Social mobility in transition. Value repertoires in higher education and moral meanings of the profession among first-generation graduates in Chile.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how first-in-family graduates incorporate value repertoires during university and attribute moral meanings to their professional activity while transitioning from higher education to employment. Its purpose is to analyse the moral dimension of social mobility, focusing on the valuative frameworks through which graduates interpret their educational and occupational experiences. METHODS: Qualitative fieldwork was conducted between July 2024 and November 2025. Twenty semi-structured interviews were carried out with men and women aged 24-30 who had recently gradu

She made it with her friend: How social object history influences children's thinking about the value of digital objects.

Two studies examine how social object histories from collaborative experiences influenced North American children (N = 160, 5-10 years) thinking about the value of digital objects (48% male/51% female; 51% White/24% Black/11% Asian). With forced-choice judgments, Study 1 found (moderate-large effects) that children viewed digital and physical objects with social histories as more special than objects without such histories. On a 10-point scale, Study 2 found (large effects) that children rated digital objects with positive social histories as more special than objects with negative ones. Overa

The Subjective Value of Product Popularity: A Neural Account of How Product Popularity Influences Choice Using a Social and a Quality Focus.

Research on social influences often distinguishes between social and quality incentives to ascribe meaning to the value that popularity conveys. This study examines the neural correlates of those incentives through which popularity influences preferences. This research reports an functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment and a behavioral task in which respondents evaluated popular products with three focus perspectives; unspecified focus, focus on social aspects, and focus on quality. The results show that value derived with a social focus reflects inferences of approval and reward valu

Perceived Community Support, Users' Interactions, and Value Co-Creation in Online Health Community: The Moderating Effect of Social Exclusion.

Online health communities (OHCs) face the same problem as other social media platforms in terms of decreasing activity and user attrition. Drawing upon organizational support theory, this study explores how perceived community support affects user interactions and value co-creation which in turn influence their continuous participation. OHCs act as both health knowledge-sharing platforms and important social media for patients, and thus, interpersonal interactions in OHCs are categorized into health-related and general topic interactions. Considering the identity of patients, this study also e

Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Program: A Social Return on Investment Analysis Value for Money of the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Program.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, Prostate cancer (PCa) has a high survival rate (96%) meaning men with PCa may live with the impact of the disease for many years, even decades. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) manages two Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing (PCSN) programs: (1) A health service-based program and (2) A telenursing service. There is a paucity of economic evidence regarding the benefits of these programs so Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology was used to determine social value and return on investment. METHODS: A SROI economic evaluation model was developed

Post-weaning social isolation increases the incentive value of nicotine-related contexts and decreases the accumulation of ΔFosB in nucleus accumbens in adolescent rats.

Adolescent social conditions profoundly affect vulnerability to drug abuse. Preclinical studies have shown that preventing social interactions during adolescence increases the rewarding effects of drugs like alcohol, cocaine, or amphetamines, however, little data exist regarding the impact of social isolation on nicotine effects. The current study evaluated the effects of differential rearing conditions during adolescence (isolation or group rearing) on (1) conditioned place preference induced by low nicotine doses (0.1 or 0.3 mg/kg) and (2) sensitization to the locomotor effects of nicotine a

A 45-year follow-up study of adolescent schizophrenia. Part I: Premorbid values of psychological and relational indicators in the context of illness course and long-term social functioning of patients.

OBJECTIVES: Research on predictors of adolescent schizophrenia, especially those based on long-term follow-up studies, is rare in the literature. In our analysis, we examine the relationship between the premorbid functioning of the respondents and clinical and social indicators of the illness course. METHODS: 69 patients at the average age of 16 years (time point 0), hospitalized due to schizophrenia (retrospectively re-diagnosed according to ICD-10 criteria) and re-examined 5 years later (time point 1 - personal examination of 41 individuals), were re-evaluated for clinical and social parame

Predicting local COVID-19 emergences: A time-series classification approach and value of data from social media, search engines, and neighbouring regions.

BACKGROUND: Early warning for known infectious disease threats use methods that focus on detection of outbreaks, often at large geographical scales. However, earlier warning, specifically at the onset of disease emergence (i.e., first case(s)) and at finer spatial scales could significantly improve timeliness and targeting of prevention and control efforts. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that a early classification time-series approach can predict COVID-19 emergence at a local jurisdictional level with a 10-day lead time. METHODS: To predict emergence with a 10-day lead time in Canadia

Toward a Deeper Understanding of Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Events for 10-Year Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk: Subgroup Fairness and Predictive Value of Social Determinants of Health.

BACKGROUND: The American Heart Association's Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Events model offers a modern, race-free approach to risk prediction, but its subgroup fairness and the added value of social determinants of health (SDOH) remain underexplored. METHODS: To evaluate Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Events in 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease prediction regarding fairness and value of SDOH predictors, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of 554 675 adults aged 30 to 79 years, using deidentified electronic health records from Truveta, a multisystem U

Quantity-Sourced or Quality-Sourced? The Impact of Word-of-Mouth Recommendations on China Rural Residents' Online Purchase Intention: The Chain Mediating Roles of Social Distance and Perceived Value.

This study examines how different types of word-of-mouth (WOM) influence online purchase intention (OPI) among rural residents, an area not yet fully explored. Based on social tie strength theory, we classify WOM into "quantity-sourced" (e.g., friends, family, general consumers) and "quality-sourced" (e.g., influencers, celebrities, professionals). We propose a chain mediation model involving social distance (SD) and perceived value (PV). Using survey data from 1005 rural residents in Jiangxi Province, China, and analyzing the data with structural equation modeling (SmartPLS 4), we find that q

The Broader Economic Value of School Feeding Programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Estimating the Multi-Sectoral Returns to Public Health, Human Capital, Social Protection, and the Local Economy.

Introduction: Globally, there are 370 million children receiving school meals every day. Coverage is least in low-income countries, where the need is greatest and where program costs are viewed as high in comparison with the benefits to public health alone. Here we explore the policy implications of including the returns of school feeding to other sectors in an economic analysis. Methods: We develop an economic evaluation methodology to estimate the costs and benefits of school feeding programs across four sectors: health and nutrition; education; social protection; and the local agricultural

Why psychotherapy must exchange personal values for functional virtues.

Contemporary psychotherapy often anchors its practice to the shifting sands of subjective experience. This foregrounds values in an already politically homogenous field, which inadvertently systematises bias in training and practice. Postmodern and constructivist zeitgeists encourage this drift; such influences distance the discipline from its objective and scientific foundations. I propose that we must exchange nebulous personal values for a rigorous, functional conception of virtue to preserve the integrity of the clinical field. By normatively extending Skinner's taxonomy of behavioural sel

ValuesML: A new multilingual dataset for values detection in news and political manifestos.

Values are important building blocks of political ideologies and are frequently invoked in political debates. Yet, because values are abstract, understanding how they are expressed in real-world discourse, and how this varies across contexts, remains a challenge. In this paper, we introduce a large-scale, expert-annotated dataset of value expression in political text, comprising news articles and political manifestos across nine languages. The dataset is grounded in the refined theory of human values (Schwartz et al., 2012) and was developed through an iterative process of annotation guideline

Integrating research on interpersonal and organizational attraction via personality traits and value congruence.

Attraction is a psychological tendency characterized by positive affect, a positive evaluative response, and an approach motivation toward a target (e.g., person, group, or organization). Both interpersonal attraction and organizational attraction fall under this broad construct and serve as antecedents to behaviors aimed at forming formal social bonds with the target (e.g., initiating a close relationship with a person or submitting a job application to an organization). Although these two literatures have developed largely independently over the past few decades, they share substantial conce
