Measurement of radon concentrations in vegetable and soil, and evaluation of lifetime cancer risk using a CR-39 detector.

Exposure to radon contributes to more than 50 % of the total radiation dose received from natural sources by human beings; therefore, radon measurements are crucial in monitoring human health and safety. It can migrate from the soil into plants, further contributing to human exposure through the consumption of contaminated vegetables. The present study aims to determine the concentration of radon in 18 different types of vegetable collected from Bazyan location in Kurdistan Iraqi region which are frequently consumed because most of the population in Kurdistan depend on those vegetable foods. Radiological impact of radionuclides in Moroccan food crops under semiarid conditions.

Internal exposure to ionising radiation occurs predominantly through the consumption of contaminated crops, and evaluating soil-to-plant radionuclide transfer is essential for radiological risk assessment. This study investigated radionuclide activity concentrations, soil-to-plant concentration ratios (CRs), and the potential annual effective dose from food ingestion in a semiarid agricultural region. High-resolution alpha- and gamma-spectrometry (HPGe) was used to quantify 210Po, 234Th, 226Ra, 228Th, 228Ra, 210Pb, 40 K, and 137Cs in soil and in commonly consumed crops, including coriander, re

Enhanced sorption of trichloroethene by smectite clay exchanged with Cs+.

Trichloroethene (TCE) is one of the most common pollutants in groundwater, and Cs+ can be a cocontaminant at nuclear facilities. Smectite clays have large surface areas, are common in soils, have high affinities for some organic contaminants, and hence can potentially influence the transport of organic pollutants entering soils and sediments. The exchangeable cations present near smectite clay surfaces can radically influence the sorption of organic pollutants by soil clays. This research was undertaken to determine the effect of Cs+, and other common interlayer cations, such as K+ and Ca2+, o

Risk assessment of radionuclides in different environmental matrices in the State of Qatar, Arabian Gulf.

Environmental radioactivity in Qatar arises from a combination of naturally occurring radionuclides (NORM) and technically enhanced NORM (TENORM) associated with industrial activities. This study presents a comprehensive systematic review with quantitative synthesis of radionuclide concentrations across multiple environmental matrices, including soil, sediment, groundwater, seawater, building materials, and marine biota, extracted from research papers published between 1980 and September 2025. Data synthesis reveals those natural radionuclides such as 226Ra, 238U, 232Th, and 40K exhibit modera

A Monte Carlo Method for Estimating Secondary Photon Yields from Beta-emitting Radionuclides Concentrated in Environmental Soil.

External exposure due to secondary photons (predominantly bremsstrahlung) generated from electron source emissions in environmental soil are of concern due to their ability to deposit significant amounts of ionizing energy to organs and tissues within the body. The "condensed history method" employed in many modern Monte Carlo (MC) codes may be used to simulate secondary photon yields (given as photons per beta decay) arising from electron source emissions with relatively few assumptions regarding the secondary photon spatial, energy, and angular dependencies. These yields may in turn be used

Rapid survey of de novo mutations in naturally growing tree species following the March 2011 disaster in Fukushima: The effect of low-dose-rate radiation.

The impact of low-dose-rate radiation on genetics is largely unknown, particularly in natural environments. The Fukushima Dai-ich Nuclear Power Plant disaster resulted in the creation of contaminated natural lands. In this study, de novo mutations (DNMs) in germ line cells were surveyed from double-digest RADseq fragments in Japanese cedar and flowering cherry trees exposed to ambient dose rates ranging from 0.08 to 6.86 μGy h-1. These two species are among the most widely cultivated Japanese gymnosperm and angiosperm trees for forestry and horticultural purpose, respectively. For Japanese flo

Chemical sequential extraction of O horizon samples from Fukushima forests: Assessment for degradability and radiocesium retention capacity of organic matters.

To investigate how radiocesium (137Cs) is retained in the O horizon via interactions with organic matter, we collected O horizon samples in Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and konara oak (Quercus serrata) forest sites in Fukushima during the 8 years following the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. To assess degradability and 137Cs retention capacity of organic matter, we conducted chemical sequential extraction with organic solvent and sulfuric acid, collecting the following fractions: organic solvent extractives (Fraction 1), acid-soluble carbohydrates (Fraction 3), and ac

Influence of group II metals on Radium-226 concentration ratios in the native green plum (Buchanania obovata) from the Alligator Rivers Region, Northern Territory, Australia.

In this study, uptake of Ra from soil, and the influence of group II metals on Ra uptake, into the stones and edible flesh of the fruit of the wild green plum, Buchanania obovata, was investigated. Selective extraction of the exchangeable fraction of the soil samples was undertaken but was not shown to more reliably predict Ra uptake than total soil Ra activity concentration. Comparison of the group II metal to Ca ratios (i.e. Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, Ra/Ca) in the flesh with exchangeable Ca shows that Ca outcompetes group II metals for root uptake and that the uptake pathway discriminated against group

Modelling the contribution of individual radionuclides to the total gamma air kerma rate for the sediments of the Ribble Estuary, NW England.

The aim of this study was to test the performance of a published dose-rate model, investigate the contribution of individual radionuclides to the total gamma air kerma rate (GAKR) and derive external doses to man in the Ribble Estuary, NW England. GAKRs were measured and sediment cores were collected in order to determine radionuclide specific activities with depth. The latter values were used as input data for the external dose-rate model. The model has a slight tendency to over-predict the GAKR, but, on average, the model predictions fall within +/-26% of the measured value. Improvements, in

Assessment of K-40 and Cs-137 radioactivity concentrations and annual effective dose due to ingestion of staple foods in South Korea.

The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) has designated Rice and Napa cabbage, which account for a large proportion of the Korean diet, as staple foods for continuous radioactivity monitoring. Assessing internal exposure from food ingestion is essential for public health and radiation safety. This study evaluated the radioactivity concentrations of these foods and quantified annual effective doses from their ingestion. Samples of Rice and Napa cabbage collected from 15 regions nationwide from 2014 to 2023 by Regional Radioactivity Monitoring Stations (RRMSs) were analyzed for K-40 and Cs-1

Distribution of 40K and 137Cs in food and food additives from western Serbia and associated radiological ingestion risk.

Soil may contain certain concentrations of the natural radionuclide 40K as well as the artificial radionuclide 137Cs, which can accumulate in the edible parts of plants. This can lead to an exceedance of the ingestion dose. In this study, measurements of 40K and 137Cs were conducted for 144 food samples (including fruit, tea, cereals, beans, salt, and sugar) using gamma spectrometry. In addition to food samples, for the first time, the presence of these radionuclides was analyzed in 168 samples of food additives (15 types). The samples were collected in the western region of Serbia between 201

ENHANCED RADIOACTIVE CONTENT OF 'BALANCE' BRACELETS.

During a routine whole body counting measurement of a worker at the Nuclear Research Center Negev, abnormal activities of (232)Th and (238)U were measured. After a thorough investigation, it was found that the radioactivity was due to a rubber bracelet ('balance bracelet') worn by the worker during the measurement. The bracelet was counted directly by an high pure germanium gamma spectrometry system, and the specific activities determined were 10.80 ± 1.37 Bq g(-1) for (232)Th and 5.68 ± 0.88 Bq g(-1) for natural uranium. These values are obviously high compared with normally occurring radioac

Metallothioneins: an unraveling insight into remediation strategies of plant defense mechanisms.

Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly, sustainable way to clean up the environment using green plants that effectively remove and degrade pollutants from soil, water, or air. Certain hyperaccumulator plants can effectively mitigate heavy metals, organic compounds, and radioactive substances through absorption, adsorption, and transformation. This method offers a cost-effective and esthetically pleasing alternative to traditional remediation techniques, contributing to the restoration of contaminated ecosystems. Nanophytoremediation entails combining nanotechnology with phytoremediation technique

Bomb 137Cs in modern honey reveals a regional soil control on pollutant cycling by plants.

137Cs is a long-lived (30-year radioactive half-life) fission product dispersed globally by mid-20th century atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. Here we show that vegetation thousands of kilometers from testing sites continues to cycle 137Cs because it mimics potassium, and consequently, bees magnify this radionuclide in honey. There were no atmospheric weapons tests in the eastern United States, but most honey here has detectable 137Cs at >0.03 Bq kg-1, and in the southeastern U.S., activities can be >500 times higher. By measuring honey, we show regional patterns in the biogeochemical cycli

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in uranium mine: Distribution and influencing factors.

Both heavy metals and radiation could affect the proliferation and dissemination of emerging antibiotic resistance pollutants. As an environmental medium rich in radioactive metals, the profile of antibiotic resistance in uranium mine remains largely unknown. A uranium mine in Guangdong province, China was selected to investigate the distribution and influencing factors of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) including intracellular ARGs (iARGs), adsorbed-extracellular ARGs (aeARGs), and free extracellular ARGs (feARGs). The result indicated that sulfonami

A protocol for the radiological assessment for agricultural use of land in Ukraine abandoned after the Chornobyl accident.

There is a need in Ukraine for re-evaluation of the status of lands outside the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone which were abandoned in the years after the accident. Since the 1991 criteria for zoning were put in place, there has been no re-classification of abandoned lands even though radionuclide contamination density and, for radiocaesium isotopes, mobility have both declined. This study describes the development of a protocol for assessment of abandoned lands in Ukraine based on a 100 ha experimental plot. A simple method of quantification of 137Cs contamination density was developed using extern

Assessment of terrestrial gamma radiation dose rates and its associated hazards in Taraba State, Nigeria.

Natural radioactivity is the major source of human exposure to ionizing radiation, whose level of exposure primarily depends on geographical and geological features of the region. Taraba State is endowed with abundant uranium deposits, which emit gamma rays into the environment. Gamma ray is carcinogenic, and its relation to excess cancer risks in the state is yet to be ascertained. Terrestrial gamma radiation dose (TGRD) rates in Taraba State were assessed with respect to geological formations of the state, using a handheld gamma surveyor. The measured TGRD rates in the studied area ranged fr

Future migration: Key environmental indicators of Pu accumulation in terrestrial sediments of Queensland, Australia.

Plutonium (Pu) interactions in the environment are highly complex. Site-specific variables play an integral role in determining the chemical and physical form of Pu, and its migration, bioavailability, and immobility. This paper aims to identify the key variables that can be used to highlight regions of radioecological sensitivity and guide remediation strategies in Australia. Plutonium is present in the Australian environment as a result of global fallout and the British nuclear testing program of 1952-1958 in central and west Australia (Maralinga and Montebello islands). We report the first
