Development of social convoys: Trajectories of convoy structure and composition from childhood through adulthood.

Personal networks undergo changes in structure and composition throughout the life span, adapting to developmental transitions and changing circumstances in a dynamic way. This study examines stability and change in social convoys from childhood to adulthood and variation in trajectories of convoy characteristics by gender and race. Multilevel models for convoy structure and composition characteristics were estimated using three waves of longitudinal data spanning 23 years. The regionally representative sample included 193 children aged 8 to 12 in Wave 1 (1992) who were surveyed again in their

Effects of social rank and pubertal delay on brain structure in female rhesus macaques.

Adverse social experience during childhood and adolescence leads to developmental alterations in emotional and stress regulation and underlying neurocircuits. We examined the consequences of social subordination (low social rank) in juvenile female rhesus monkeys, as an ethologically valid model of chronic social stressor exposure, on brain structural and behavioral development through the pubertal transition. Adolescence is a developmental period of extensive brain remodeling and increased emotional and stress reactivity. Puberty-induced increases in gonadal hormones, particularly estradiol (

Evaluating the latent structure of the non-social domain of autism in autistic adults.

BACKGROUND: The social domain of autism has been studied in depth, but the relationship between the non-social traits of autism has received less attention. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) outlines four criteria that make up the non-social domain including repetitive motor movements, insistence on sameness, restricted interests and sensory sensitivity. There is a lack of research into the relationship between these four criteria. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the non-social traits of autism in a large sample of autistic adults. It explo

Voxel-based morphometry multi-center mega-analysis of brain structure in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent and disabling mental disorder, associated with significant psychiatric co-morbidity. Previous research on structural brain alterations associated with SAD has yielded inconsistent results concerning the direction of the changes in gray matter (GM) in various brain regions, as well as on the relationship between brain structure and SAD-symptomatology. These heterogeneous findings are possibly due to limited sample sizes. Multi-site imaging offers new opportunities to investigate SAD-related alterations in brain structure in larger samples. Social structure and Escherichia coli sharing in a group-living wild primate, Verreaux's sifaka.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological models often use information on host social contacts to predict the potential impact of infectious diseases on host populations and the efficiency of control measures. It can be difficult, however, to determine whether social contacts are actually meaningful predictors of transmission. We investigated the role of host social structure in the transmission of Escherichia coli in a wild population of primates, Verreaux's sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi). Using multilocus sequence typing (MLST), we compared genetic similarities between E. coli isolates from different ind

Complex social structure, alliance stability and mating access in a bottlenose dolphin 'super-alliance'.

Large brain size in mammals has been related to the number and complexity of social relationships, particularly social alliances within groups. The largest within-group male alliance known outside of humans is found in a social network (> 400) of Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in Shark Bay Western Australia. Members of this dolphin 'super-alliance' cooperate against other alliances over access to females. Males within the super-alliance form temporary trios and occasionally pairs in order to consort with individual females. The frequent switching of alliance partners sugge

Study Protocol: Homelessness and Health: Integrating Structural, Social, and Behavioral Pathways.

This protocol paper describes the methods of a multi-year study examining individual, community, and structural-level influences on health among people experiencing homelessness in a mid-sized Oregon city. We draw on biocultural theory and method to examine three distinct social ecologies of homelessness in the study setting: unsheltered homelessness, temporarily sheltered homelessness, and permanent supportive or transitional housing. Our mixed-method approach incorporates epidemiological-style questionnaires, biomarkers sampled via finger prick blood and hair, and in-depth case study intervi

An approach-Avoidance structural model of perceived social functioning in physical education.

PURPOSE: This study tested a cross-sectional approach-avoidance model integrating personal responsibility, interaction anxiety, fear of scrutiny, and perceived social functioning in university physical education (PE). METHODS: Participants were 215 students from six intact PE classes. Structural equation models were estimated using maximum likelihood and robust MLM with Satorra-Bentler correction because multivariate normality was violated. Model-based indirect associations were examined with 5000 bias-corrected bootstrap resamples, alongside measurement and sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: Th

Structured decision-making as a framework to incorporate social equity into conservation decisions.

Many conservation challenges require negotiating trade-offs between the needs of different actors. Global frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework explicitly call for diverse participation and social equity in conservation decision-making. Achieving this requires integrating equity into both decisions and decision-making processes. Despite shifts toward strengthening social equity, practical guidance for incorporating equity into conservation decision-making processes remains limited. We argue that structured decision-making (SDM), an organized approach designed fo

[The Relationship between Social and Family Structures and Behavioral Problems in Preschool Children].

BACKGROUND: Behavioral problems in children are indicators of compromised mental health. Their development is influenced by family and social factors, with limited understanding of interactions among family structure, educational status, migration background, and parental employment concerning behavioral problems. These associations were investigated in children between 5-6 years of age. METHODS: Data (n=15,271) were collected between 09/2018 and 08/2019 in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein as part of school entry examinations. Children's behavioral problems were assessed using the Stre

Social-Structural Predictors of Fentanyl Exposure among Street Involved Youth.

ObjectiveThe emergence of synthetic fentanyl has been a main contributor to North America's rising overdose death rates. While increasing attention has been given to drug-related harm among youth, little is known about how social-structural conditions influence their risk of fentanyl exposure. Therefore, we evaluated potential relationships between social-structural conditions and fentanyl exposure among youth who use illicit drugs in Vancouver, BC. Methods: Data were derived from the At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS), a prospective cohort study. The ARYS cohort involves street-involved youth, who us

Structural neural correlates of impairments in social cognition in first episode psychosis.

Several studies have demonstrated that patients with schizophrenia show impairments in social cognition and current evidence indicate that this deficit is associated with abnormal activity in specific brain regions. In addition to functional imaging studies, we believe that the identification of structural correlates of social cognitive processes may help to better understand the neural underpinnings of these specific skills. The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between gray matter density and social cognitive deficits in first episode of schizophrenia spectrum

Altered amygdala structural connectivity and relations to social cognition in frontotemporal dementia.

INTRODUCTION: The amygdala is critical for social cognition and undergoes profound damage in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). While its atrophy is well documented, changes in its structural connectivity and their behavioral relevance remain unclear. METHODS: Using fixel-based analysis and tractography, we examined amygdala connectivity in patients with behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD; n = 21), semantic dementia (SD; n = 19), progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA; n = 18), and 28 controls. Associations with empathy and emotion recognition were explored using partial correlations. RESULTS: BvFTD an

Cerebellum and social abilities: A structural and functional connectivity study in a transdiagnostic sample.

The cerebellum has been involved in social abilities and autism. Given that the cerebellum is connected to the cortex via the cerebello-thalamo-cortical loop, the connectivity between the cerebellum and cortical regions involved in social interactions, that is, the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) has been studied in individuals with autism, who suffer from prototypical deficits in social abilities. However, existing studies with small samples of categorical, case-control comparisons have yielded inconsistent results due to the inherent heterogeneity of autism, suggesting that investigat

Is there an association between family structure and the oral health of socially vulnerable children?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the family structure on the oral health status of socially vulnerable children in the Federal District of Brazil. A total of 471 schoolchildren with a mean age of 8.12 (± 0.90) years were examined for dental caries using the CAST instrument. Dental biofilm and oral pain were also registered. Children's guardians were interviewed about socioeconomic variables and oral hygiene habits. The association between oral pain in the previous 30 days and the child's maximum CAST score were analyzed using the Pearson chi-squared test. Multivariate Poisso
