This study investigated the effect of immersion in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on torque and fatigue resistance of two nickel-titanium files. Size 25 .04 ProFile and RaCe files were immersed in 5.25% NaOCl for 1 or 2 hours at temperatures of 21 degrees C and 60 degrees C. Torque and angle at failure were measured according to ISO 3630-1. Resistance to cyclic fatigue was determined by counting rotations to breakage in a 90 degrees curve with a 5-mm radius. Data were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance. Torsional resistance of both rotaries was not significantly affected by immersion in NaOCl

Reactive chlorine species (RCS) like sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) are potent oxidizing agents and widely used biocides in surface disinfection, water treatment, and biofilm elimination. Moreover, RCS are also produced by the human immune system to kill invading pathogens. However, bacteria have developed mechanisms to survive the damage caused by RCS. Using the comprehensive Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 transposon mutant library in a genetic screen, we identified a total of 28 P. aeruginosa PA14 mutants whose biofilms showed increased susceptibility to NaOCl in comparison to PA14 WT biofilms. In recent years, the environmental impact of pharmaceutical residues has emerged as a pressing global concern, catalyzed by their widespread usage and persistence in aquatic ecosystems. Among these pharmaceuticals, acyclovir (ACV) stands out due to its extensive prescription during medical treatments for herpes simplex virus, chickenpox, and shingles, as well as its heightened usage amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. ACV is excreted largely unchanged by the human body, leading to significant environmental release through wastewater effluents. The urgency of addressing ACV's environmental impact lie

AIM: To report clinical complications (pain, necrotic gingival tissue and bone sequestration) resulting from accidental injection of sodium hypochlorite.
SUMMARY: Root canal treatment is a routine clinical procedure with few reported complications. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is commonly used as an irrigant during the procedure because of its tissue-dissolving, antibacterial and lubricating properties. This paper presents a case in which accidental injection of sodium hypochlorite into the lingual gingiva of a female patient caused gingival and bone necrosis. Surgical intervention was require

A 69-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department 3 hours after ingestion of a bleaching agent containing hypochlorous acid and sodium hydroxide in a suicide attempt. Enhanced chest computed tomography scans taken on admission indicated an edematous esophagus and air bubbles in the mediastinum. He underwent endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation until day 9 because of laryngeal edema. On day 10, his endoscopy indicated diffuse reddish mucosal hyperemia, erosions, and lacerated mucosal lesions in the esophagus that were indicative of grade 2b corrosive esophagitis. Treatmen

Fatty acid chlorohydrins are an emerging class of contaminants formed when hypochlorous acid reacts with unsaturated fatty acids during food processing. While their formation has been reported under high sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl; ≤200 mg/L as Cl2) disinfection of vegetables, much higher levels-≤ 60,000 mg/L of Cl2 or 6% NaOCl-are used to brighten shells. Monochlorohydrins of palmitoleic, oleic, and linoleic acids, along with dichlorohydrins of linoleic acid, were measured in walnuts, pistachios, and hazelnuts after NaOCl bleaching. Formation increased with oxidant dose and kernel accessibili

Candida auris is an enigmatic fungal pathogen, recently elevated as a critical priority group pathogen by the World Health Organisation, linked with its ability to cause outbreaks within nosocomial care units, facilitated through environmental persistence. We investigated the susceptibility of phenotypically distinct C. auris isolates to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and evaluated the role of biofilms in surviving disinfection using a dry-surface biofilm (DSB) model and transcriptomic profiling. Planktonic cells were tested for susceptibility to NaOCl, with biofilm formation using the 12-day DS

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile is a spore forming bacterial species and the major causative agent of nosocomial gastrointestinal infections. C. difficile spores are highly resilient to disinfection methods and to prevent infection, common cleaning protocols use sodium hypochlorite solutions to decontaminate hospital surfaces and equipment. However, there is a balance between minimising the use of harmful chemicals to the environment and patients as well as the need to eliminate spores, which can have varying resistance properties between strains. In this work, we employ TEM imaging and R

The high pathogenicity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is attributed to the production of many virulence factors and its resistance to several antimicrobials. Among them, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a widely used disinfectant due to its strong antimicrobial effect. However, bacteria develop many mechanisms to survive the damage caused by this agent. Therefore, this study aimed to identify novel mechanisms employed by P. aeruginosa to resist oxidative stress induced by the strong oxidizing agent NaOCl. We analyzed the growth of the P. aeruginosa mutants ΔkatA, ΔkatE, ΔahpC, ΔahpF, ΔmsrA at 1 μg/mL

BACKGROUND: To determine the frequency of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) extrusion and evaluate the outcome of the injury.
METHODS: A total of 1123 teeth indicated root canal treatment were included. An open-ended needle was used during/after the instrumentation. Acute burning pain during irrigation was considered as NaOCl extrusion. Negative aspiration was applied for patients with extrusion, and appropriate treatment was planned due to the symptoms. The number of patients who experienced extrusion and symptoms were recorded. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), at P < 0.05, was used to compare the

The subject of this paper is the cultivation of the cyanobacterium Arthrospira (Sprirulina) platensis in olive-oil mill wastewater (OMWW) treated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). The main positive effect of NaOCl on the OMWW characteristics is the decrease of the phenol concentration and turbidity, rendering the OMWW suitable for A. platensis growth. Maximum biomass production (1696 mg/l) was obtained when the concentration of OMWW in the cultivation medium was 10% with the supplementation of 1g/l NaNO(3) and 5 g/l NaHCO(3). However, the addition of NaHCO(3) has no significant effect, indicat
