Soil protists - a phylogenetically diverse group of unicellular eukaryotes, encompassing bacterivorous flagellates, predatory amoebae, fungivorous vampyrellids, and parasitic plasmodiophorids - exist at densities ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁸ cells per gram of soil, yet are systematically underrepresented in microbiome research compared to bacteria and fungi. This review presents soil protists as active regulators of microbial community structure, nutrient biogeochemistry, and functional ecosystem resilience, rather than just passive dwellers of the soil. Three interconnected mechanistic aspects are

Lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb) contamination pose a major environmental risk at firing ranges and threaten land sustainability. Methods for the stabilization of metal (loid) contaminants are necessary to prevent off-site migration of metals in surface and ground water or from soil erosion. In the present study, two remediation treatments (ferric chloride/calcium carbonate and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)) were applied to flow-through soil columns containing four types of soils (sand, sandy loam, loamy sand, and silty loam) to study Pb and Sb behavior. Water runoff was continuously monitored

Uranium (U) isotopic signatures and concentration in sediments are widely used as paleo-redox proxies, as the behavior of U is often controlled by bottom water oxygenation. Here, we investigated the processes controlling U accumulation in the sediments of Lake Nègre (Mediterranean Alps, South-East France) over the past 9200 years. Exceptionally high natural U concentrations (350-1250 μg·g-1) allowed the measurement of U along with other elements by high-resolution X-Ray Fluorescence core-scanning. Weathering and erosion proxies (Ti content, Zr/Al and K/Ti ratios) indicate that sedimentary inpu

Soil carbon is an essential aspect of ecosystem health, acting to alter nutrient cycling, agricultural yields, and climatic regulation through carbon dioxide sequestration from the atmosphere in stable organic moieties. To measure current stocks, define the distribution of soil carbon in space and depth, and create efficient management strategies, precise soil carbon characterisation is necessary. This review aims to address the current fragmentation in methods and practices across agroecosystems, attempts to summarise recent developments in soil carbon monitoring tools and critically assess s

The ecological and environmental issues caused by uncontrolled mining in metal-rich areas have raised significant concerns, particularly regarding soil pollution, erosion, and hindered vegetation recovery. This study systematically assessed the impacts of individual and combined applications of lime, earthworm castings, and chicken manure on soil nutrient dynamics, enzymatic profiles, metals mobility, and bacterial microbiota in Pb-Zn contaminated mining soils. Results demonstrated that amendments significantly improved soil properties: pH, cation exchange capacity, total exchangeable base, or

Extensive and rapid changes in various ecosystems under the influence of human interventions and climate change determine the need to locate restoration zones. Intensification of wind erosion and dust storms has been considered as one of the effects of climate change in many parts of the world. The wind direction layer is one of the most important layers in the study of the spatial root cause of the wind erosion problem and dust storms, which has been neglected in many studies. This study presented a simple method for constructing the wind direction layer. Using GIS and multi-criteria assessme

It is widely believed that New Zealand is blessed with large areas of versatile and élite soils, but the reality is that more than 65% of New Zealand's soils have some physical limitation to their use for pastoral agriculture. Failure to build this constraint into farm-system designs compromises the current production base, ongoing production gains and, increasingly, the wider environment in which we live. Pastoral agriculture is placing mounting pressure on soil pore structure and function, a key attribute that governs a wide range of soil services and ecosystem functions. Combatting accelera

BACKGROUND: In phytoextraction methods, the problem is the obtained contaminated plant biomass, the selection of the appropriate species, resistant to the type and degree of contamination, as well as the long time needed to completely clean the soil.
GOAL: when selecting the appropriate method of remediation of soils contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, not only the effectiveness of the method should be considered, but also the degree of contamination, the location of the site and its current and planned use.
METHODS: Descriptive, laboratory and comparative methods were used.

Coccidiodomycosis (valley fever) is a systemic infection caused by inhalation of airborne spores from Coccidioides immitis, a soil-dwelling fungus found in the southwestern United States, parts of Mexico, and Central and South America. Dust storms help disperse C. immitis so risk factors for valley fever include conditions favorable for fungal growth (moist, warm soil) and for aeolian soil erosion (dry soil and strong winds). Here, we analyze and inter-compare the seasonal and inter-annual behavior of valley fever incidence and climate risk factors for the period 1980-2002 in Kern County, Cali

Metal(loid) contamination of soil, resulting from the mining activities, is a major issue worldwide, due to its negative effects on the environment and health. Therefore, these contaminated soils need to be remediated. One realistic method is the assisted phytostabilization, which aims at establishing a vegetation cover on the soil that will reduce metal(loid) bioavailability and spreading through the prevention of wind erosion and water leaching. In addition, amendments are applied to improve soil conditions and ameliorate plant growth. In this goal, biochar and compost showed good results in

PURPOSE: Phosphorus (P) lost from agricultural land by erosion, runoff, throughflow and leaching is of major concern for water resource managers worldwide. Previous study on soils from cropping land of southwest Western Australia suggested P loss as dissolved unreactive P (DURP) via leaching, but the implications for processes and rates of P transport in soils are not known.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two contrasting soil profiles (sand and loam) from cropping land of southwest Western Australia were exposed to artificial rain in packed boxes and field runoff plots to examine P forms and fluxes in

The transition from soil-mantled to bedrock-dominated landscapes is important to hydrology, ecology, and landscape evolution. Where classical theory predicts that this transition abruptly occurs once erosion rates exceed soil production ones, actual landscapes show a much more gradual transition. The Rampart Range, CO, is an unglaciated, forested mountain range with uniform lithology that spans this transition, providing an opportunity to interrogate how topography, soil cover, and forest structure coevolve. Using drone imagery and airborne lidar, we show the utility of object-based methods th

Soils constitute the major reservoir of mercury (Hg) in terrestrial ecosystems, whose stability may be threatened by wildfires. This research attempts to look at the effect of prescribed fire on the presence of Hg in a shrubland ecosystem from NE Portugal, delving into its relationship with soil aggregate size and the molecular composition of soil organic matter (SOM). During the prescribed fire, on average 347 mg Hg ha-1 were lost from the burnt aboveground biomass of shrubs and 263 mg Hg ha-1 from the combustion of the soil organic horizon. Overall, Hg concentration and pools in the mineral

BACKGROUND: In the Mediterranean climate, plants have evolved under conditions of low soil-water and nutrient availabilities and have acquired a series of adaptive traits that, in turn exert strong feedback on soil fertility, structure, and protection. As a result, plant-soil systems constitute complex interactive webs where these adaptive traits allow plants to maximize the use of scarce resources.
SCOPE: It is necessary to review the current bibliography to highlight the most know characteristic mechanisms underlying Mediterranean plant-soil feed-backs and identify the processes that merit

Many peat soils are distributed around plateau lakes, and the reinforcement of peat soils with high organic matter content by ordinary cement cannot meet the actual engineering requirements. In order to obtain better mechanical properties and durability of the reinforcement, this experiment prepared peat soil by mixing humic acid reagent into the alluvial clay soil with low organic matter content. The cement soil samples were prepared by adding cement and ultrafine cement (UFC) by stirring method; the samples were then soaked in fulvic acid solution to simulate the cement soil in the peat soil

The environment of an underground structure is much more complex than the above-ground environment. Erosion processes are underway in soil and groundwater; groundwater seepage and soil pressure are also typical for underground environments. Alternating layers of dry and wet soil have a strong effect on concrete, and they reduce its durability. Corrosion of cement concretes is caused by the diffusion of free calcium hydroxide, located in the pores of concrete, from the volume of the cement stone to its surface, bordering on an aggressive environment, and the further transition of the substance

Karst desertification causes severe soil erosion, hydrological imbalance, and biodiversity loss, thereby threatening ecosystem resilience and agricultural productivity. Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling underpin ecosystem stability, yet how agricultural management practices regulate multi-element cycling in degraded karst agroecosystems remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted a four-year field trial in a karst mango orchard in southwestern China and integrated metagenomic sequencing with comprehensive soil environmental profiling to investigate how C.

Fluoridated apatite (FAP) is the dominant P source for ecosystems. However, the bioweathering of FAP is still not fully elucidated. In this study, phosphate-solubilising fungus (Aspergillus niger) was firstly incubated in soil to examine the weathering of FAP, on both cross and longitudinal sections. It showed that the fungus induced more pronounced erosion channels on the cross section in a P-deficient soil. The relative contributions of biological (phosphate-solubilising fungus) and abiotic factors (CO2 and crystal face orientation) were contrasted. To further investigate the weathering cont

This study provides the first record of helminth prevalence associated with Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) at the southernmost limit of their distribution, in the Beagle Channel, Argentina. Using a non-invasive and indirect nest soil sampling approach, we detected multiple helminth morphotypes, including nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, and acanthocephalans. Nematodes were the most frequently encountered group. Helminth load was greater during chick rearing than in the post-breeding period, likely due to increased fecal deposition and favorable environmental conditions. Parasite
