Neural responses to induced emotion and response to social threat in intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intermittent explosive disorder (IED) are reported to exhibit amygdala (AMYG) hyper-activation to anger faces during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).  However, it remains unknown if emotional experience is different in study participants with IED compared with healthy controls (HC).  Thus, we examined the comparative effect of pleasant and unpleasant IAPS pictures in IED and HC individuals. METHOD: Eighty study participants (40 IED and 40 HC) underwent fMRI scanning while viewing blocks of angry and happy faces and while viewing blocks of pleasant and

Interpretation biases in social anxiety: response generation, response selection, and self-appraisals.

Cognitive theories propose that the resolution of ambiguity is related to the maintenance of social anxiety. A sentence completion task was used to examine how individuals high (n=26) and low (n=23) in social anxiety resolve ambiguous social sentences. Individuals were asked to generate as many responses as came to mind for each sentence, and then to endorse the response that best completes the sentence. Total responses, first responses, and endorsed responses were examined separately. Results indicated that high anxious individuals had more negative and anxious responses and fewer positive an

Measuring behavioral responses to a social stressor: Does the Social Performance Rating Scale have utility beyond social anxiety disorder?

The observer-rated Social Performance Rating Scale (SPRS) indexes anxious behaviors exhibited in social contexts. Although the SPRS has been used almost exclusively to study social anxiety disorder (SAD), other emotional disorders are also characterized by heightened responses to social stressors, hinting that the SPRS could serve as a transdiagnostic state measure of behavioral anxiety. To explore this possibility, adults with generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder (n = 105) and adults with no psychopathology (n = 35) delivered a speech to a committee of mock behavioral exp

Do Hostile School Environments Promote Social Deviance by Shaping Neural Responses to Social Exclusion?

The present study examined adolescents' neural responses to social exclusion as a mediator of past exposure to a hostile school environment (HSE) and later social deviance, and whether family connectedness buffered these associations. Participants (166 Mexican-origin adolescents, 54.4% female) reported on their HSE exposure and family connectedness across Grades 9-11. Six months later, neural responses to social exclusion were measured. Finally, social deviance was self-reported in Grades 9 and 12. The HSE-social deviance link was mediated by greater reactivity to social deviance in subgenual

Social Reward Responsiveness Moderates the Association between Perceived Social Competence and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents.

Adolescence is an important social development period that is also marked by increased rates of depression. Positive social interactions are crucial for cultivating social skills and functioning, also known as social competence, and lower social competence has been related to greater depressive symptoms. Still, little is known about factors that impact why some adolescents with low self-perceptions of social competence develop depression while others do not. The present study addressed this gap by examining neural processing of social rewards as a potential moderator of the association between

The Social Risk ACTIONS Framework: Characterizing Responses to Social Risks by Health Care Delivery Organizations.

Social risks refer to individuals' social and economic conditions shaped by underlying social determinants of health. Health care delivery organizations increasingly screen patients for social risks given their potential impact on health outcomes. However, it can be challenging to meaningfully address patients' needs. Existing frameworks do not comprehensively describe and classify ways in which health care delivery organizations can address social risks after screening. Addressing this gap, the authors developed the Social Risk ACTIONS framework (Actionability Characteristics To Inform Organi

Minimal social context decouples affective response modalities.

Emotions often occur within social interactions where affective cues are partly accessible or inferable by others. This raises theorethical questions regarding how and to what degree social context modulates subjective, physiological and behavioural affective responses, as well as their coherence, which remain points of tension in emotion research. To investigate this, we measured subjective affective ratings, autonomic sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, and facial behaviour while participants completed an emotion-induction task. In the social-context condition (but not control), partic

The Social Response to Survivors of Attempted Intimate Partner Homicide.

Research on women survivors of attempted intimate partner homicide and their postattack experiences, including the response from family, friends, and institutions like police and welfare agencies, is limited. Using the disenfranchized grief framework, this study explores survivors' perceptions of the social response to their experiences. Thirteen participants were interviewed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, yielding four themes: (a) detachment and disregard; (b) disbelief and victim blame; (c) lack of institutional support, and (d) marginality in the legal process. The study fi

Implicit theories shape responses to social-evaluative threat.

It is important to understand factors that make one more or less vulnerable to the harmful effects of social threat. This study focuses on the role of implicit theories (also referred to as mindsets) in shaping responses to a potent form of social threat, namely social-evaluative threat (SET). 124 individuals participated in an experimental study in which they were induced to have an incremental theory or an entity theory about their social skills. Next, they were exposed to SET in the laboratory. Psychological and physiological responses were assessed including social self-esteem, rumination,

Social stress induces autoimmune responses against the brain.

Clinical studies have revealed a high comorbidity between autoimmune diseases and psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the mechanisms connecting autoimmunity and depression remain unclear. Here, we aim to identify the processes by which stress impacts the adaptive immune system and the implications of such responses to depression. To examine this relationship, we analyzed antibody responses and autoimmunity in the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model in mice, and in clinical samples from patients with MDD. We show that socially stressed mice have elev

Utilising social media within incident response programmes.

Humans are social creatures that learn from observing others. Until this century, the reach of social learning was confined to small groups or locales. However, the pervasive adoption of social media platforms has provided the means to augment social learning and empower virtual groups by transcending geographic and time boundaries. The broad adoption of social media across all demographic groups gives augmented social learning potentially broad applications, including within the realm of incident response. This article will discuss how augmented social learning can be a powerful tool to manag

Saliency modulates behavioral strategies in response to social comparison.

Social comparison has been found to affect humans in many aspects including outcome evaluation, emotional reaction, and decision-making. Here, two experiments were conducted using a gambling task involving monetary gains and losses (absolute outcome: win/loss), whereby participants' outcome was either better or worse than the outcome of a paired player (relative outcome: better/worse). The results of experiment 1 showed that participants switched more frequently after absolute losses compared with absolute gains, consistent with previous studies showing a win-stay lose-shift heuristic in repea

Considering the context: social factors in responses to drugs in humans.

BACKGROUND: Drugs are typically used in social settings. Here, we consider two factors that may contribute to this observation: (i) the presence of other people may enhance the positive mood effects of a drug, and conversely, (ii) drugs may enhance the value of social stimuli. METHODS: We review evidence from controlled laboratory studies with human volunteers, which investigated either of these interactions between social factors and responses to drugs. We examine the bidirectional effects of social stimuli and single doses of alcohol, stimulants, opioids, and cannabis. RESULTS: All four cl

Neural response to the observable self in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Distorted images of the observable self are considered crucial in the development and maintenance of social anxiety. We generated an experimental situation in which participants viewed themselves from an observer's perspective when exposed to scrutiny and evaluation by others. Method Twenty patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and 20 control subjects were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the public exposure of pre-recorded videos in which they were each shown performing a verbal task. The examiners acted as the audience in the experiment and

Cardiovascular responses to mental activation of social support schemas.

While perceived social support appears to be associated with buffered cardiovascular reactivity to short-term stressors, its impact on cardiovascular recovery is less clear. This relationship might be affected by trait hostility, with hostile individuals benefiting less from social support. However, despite the possibility that support provision might enhance well-being, limited empirical work has manipulated this in a laboratory context. The present study sought to investigate whether mentally activated support provision and support receipt influenced cardiovascular recovery from cognitive st

Neuroendocrine changes and natriuresis in response to social stress in rats.

Sympathetic activation is detected by the tachycardic, hypertensive and hyperthermic responses during social conflicts in rodents and primates. Sympathetic nervous system activation promoting sodium retention has long been recognized to play a significant role in the development and maintenance of salt-sensitive hypertension. The objective was to investigate neuroendocrine activation and renal sodium excretion in response to chronic social stress. Male Wistar rats were subjected to social stress in accordance with the resident-intruder paradigm. Intruder rats were subjected to social confronta

After the wave-the Centrelink Social Work response offshore.

Communities worldwide were affected by the tsunamis that struck a dozen Indian Ocean nations on 26 December 2004. More than 300,000 people were killed or left missing as a result of the tragedy. The Australian Government played a key role in the disaster response overseas and in Australia. As part of a whole-of-government response to the crisis, eight Centrelink Social Workers were deployed to tsunami-affected areas for two weeks after the initial disaster to provide personal support to Australian victims and their families. This paper presents the service delivery framework adopted offshore a

Self-reported and actual physiological responses in social phobia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to compare physiological reactions and self-reports of bodily sensations for social phobics, clinically anxious and non-anxious controls across four tasks. DESIGN: A within-group design was used in which each participant took part in four tasks. Two were designed to be demanding, either physically (riding an exercise bicycle) or mentally (mental arithmetic task), while two, a mental imagery task (personally relevant situation) and a social conversation, were designed specifically to be anxiety provoking. METHODS: Of the 54 participants, 18 were ge

[Psychopathological mechanisms of socially dangerous acts and the problem of responsibility].

The authors discuss the problems of forensic-psychiatric expert examination related to the responsibility of persons suffering from different mental disorders. In addition to the assessment of the clinical picture of a mental disease, it is necessary to take into consideration (as fully as possible) the genesis and character of the committed socially dangerous action (SDA). For this purpose it is recommended that the concept of the psychopathological mechanisms of SDA worded by the authors and their classification be made use of. The establishment in a mental patient of one of the distinguishe

Hostility, anger expression, cardiovascular responsivity, and social support.

Sixty male subjects completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (Ho), the anger-in, anger-out, and anger-discuss measures of anger expression from the Framingham Heart Study, and a measure of social support. Subjects also performed two challenging tasks while systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and pulse rate (PR) were monitored. Neither SBP, DBP, nor PR responses to the tasks were found to be related to the Ho or anger expression scales. Quality of social support was not found to be related to the Ho scale but was related negatively to the anger-discuss scale. The mor
