Unpacking Indigenous Social Mobility: Entrepreneurs, Social Networks, and Connections to Culture.

In settler societies, upward social mobility by Indigenous people is seen in the growth of successful professional and entrepreneurial classes where both wealth creation and social power are significant resources. Yet, public and academic discourses perpetuate the belief that social mobility impacts negatively on Indigenous people by placing cultural identity in conflict with capitalist business practices. Using data from an international comparison consisting of interviews with 220 Indigenous entrepreneurs in research sites across three countries, this article shows that the belief is unfound

Bridging maladaptive social self-beliefs and social anxiety: a network perspective.

The Clark and Wells (1995) model of social anxiety disorder postulates that three types of maladaptive social self-beliefs (high standard, conditional, and unconditional beliefs) play a crucial role in the development of fear and avoidance of social-evaluative situations-i.e., the hallmark symptoms of social anxiety disorder. In this project, we examined associations between the three types of maladaptive social self-beliefs and fear and avoidance of social-evaluative situations in a nonclinical community sample (n = 389). We used network analysis to estimate functional relations among aspects

The social support and social network characteristics of smokers in methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown social support and social network variables to be important factors in smoking cessation treatment. Tobacco use is highly prevalent among individuals in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). However, smoking cessation treatment outcomes in this vulnerable subpopulation have been poor and social support and social network variables may contribute. METHODS: The current study examined the social support and social network characteristics of 151 MMT smokers involved in a randomized clinical trial of smoking cessation treatments. Participants were 50% women

Social networks and adult social identities: profiles and correlates of support and rejection.

The growth of interest in social networks has underscored the need for integrative analyses of network dimensions. A three-pronged strategy to achieve this objective was pursued in a study of 261 married women nurses. First, network variables related to important adult social identities were differentiated. Factor analyses revealed four network interaction factors: work support, work rejection, general support, and general rejection. An additional factor analysis differentiated work associates from nonwork network members. Second, cluster analysis of these factor scores identified five differe

Early insight into social network structure predicts climbing the social ladder.

While occupying an influential position within one's social network brings many advantages, it is unknown how certain individuals rise in social prominence. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset that tracks an entirely new network of college freshmen (N = 187), we test whether "climbing the social ladder" depends on knowing how other people are connected to each other. Those who ultimately come to occupy the most influential positions exhibit early and accurate representations of their network's general, abstract structure (i.e., who belongs to which communities and cliques). In contrast, detailed

Neural tracking of social hierarchies in adolescents' real-world social networks.

In the current study, we combined sociometric nominations and neuroimaging techniques to examine adolescents' neural tracking of peers from their real-world social network that varied in social preferences and popularity. Adolescent participants from an entire school district (N = 873) completed peer sociometric nominations of their grade at school, and a subset of participants (N = 117, Mage = 13.59 years) completed a neuroimaging task in which they viewed peer faces from their social networks. We revealed two neural processes by which adolescents track social preference: (1) the fusiform fac

Bridging symptoms between problematic social networking and generalized anxiety in adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Problematic social networking site use (PSNSU) may arise as a coping response to generalized anxiety and, in turn, intensify anxiety symptoms, creating a bidirectional cycle that poses increased risks for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents. However, the symptom-level mechanisms underlying these intertwined associations remain unclear. To address this gap, the present study applied a symptom network analysis approach to examine. METHODS: A total of 5,938 adolescents in Guangxi Province, China, completed an e-questionnaire and validated measures of generalized anxiety

Unauthentic Information About Celiac Disease on Social Networking Pages: Is It a Matter of Concern in Celiac Disease Management?

BACKGROUND: Facebook (FB) is the most popular online networking platform. Many celiac disease Facebook (CD-FB) pages spread awareness about celiac disease (CD). To get the latest information, patients with CD frequently follow such pages. However, little is known about whether such pages provide authentic and reliable information. AIMS: This study aims to investigate whether CD-FB pages spread misleading information to patients with CD. METHODS: On the Facebook social networking platform, CD-FB pages created in three celiac-prevalent countries (Italy, the USA, and India) were explored using

Useful or not? The discussion of traditional Chinese medicine to treat COVID-19 on a Chinese social networking site.

The use of traditional medicine is a global phenomenon, and the WHO advocated its appropriate integration into modern healthcare systems. However, there is a hot debate about the legitimacy of traditional medicine among the general public. Here, we investigated the debate in the Chinese digital context by analysing 1954 responses related to 100 questions about traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment against COVID-19 on the Zhihu platform. Attitude function theory was applied to understand the reasons underlying public attitudes. Results showed that Zhihu users generally held a supportive a

Dataset on the learning performance of ECDL digital skills of undergraduate students for comparing educational gaming, gamification and social networking.

This paper reports data about the learning performance of students using four different motivational tools: an educational game, a gamified plugin, a social networking website and a gamified social networking website. It also reports a control group. The data pertain to 379 students of an undergraduate course that covers basic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills in Spain. Data corresponds to different learning modules of the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) initiative. The data include variables of four pre-test scores, four post-test scores and a final examination. I

The assessment of cyberstalking: an expanded examination including social networking, attachment, jealousy, and anger in relation to violence and abuse.

Because the first antistalking statute was enacted in California in 1990, stalking research has been expanded immensely, yet been largely confined to exploring traditional pursuit tactics. This study instead examined the prevalence and correlates of cyberstalking behaviors while examining the phenomenon in a more inclusive manner than previous studies focusing on cyberstalking by including social networking avenues. In addition to a measure assessing cyberstalking-related behaviors, questionnaires assessing pathological aspects of personality, including attachment style, interpersonal jealousy

Using information technology and social networking for recruitment of research participants: experience from an exploratory study of pediatric Klinefelter syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recruiting pediatric samples for research may be challenging due to parental mistrust of the research process, privacy concerns, and family time constraints. Recruitment of children with chronic and genetic conditions may further complicate the enrollment process. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we describe the methodological challenges of recruiting children for research and provide an exemplar of how the use of information technology (IT) strategies with social networking may improve access to difficult-to-reach pediatric research participants. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional

Feasibility of using social networking technologies for health research among men who have sex with men: a mixed methods study.

This study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of using social networking as a health research platform among men who have sex with men (MSM). Fifty-five MSM (primarily African American and Latino) were invited to join a "secret" group on the social networking website, Facebook. Peer leaders, trained in health education, posted health-related content to groups. The study and analysis used mixed (qualitative and quantitative) methods. Facebook conversations were thematically analyzed. Latino and African American participants voluntarily used social networking to discuss health-rela

"I Don't Know What Fun Is": Examining the Intersection of Social Capital, Social Networks, and Social Recovery.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to understand how people with problematic drug use access positive social capital. Social capital is defined as relations that provide valuable resources to individuals through participation in social networks. People with low socioeconomic status remain at a disadvantage for acquiring positive social capital, a component of recovery capital. The concept of social recovery emphasises the relational processes of recovery. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: In-depth life history data were collected from 29 individuals who used heroin, cocaine, crack, or methamphe

Social Isolation or Autistic Homophily: An Exploration of the Social Networks of Autistic College Students.

Our understanding of autistic socialization using social network analysis has focused on autistic children and understanding support systems. The purpose of this study is to examine autistic friendship networks in adulthood without focusing on support systems. We broadly recruited autistic and nonautistic college students (n = 592 students). Students provided ego-network information, including demographics, satisfaction with their social relationships, and perceptions of their friends (e.g. perceived neurotype and demographics). Autistic college students reported similar network structure metr

Social Mycology: Using Social Media Networks in the Management of Aspergillosis and Other Mycoses.

Online social media networks are an integral part of modern life. Microblogging sites such as Twitter have hundreds of millions of active users globally and have been enthusiastically adopted by many in the medical profession. For advancing a relatively neglected field such as fungal infection, this can be especially advantageous. Education, research networking, case discussions and public and patient engagement can all be greatly enhanced through the use of social media networks. This review highlights the ways in which this can work successfully in the case of aspergillosis and fungal infect
