Maternal emotion socialization in early childhood predicts adolescents' amygdala-vmPFC functional connectivity to emotion faces.

Guided by Eisenberg, Cumberland, and Spinrad's (1998) conceptual framework, we examined multiple components of maternal emotion socialization (i.e., reactions to children's negative emotion, emotion talk, emotional expressiveness) at 33 months of age as predictors of adolescents' amygdala-vmPFC connectivity and amygdala activation when labeling and passively observing angry and happy faces. For angry faces, more positive maternal emotion socialization behaviors predicted (a) less positive amygdala-vmPFC connectivity, which may reflect more mature vmPFC downregulation of the amygdala activation

"Strap up:" Sexual socialization and safer sex practices among African American youth in foster care.

Adolescent sexual health is often reflected through a problem-oriented lens. This serves to reinforce prevailing sexual scripts and cultural images of disenfranchised youth. Very little is known about the support young people in foster care, particularly youth of color, need to stay sexually healthy and safe. This article presents data on the sources and types of sexual socialization experiences that supported African American transitional age youth in foster care to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Eighteen African American partici

Avoiding socialization pitfalls in accelerated second-degree nursing education: the returning-to-school syndrome model.

Second-degree students are highly motivated and tend to excel academically. However, nurse educators in accelerated programs face challenges in socializing these students to the nursing role. One pitfall is the hostility that may develop if students perceive a mismatch between their expectations and their new role as baccalaureate nursing (BSN) students in a fast-paced and intense program. This article discusses the applicability of the returning-to-school syndrome model in helping second-degree nursing students maneuver successfully through an accelerated BSN program. This 3-stage model has b

"We fight for what is right": A critical framework of ethnic-racial socialization in early childhood.

The present study proposes a framework of critical ethnic-racial socialization. A pilot study with 74 parents (32% Latinx; 27% Black; 19% White; 11% Asian; 8% Multiracial; 3% indigenous) and their 3- to 7-year-old children (57% girls) conducted in 2024-2025 was used to instantiate the framework. Specifically, behavioral observations of parent-child play served to establish proof of concept. Data were consistent with the ethnic-racial socialization literature (i.e., ethnic-racial heritage, ethnic-racial pride, preparation for bias) and the critical consciousness literature (i.e., critical aware

Racial Stress, Social Support, and Racial Socialization Among Rural Black Mothers: Associations With Preschoolers' Executive Functioning.

Racial stress significantly affects Black mothers and their children. To cope, mothers often use racial socialization strategies, such as preparation for bias, cultural socialization, and promotion of mistrust, to help their children manage race-related stress. Guided by the Racial Encounter Coping Appraisal and Socialization Theory, this study investigated the relations among racial stress, social support, and racial socialization among low-income, rural Black mothers and their associations with preschoolers' executive functioning. The study utilized data from 437 Black mothers and their pres

Fostering the Facilitator: Promoting Clinical Educators' Interprofessional Education Facilitation Skills and Socialization Using Exclusively Online Learning.

Health professions educators can benefit from continuing education to more effectively facilitate interprofessional education (IPE) in clinical settings. Online learning formats enable broader participation and overcome barriers to in-person events, though few studies describe the most effective platforms and methods of online continuing education for this purpose. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a 6-week interactive online program implemented via an integrated online educational platform (OEP) to equip participants with knowledge and skills to better facilitate IPE in cl

Parental depressive symptoms and child psychopathology: Indirect effects of parenting-specific emotion regulation and emotion socialization.

OBJECTIVE: The study explores the associations among parental depressive symptoms, child symptoms of psychopathology, emotion socialization (ES), and parenting-specific emotion regulation (ER) using a novel measure, the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS). BACKGROUND: There is a notable correlation between parental depressive symptoms and symptoms of psychopathology in children. Empirical studies have also observed a correlation in the intergenerational patterns of ER, as well as their relations to ES. Investigating these relations in nonclinical samples is vital for understanding t

Substance use disorder is the outcome of deviant socialization: A prospective investigation spanning childhood to adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Disinhibitory behavior during childhood and adolescence has been frequently shown to amplify the risk for substance use disorder (SUD) in adulthood. This prospective study examined the hypothesis that poor communication with parents and association with deviant peers comprise an SUD-promoting environtype which catalyzes transition of disinhibitory behavior toward SUD. METHOD: Male (N = 499) and female (N = 195) youths were tracked from 10 to 12 to 30 years of age. Path analysis evaluated the patterning of disinhibitory behavior and social environment during childhood on substance u

The Socialization of Young Children's Empathy for Pain: The Role of Mother- and Father-Child Reminiscing.

OBJECTIVE: Empathy for pain allows one to recognize, understand, and respond to another person's pain in a prosocial manner. Young children develop empathy for pain later than empathy for other negative emotions (e.g., sadness), which may be due to social learning. How parents reminisce with children about past painful events has been linked to children's pain cognitions (e.g., memory) and broader socioemotional development. The present study examined how parent-child reminiscing about pain may be linked to children's empathic behaviors toward another person's pain. METHODS: One hundred and f

Social anxiety among East Asians in North America: East Asian socialization or the challenge of acculturation?

North American research has consistently reported higher social anxiety among people of Asian heritage compared to people of Western heritage. The present study used a cross-national sample of 692 university students to explore explanatory hypotheses using planned contrasts of group differences in social anxiety and related variables. The East Asian socialization hypothesis proposed social anxiety would show a linear relation corresponding to the degree of exposure to East Asian cultural norms. This hypothesis was not supported. The cultural discrepancy hypothesis examined whether bicultural E

Moderators of peer contagion: a longitudinal examination of depression socialization between adolescents and their best friends.

This longitudinal study examined peer contagion of depressive symptoms over an 18-month interval within a sample of 100 11th-grade adolescents. Three types of peer contagion moderators were examined, including characteristics of adolescents (social anxiety, global self-worth), friends (level of friends' peer-perceived popularity), and the relationship between them (friendship quality). Measures were collected using adolescents' and their friends' reports of depressive symptoms, adolescents' reports of social anxiety, global self-worth, friendship quality, and a sociometric assessment of peer-p

The Relationship Between Maternal Personality Pathology and Parent Emotion Socialization: The Moderating Effect of Reflective Function.

While abundant research has examined parent emotion socialization (PES) in mothers, only two studies have examined PES in mothers with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and none has looked at its relationship with level of personality functioning-defined personality disorder (PD). Further, no study has assessed the moderating effect of reflective functioning (RF) in this context, which may help elucidate the mentalizing conditions under which mothers with PD engage in certain types of PES. The present study aims to examine the relationship between maternal level of personality functioning

Gender differences in the victim-offender overlap for dating violence: The role of early violent socialization.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious problem in dating relationships among college students. The cycle of violence and social learning perspectives suggest that early violent socialization - inclusive of adverse socialization (i.e., prosocial violent messages, witnessing violence, or victimization by someone other than family) and experiences of child maltreatment - is one of the most robust risk factors for IPV involvement. OBJECTIVE: The effects of early violent socialization were explored to understand the underlying mechanisms that influence victimization, perpetration

Intervening to shape children's emotion regulation: A review of emotion socialization parenting programs for young children.

Emotion regulation patterns are shaped, in part, by the quality of interpersonal interactions during early development. Given the important contribution of caregiver emotion socialization, parenting programs targeting these socialization practices represent an effective method of preventative intervention for childhood difficulties with emotion regulation. This review examines emotion socialization parenting programs that target the development of emotion regulation in young children aged 0-6. Through a systematic search of multiple databases, 1117 articles were retrieved for title, abstract,

Socialization, and its modulation by sex, on the development and recovery of activity-based anorexia in rats.

The activity-based anorexia (ABA) animal model has been used in the laboratory to study the role of excessive physical activity in the manifestation of anorexia nervosa (AN) in humans. Factors of social context are crucial in human health and the emergence of many psychological disorders, which have also been observed in studies using different mammal species that, like human beings, set their lives in groups. In the present study, the animals' social condition was manipulated to observe the effect of socialization in ABA development, and the possible different influence of the variable sex on

Early socialization and environmental enrichment of lactating piglets affects the caecal microbiota and metabolomic response after weaning.

The aim of this study was to determine the possible impact of early socialization and an enriched neonatal environment to improve adaptation of piglets to weaning. We hypothesized that changes in the microbiota colonization process and in their metabolic response and intestinal functionality could help the animals face weaning stress. A total of 48 sows and their litters were allotted into a control (CTR) or an enriched treatment (ENR), in which piglets from two adjacent pens were combined and enriched with toys. The pattern of caecal microbial colonization, the jejunal gene expression, the se
