We have recently shown that prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure causes autism spectrum disorders-like behavioral abnormalities and Nissl-positive cell loss in both prefrontal and somatosensory cortices in male mice. We have also found that VPA-induced social interaction deficits are observed in male but not female offspring. This study demonstrated that the exposure to VPA at embryonic day 12.5 significantly decreased Nissl-positive cell numbers in the prefrontal cortex, but not in the somatosensory cortex, in female offspring. These findings suggest that VPA-induced morphological abnormalit

OBJECTIVES: Quantitative sensory testing has mainly used thresholds to evaluate somatosensory sensitivity so far. The variability of different measures from session to session has also been investigated, but the variability of the single individual measures of a threshold or subject-based reports has not been considered. This study aimed to investigate the potential value of threshold variability in one session as a measure of internal consistency in somatosensory function.
METHODS: The standardized quantitative sensory testing battery developed by the German Research Network on Neuropathic P

OBJECTIVE: The authors hypothesized that central factors may underlie sensory deficits in patients with nondermatomal somatosensory deficits (NDSD) and that functional brain imaging would reveal altered responses in supraspinal nuclei.
BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic pain frequently present with NDSD, ranging from hypoesthesia to complete anesthesia in the absence of substantial pathology and often in association with motor weakness and occasional paralysis. Patients with pain and such pseudoneurologic symptoms can be classified as having both a pain disorder and a conversion disorder (Diag

Converging data on focal dystonias suggest a widespread disorder of somatosensory processing. The aims of our study were, first, to assess somatosensory activation patterns in cervical dystonia (CD) beyond the representation of the affected body parts and, second, to search for task-related activation changes induced by botulinum toxin type-A (BoNT-A) therapy. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during electrical median nerve stimulation was employed in seven CD patients and nine controls; the examination was repeated 4 weeks after BoNT-A application to dystonic neck muscles. The pretr

Objective: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative motoneuron disease. As previous studies reported alterations in motor cortex excitability, we evaluate excitability changes in somatosensory system. Methods: We examined 15 ALS patients and 15 healthy controls. Cortical excitability was assessed using paired somatosensory evoked potentials of median nerves. To determine disease severity and functional impairment, we assessed muscle strength and revised ALS-Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R). Results: We found significantly reduced bilateral paired-stimulation inh

BACKGROUND: Alterations in the resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) of several brain networks have been demonstrated in eating disorders. However, very few studies are currently available on brain network dysfunctions in bulimia nervosa (BN). The somatosensory network is central in processing body-related stimuli and it may be altered in BN. The present study therefore aimed to investigate rs-FC in the somatosensory network in bulimic women.
METHODS: Sixteen medication-free women with BN (age = 23 ± 5 years) and 18 matched controls (age = 23 ± 3 years) underwent a functional magnetic

PURPOSE: The oral structures such as the tongue and lips have remarkable somatosensory capacities, but understanding the roles of somatosensation in speech production requires a more comprehensive knowledge of somatosensation in the speech production system in its entirety, including the respiratory, laryngeal, and supralaryngeal subsystems. This review was conducted to summarize the system-wide somatosensory information available for speech production.
METHOD: The search was conducted with PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar for articles published until November 2023. Numerous search terms wer

The clinical utility and limitations of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) studies are reviewed. Somatosensory evoked potentials may help to identify a lesion in the sensory pathways, but do not indicate its nature. In multiple sclerosis subjects, the SEP findings may help to establish that there is a multiplicity of lesions, but multimodality evoked potential abnormalities may occur in other disorders. Somatosensory evoked potential abnormalities do not reflect either the severity or the prognosis of cervical spondylosis and do not reliably permit early recognition of the totality of trauma

It is a common phenomenon that somatosensory sensations can trigger actions to alleviate experienced tension. Such "urges" are particularly relevant in patients with Gilles de la Tourette (GTS) syndrome since they often precede tics, the cardinal feature of this common neurodevelopmental disorder. Altered sensorimotor integration processes in GTS as well as evidence for increased binding of stimulus- and response-related features ("hyper-binding") in the visual domain suggest enhanced perception-action binding also in the somatosensory modality. In the current study, the Theory of Event Coding

Pain is one of the most important yet poorly understood complaints in heritable connective tissue disorders (HCTDs) caused by monogenic defects in extracellular matrix molecules. This is particularly the case for the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), paradigm collagen-related disorders. This study aimed to identify the pain signature and somatosensory characteristics in the rare classical type of EDS (cEDS) caused by defects in type V or rarely type I collagen. We used static and dynamic quantitative sensory testing and validated questionnaires in 19 individuals with cEDS and 19 matched controls.

Classically, neuropathic pain is described as a pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system. However, one must note that the presence of somatosensory pathology alone does not guarantee a progression to neuropathic pain. This is due, in part, to the fact that neuropathic pain is a notoriously complex disease process, involving sensitization of both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Its causes are also numerous and varied, including trauma, the compression of a nerve, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and infections. Due to the various manifestations, causes, and symp

Somatosensory disorders are often present after cerebral stroke. These deficits are associated with patients' disability. Therefore, their rehabilitation takes an importance in recovery program. However, the treatment of sensation remains poorly considered during neurorehabilitation and evidence for active sensory training is limited. Mirror Box Therapy is a simple training used to treat upper extremity motor deficits and pain also in patients with stroke. However, the effects of Mirror Box Therapy on somatosensory impairments in post-stroke patients are not deeply investigated and often exclu

Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a well-established neural signature of automatic change detection in the auditory modality. Growing evidence suggests that analogous responses exist in other sensory domains, including somatosensation. This review provides an initial overview of the somatosensory MMN (sMMN), summarizing findings from both human and animal research concerning its underlying neural mechanisms and functional significance as a predictive error signal. We discuss electrophysiological and neuroimaging evidence identifying primary and secondary somatosensory cortices (S1 and S2) as key ge

In order to evaluate accurately trigeminal nerve damage and the response to microneurosurgical treatment, a reproducible, objective test of trigeminal nerve function is required. This study investigates the use of somatosensory evoked potentials as an objective monitor of trigeminal nerve function after microneurosurgical repair. We examined 10 patients, all but 1 treated for gnathic disorders, in whom a severe iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve occurred unilaterally. One patient underwent partial mandibulectomy with sacrifice of the nerve because of a malignant tumour. A signifi

BACKGROUND: Apart from motor symptoms, multiple deficits of sensory processing have been demonstrated in dystonia. The most consistent behavioural measure of this is abnormal somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold, which has recently been associated with physiological measures of reduced inhibition within the primary somatosensory area. High-frequency repetitive sensory stimulation is a patterned electric stimulation applied to the skin through surface electrodes that has been recently reported to shorten somatosensory temporal discrimination in healthy subjects and to increase the re

OBJECTIVES: Oral behaviors are activities, like gum chewing, teeth clenching, and biting of objects, that go beyond normal functioning demands and contribute to the onset of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Somatosensory amplification refers to the tendency to experience somatic sensations as intense, noxious, and disturbing and is related to bodily hypervigilance. Clinical experience suggests that individuals with bodily hypervigilance also present with occlusal hypervigilance and continuously check their occlusion. This study aimed at investigating whether somatosensory amplification and t

OBJECTIVE: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked lipid storage disorder showing a high prevalence and early occurrence of painful neuropathy. Early detection of this likely underdiagnosed disease is an important approach because a causal therapy is available.
DESIGN: We used a quantitative sensory testing to determine the detailed somatosensory profile of male Fabry patients and compare this profile with somatosensory profiles of other painful sensory neuropathies (SN).
RESULTS: Within this pilot-study, the profile revealed a small-fiber sensory neuropathy selectively affecting C- and A-delta fi
