PURPOSE: In image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), different computed tomography (CT) modalities with varying image quality are being used to correct for interfractional variations in patient set-up and anatomy changes, thereby reducing clinical target volume to the planning target volume (CTV-to-PTV) margins. We explore how CT image quality affects patient repositioning and CTV-to-PTV margins in soft tissue registration-based IGRT for prostate cancer patients.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Four CT-based IGRT modalities used for prostate RT were considered in this study: MV fan beam CT (MVFBCT) (Tom

PURPOSE: Facial soft tissue prediction in orthognathic surgery could be a valuable aid to preview the results and determine the best surgical treatment. After many years, considerable difficulties are still present in the prediction of the clinical final aspect. The object of the present study was to validate new soft tissue simulation software (SurgiCase CMF; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium), using data acquired by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), that makes it possible to foresee the final result.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with craniomaxillofacial deformations underwent CBCT bef

Soft tissue balance during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures may be challenging to achieve in knees with severe valgus or varus deformities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of navigation in predicting soft tissue release during 90 computer-assisted TKA procedures performed within a 2-year period. Fourteen soft tissue releases were performed, 13 of which were for genu varum, including 9 deep medial collateral ligaments and 4 deep and superficial medial collateral ligaments, and 1 for genu valgum deformity. Forty-one cases were intraoperatively overcorrectable (45.5%),

The influence of antiscatter x-ray grids on image quality in cone-beam computed tomography (CT) is evaluated through broad experimental investigation for various anatomical sites (head and body), scatter conditions (scatter-to-primary ratio (SPR) ranging from approximately 10% to 150%), patient dose, and spatial resolution in three-dimensional reconstructions. Studies involved linear grids in combination with a flat-panel imager on a system for kilovoltage cone-beam CT imaging and guidance of radiation therapy. Grids were found to be effective in reducing x-ray scatter "cupping" artifacts, wit

We studied 53 disabled keyboard operators who complained of pain in the forearms, elbows, wrists, shoulders, and hands. Passive wrist flexion and dorsiflexion impairment to less than 70 degrees due to myofascial shortening associated with an increase in forearm muscle pain on palpation was a useful clinical indicator of injury. Isometric muscle testing was useful in detecting injury to specific muscles. Ligamentous hypermobility of finger joints (72%) and harmful inefficient keyboard styles (intrinsic ergonomic factors) were noted, videotaped, and analyzed. Changes in the workstation (extrinsi

Soft tissue calcifications are frequently encountered in radiographic examinations. Since some of these calcifications are associated with systemic diseases and potentially serious conditions, accurate radiographic diagnosis can assist in managing the underlying pathology. This study aimed to determine the frequency and size of soft tissue calcifications in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans covering either the maxilla or mandible. 420 CBCT scans with a field of view (FOV) of either the maxilla or mandible were evaluated in patients aged 6 to 82 years. Depending on the FOV type, the sc

INTRODUCTION: The reconstruction of both extra- and intra-oral soft tissue defects, particularly in restoring the morphology of the lip and the corners of the mouth, has posed a significant challenge for surgeons. Inappropriate methods often lead to maxillofacial deformity which then causes psychological and functional problems. This study aimed to address the challenge of reconstructing extensive and complex maxillofacial soft tissue defects, mainly focusing on the lip, the corners of the mouth, and the surrounding areas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a reconstruction approach by combi

BACKGROUND: The Le Fort I maxillary advancement and rotational movement have been adopted to treat patients with cleft-related skeletal Class III pattern and anteromedial cheek soft tissue deficiency, but cleft-specific cheek soft tissue prediction data are insufficient. This 3D imaging-based study addressed the issue.
METHODS: 3D craniofacial soft tissue and bone models were created from 32 consecutive patients who received computer-aided two-jaw orthognathic surgery for the correction of cleft-related Class III deformity and cheek soft tissue deficiency. Using superimposed 3D models, the ch

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to evaluate facial bilateral soft tissue thickness in symmetric and asymmetric subjects and to investigate whether soft tissue compensates for skeletal asymmetry.
METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 97 subjects were divided into a symmetry group (GSm) and an asymmetry group (GASm). Seven bilateral points were established. Each point involved 3 variables: hard tissue distance (Hard-D), soft tissue distance (Soft-D), and soft tissue thickness (Soft-Th). Measurements were taken from software-generated multiplanar reconstructions. A pai

The aim of this study was to obtain soft tissue thickness (STTs) of Caucasian males starting from 12 bone landmarks, to allow facial reconstruction and assign an identity to skeletal remains. When a skeleton is found without any circumstantial evidence of identity, through anthropological investigations it is possible to estimate age, sex, and race studying specific characteristics of bones. This first step of identification process helps investigators to narrow down the identity suppositions, but not always forensic analysis guarantees a final positive identification. Moreover, it is possible

PURPOSE: While the trauma computed tomography (CT) head scan is frequently ordered during resuscitation of multiply injured patients, determining when also to order facial CT in these situations can be difficult. Consequently, facial fractures are commonly missed on initial imaging evaluation. In acute trauma situations, facial soft tissue injury markers are often used to aid in this decision. A study was undertaken to identify exactly which facial soft tissue injuries correlate with facial fractures and which did not. The aim of our research was to compare the facial soft tissue injury patter

Accurate imaging of displaced dental materials (DMs) in soft tissues is critical for diagnosis, treatment planning, and preventing complications. The aim of this study was to compare the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and ultrasonography (USG) in detecting DMs embedded in soft tissues, as well as to characterize their imaging features. Fifteen DMs used in restorative, endodontic, orthodontic, and prosthetic procedures were placed in the alveolar mucosa and muscles. CBCT and USG images of DMs were obtained. Two dentomaxillofacial radiologists independently evaluated the images for detecta

Background: An accurate determination of the biological width and the relationship of the cemento-enamel junction with the border of the alveolar bone is crucial during a clinical crown-lengthening (CCL) procedure. The aim of this study was to present a technical note about the retraction techniques in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) prior to CCL, highlighting the significant enhancement in procedural accuracy and predictability that these techniques offer. Methods: Clinical and radiological examinations should be performed before a CCL procedure. It is necessary to determine the length o
