BACKGROUND: Sodium lactate has been shown to improve hemodynamics and avoid fluid overload. The objective of this study was to confirm a beneficial effect on fluid balance with sodium lactate infusion and to specify whether the advantage of lactate is related to a negative chloride balance, its particular metabolism, or simply its energy load.
METHODS: This was an interventional, randomized, open-label, controlled experimental study. Fifteen female "large white" pigs (2 months old) were challenged with intravenous infusion of Escherichia coli endotoxin. Three groups of five animals were rando

Two trials were conducted to determine the effect of sodium butyrate microencapsulated within triglyceride matrix (Na-butyrate) in the close-up period on performance of dairy cows and rumen papillae development. In trial 1, 26 Holstein-Friesian cows were randomly allocated to 2 groups (13 cows/group) and fed prepartum a total mixed ration (TMR) without or with 300g of Na-butyrate/d from 30 d before expecting calving to parturition. After calving, the same lactational TMR without Na-butyrate was offered to both treatments. Dry matter intake and milk yield were monitored daily to 60 d in milk, a

Metam sodium (MS) is a widespread biocide with a broad-spectrum activity. Here, we addressed the behavioral impact of MS by exposing female mice to 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg of MS during both pregnancy and lactation, and evaluated the oxidative stress as a potential mechanism of MS-induced neurotoxicity. The results showed that MS affected fertility and reproduction parameters as well as some aspects of maternal behavior, especially at high doses. In offspring, MS caused a significant delay in the ontogeny of sensorimotor functions. In addition, treated mice exhibited during adulthood an increase

Rats with chronic inhibition of GABA synthesis by infusion of l-allyglycine, a glutamic acid decarboxylase inhibitor, into their dorsomedial/perifornical hypothalamus are anxious and exhibit panic-like cardio-respiratory responses to treatment with intravenous (i.v.) sodium lactate (NaLac) infusions, in a manner similar to what occurs in patients with panic disorder. We previously showed that either NMDA receptor antagonists or metabotropic glutamate receptor type 2/3 receptor agonists can block such a NaLac response, suggesting that a glutamate mechanism is contributing to this panic-like sta

The synergistic effects of lotus seed resistant starch (LRS3) and sodium lactate (SL; a postbiotics of RS3) on hypolipidemic function and serum nontargeted metabolites of hyperlipidemia rats were investegated. Rats fed a high-fat diet were orally administered with LRS3 (HLRS group) or SL (HSL group) either alone or in combination (HLRSSL group) for consecutive 4 weeks. HLRSSL was found to control weight gain, regulate blood lipid levels, reduce accumulation of fat in liver cells, and improve lesions in rat cardiac arteries, liver, small intestine, and colon tissues more effectively compared to

The effects of high (2.5% of DM) versus normal dietary sodium chloride (NaCl) intake on renal urea-N kinetics and urea-N metabolism were investigated in 9 rumen-cannulated and multicatheterized lactating dairy cows in a crossover design with 21-d periods. It was hypothesized that urinary urea-N excretion would be greater, and BUN concentration lower in response to greater diuresis induced by high NaCl intake. Also, urea-N transport across ruminal and portal-drained viscera (PDV) tissues was hypothesized to be affected by dietary sodium intake. A second experiment was conducted using 8 lactatin

Effects of prepartum energy and of postpartum sodium bicarbonate (0, .75% DM) on health were studied in two trials. In trial 1, 36 cows consumed either 102, 131, or 162% of their energy requirement in the dry period. Postpartum glucose and D(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate levels indicated that 131% group (between wk 1 and 2) and 162% group (over the first 4 wk) were closer to a ketotic state than treatment groups at other times. Displaced abomasums occurred more frequently in the 162% group than either the 102 or 131 group. Sodium bicarbonate did not alter the health. In trial 2, 40 cows were used to ev

INTRODUCTION: Bicarbonate-buffered crystalloids avoid exogenous lactate and have physicochemical properties distinct from compound sodium lactate (CSL), but direct comparative evidence during major abdominal surgery remains limited.
METHODS: This single-center, open-label, randomized non-inferiority trial enrolled high-risk adults undergoing elective major abdominal surgery. Participants received bicarbonate-buffered solution or CSL as the allocated intraoperative crystalloid. The primary estimand was the arithmetic mean difference in standard base excess (SBE) at skin closure (bicarbonate-bu

BACKGROUND: Intravenous fluid therapy represents the most common intervention critically ill patients are exposed to. Hyperchloremia and metabolic acidosis associated with 0.9% sodium chloride have been observed to lead to worse outcomes, including mortality. Balanced solutions, such as Plasma-Lyte 148 and Compound Sodium Lactate, represent potential alternatives but the evidence on optimal fluid choices in critically ill children remains scarce. This study aims to demonstrate whether balanced solutions, when used as intravenous fluid therapy, are able to reduce the incidence of a rise in seru

INTRODUCTION: Dengue shock syndrome (DSS) fluid resuscitation by following the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline usually required large volumes of Ringer lactate (RL) that might induce secondary fluid overload. Our objective was to compare the effectiveness of the recommended volume of RL versus a smaller volume of a hypertonic sodium lactate solution (HSL) in children with DSS. The primary end point was to evaluate the effect of HSL on endothelial cell inflammation, assessed by soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) measurements. Secondarily, we considered the effectivene

To better define the serum osmolar and compositional changes associated with the infusion of a large volume of hypertonic saline solution (sodium of 250 milliequivalents per liter), we compared resuscitation using a hypertonic crystalloid (HSL) to Ringer's lactate (RL) in 52 patients undergoing aortic reconstruction. There were no differences between the groups in any of the preoperative measurements, the duration of operation, operative blood loss or transfusion requirement. The RL group required 9.5 liters of fluid intraoperatively as compared with 6.3 liters required by the HSL group (p les

BACKGROUND: In neuroanesthesia, a prompt emergence from anesthesia is essential for postoperative neurologic assessment. Intraoperative infusion of sodium bicarbonate Ringer's solution (BRS) and lactated Ringer's solution (LRS) have different effects on internal environment, potentially contributing to discrepant recovery profiles. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the recovery of BRS and LRS in patients undergoing craniotomy for supratentorial tumors.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled patients undergoing elective supratentorial tumor resection. Patients were randomized

BACKGROUND: Hypertonic sodium lactate (HSL) has demonstrated beneficial effects in experimental sepsis, improving hemodynamics, modulating inflammation, and supporting cellular metabolism. Nevertheless, prior studies have not specifically addressed microcirculation, despite its critical impairment during sepsis and the absence of targeted therapies. We evaluated the therapeutic effects of HSL in a in vivo resuscitated rat model (Male wistars) of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), with a particular focus on microcirculatory function, followed by ex vivo investigation of sodium lactate on vascul

Heat stress (HS) during lactation poses a critical challenge in swine production, often impairing feed intake, metabolic function, and reproductive performance in sows. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of feed form (mash vs. pellet) and dietary electrolyte balance (dEB; 230 vs. 290 mEq/kg) adjusted with sodium bicarbonate on sow performance, litter growth, immune response, antioxidant status, and gut microbiota under HS conditions. A total of 40 multiparous sows were assigned to four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design: Mlow (mash + 230 mEq/kg), Mhigh (mash + 290 mEq/kg), Plow (pell

Inadequate luteolysis in fertility programs is a problem for lactating dairy cows treated with a single dose of PGF2α. The proportion of cows with complete luteolysis can be increased by administering 2 doses of PGF2α 24 h apart. This study hypothesized that a double dose of cloprostenol sodium (1.0 mg) could take the place of 2 doses 24 h apart due to its enhanced half-life. Cows were allocated to receive 1 of 3 treatments: negative controls: 0.5 mg of cloprostenol sodium (single; n = 337); positive controls: two 0.5-mg doses of cloprostenol sodium 24 h apart (two/24; n = 313); and treated: 1
