OBJECTIVES: Vaccination is a critical public health intervention that significantly reduces morbidity and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases. Despite the proven benefits of vaccines, missed opportunities for vaccination (MOVs) remain a significant challenge in many low-income countries, including Somalia. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and identify the factors contributing to MOVs in Mogadishu, Somalia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at various health care facilities in Mogadishu, Somalia from January to March 2024. A total of 234 caregivers of children

BACKGROUND: Dengue infection is a mosquito-borne, endemic viral disease, particularly in developing countries. Here, we report the results of the clinicodemographic, serologic profile and the monthly occurrence of a recent dengue fever outbreak in Puntland State (Somalia).
METHODOLOGY: We analyzed the data of 956 dengue-suspected patients who were investigated using the rapid diagnostic testing (RDT) method for detecting NS1 (dengue virus non-structural protein) and IgM antibodies employing the SD Biosensor Dengue Dou NS Ag and IgM test kit (Germany) at the Puntland Public Health Referral Lab

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The primary domestic animal in Somali communities is the goat. Their main economic importance is as a food source and a main form of agriculture in the country. There has been a recent decline in the goat population in Somalia, which may be due to the shortage of feed and an increasingly contaminated environment that is affecting the population's food supply and nutritional status. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and the factors associated with indigestible foreign bodies (IFBs) ingestion in goats in Mogadishu, Somalia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional

BACKGROUND: The human population of Somalia is vulnerable to zoonoses due to a high reliance on animal husbandry. This disease risk is exacerbated by relatively low income (poverty) and weak state capacity for health service delivery in the country as well as climate extremes and geopolitical instability in the region. To address this threat to public health efficiently and effectively, it is essential that all sectors have a common understanding of the priority zoonotic diseases of greatest concern to the country.
METHODS: Representatives from human, animal (domestic and wildlife), agricultu

BACKGROUND: Using a survey conducted during the 2013-2014 polio outbreak in Somalia, this study examines attitudinal and knowledge-based threats to oral polio vaccine acceptance and commitment. Findings address a key gap, as most prior research focuses on endemic settings.
METHODS: Between November 19 and December 21, 2013, we conducted interviews among 2003 caregivers of children under 5 years in select districts at high risk for polio transmission. Within each district, sample was drawn via a multi-stage cluster design with random route household selection. We calculated the percentage of c

BACKGROUND: Throughout history, physicians of the armed forces have gained experience in tropical medicine during deployment in tropical countries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During deployments in Cambodia and Somalia, dermatologists treated participants of the UN missions and also local people to win their confidence. The experience acquired during these missions is reported.
RESULTS: The dermatologist was mainly confronted with the diagnosis and treatment of infectious skin diseases, including genitourinary diseases. Therapy of parasitic infections rarely imported to Europe was a challenge.

Histoplasmosis is an important systemic mycotic infection with a wide geographic distribution. Its occurrence has been mostly studied in the US (6) and in Central America (6), but very little is known about its distribution in Africa, where a specific variant exists. Skin test surveys in the Democratic Republic of Somali indicate that Histoplasma capsulatum or a closely related agent has a focus in this east African country.

Histoplasmin skin-test was applied to 1014 patients in two different parts of Somalia: in Mogadishu, an arid area, and in Jilib, a southern village on the banks of the Juba river. Among these patients only three gave areas of induration greater than 5 mm in diameter; all reactors were from Jilib. Results of a serological survey (latex-agglutination test) of histoplasmosis antibodies among 203 Somalian patients from three villages in river valleys are compared with the results of 171 inhabitants of the town of Mogadishu. Indirect agglutination antibody titers greater than or equal to 20 were fo

Oral health is a fundamental but neglected component of public health, with important consequences for nutrition, communication, dignity, quality of life, and noncommunicable disease (NCD) prevention. In Somalia, oral health remains poorly integrated into health policy and service delivery within a context shaped by health-system fragility, displacement, humanitarian pressures, and limited workforce capacity. This perspective synthesizes available Somalia-specific evidence alongside modeled national estimates and relevant regional evidence to examine the burden, determinants, access barriers,

BACKGROUND: Health literacy directly influences quality of life through its impact on treatment adherence and self-care management, making it particularly important to investigate this relationship in resource-limited settings such as Mogadishu.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the relationship between health literacy and quality of life among people receiving Haemodialyses.
METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted between January and March 2024 with 143 individuals undergoing Haemodialyses in Mogadishu, Somalia. The Short-Form Health Literacy Instrument and th

Somalia has a low-level HIV epidemic, but low prevalence does not necessarily mean that HIV testing is socially or psychologically low risk. This commentary examines "pre-test fear", defined here as anticipatory concern before HIV testing about possible health, relational, social, or confidentiality consequences of being tested or receiving a reactive result. Somalia-specific evidence documents HIV-related stigma, non-consented disclosure, misinformation, and confidentiality concerns, but direct evidence on pre-test fear and the prevalence or regulation of premarital HIV testing remains limite

Somalia is experiencing a recurrent cholera crisis, with over 18,300 cases and 46 deaths reported in 2023, and a further surge in 2024. The epidemic is primarily driven by poor sanitation, political instability, and climate-induced droughts, with vulnerable populations, particularly children under five and internally displaced persons (IDPs), bearing the highest burden. Overcrowded IDP camps and inadequate sanitation exacerbate the spread of the disease. Despite ongoing vaccination campaigns, laboratory diagnostics, and hygiene interventions, cholera outbreaks persist, highlighting systemic ch

This study investigates how effectively Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has addressed the crisis in Somalia since 1991, using realism theory as its analytical framework. It employs a qualitative case study approach to delve into IGAD's interventions and their implications, conducting an in-depth analysis of IGAD's official documents, resolutions, and crisis-related reports concerning Somalia. By applying realism theory, the study scrutinizes IGAD's actions and motivations from a perspective centered on power politics, highlighting the significance of state interests and regio

Atrioventricular valve parachute deformity is rare and is generally seen in the mitral position, called the parachute mitral valve. It is rare to see it in the tricuspid valve and up to now, there have been approximately 14 cases of parachute abnormalities in tricuspid valves in a literature review. We present here a 21-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with progressive shortness of breath over several months. Despite the absence of chest pain, palpitations, or weight changes, examination revealed a soft, holosystolic murmur at the left lower sternal border. Further inves

We have determined the levels of IgG subclasses and IgE as well as specific antibodies of these isotypes in sera from 22 patients with clinical visceral leishmaniasis (VL) from Somalia. The results are compared with those obtained from 30 Somali and 23 Swedish controls. We found markedly increased concentrations of IgG1 in the VL sera, indicating that the pronounced increase in IgG in VL which is generally considered to be due to polyclonal B-cell activation is mainly restricted to this subclass. The IgG2 concentrations were significantly decreased. The IgG3 and IgG4 concentrations, on the oth

The drug sensitivity of seven Trypanosoma vivax-isolates from Kenya and Somalia was examined. With the exception of diminazene aceturate all commercially available trypanocidal drugs failed to effect a cure. The results suggest the existence of multiple drug resistance of T. vivax-strains, geographically widely distributed along the East African Coast. The isolates were resistant to the recommended dose rates of isometamidium, homidium and quinapyramine. Isometamidium showed no prophylactic properties when tested against one of the isolates. All were sensitive to diminazene aceturate.
