales: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Almost 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unwanted or mistimed. Notably, just over one-half of unintended pregnancies occurred when birth control was being used, suggesting inappropriate or poor use or contraceptive failure. About two-thirds of all women who are of reproductive age use contraceptives, and oral hormonal contraceptives remain the most common contraceptive method. Often, contraceptive products are obtained in community pharmacies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a pharmacy-based intervention would impact sales of contraceptive products in p
