A guide to the effective use of otoacoustic emissions.

Otoacoustic emission test instruments are now entering routine audiological practice. Two general classes of technique are in use in laboratory work--those employing spectrum analysers to observe the continuous generation of OAEs, both stimulated or unstimulated, and those using transient stimulation and waveform averaging to extract a delayed OAE or "cochlear echo" waveform from ear canal sound. Both methods have particular advantages in clinical applications. The transient OAE type of method has proved very effective in screening applications, particularly in neonates. It is possible to perf

Glottic closure and high flows are not essential for productive cough.

For about 150 years, there has been emphasis on the importance of glottic closure and high flows in coughing. During voluntary coughing in normal subjects, the main expiratory flow usually begins as thoracic and abdominal pressures are rising. However, sometimes it starts at peak pressure whereas at other times flow and pressure rise together. Plateau flow in single coughs remains relatively constant in the face of large changes in pressure. In a group of coughs following a single inspiration, the fall in pressure is less during plateau flow. Consequently, for the same oral flows, it is likely

On the blind recovery of cardiac and respiratory sounds.

We present a method for smart auscultation by proposing a novel blind recovery of the original cardiac and respiratory sounds from a single observation mixture, in the framework of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF). The method learns the basis spectra of the mixing sources in unsupervised or semisupervised fashion depending upon the applications. A modified NMF technique is proposed, which enforces the spectral structure of the target sources in mixture factorization, resulting in good separation of target sources, even in the presence of nonstationary noise. Moreover, data is processed i

The use of bronchial challenge to diagnose asthma in preschool children.

Wheezing and respiratory symptoms are very common in preschool children, and the ability to diagnose asthma correctly is important. This review describes an approach to the diagnosis of asthma in preschool children by means of an inhalation bronchial challenge. The child is exposed to increasing doses of challenge agent until wheezing is detected at a dose below that at which normal subjects respond, thus indicating bronchial hyperreactivity. The technique was originally developed using simple stethoscope auscultation of the lungs together with recording of respiratory rate and oxygen saturati

BioNet-A: Ultrasonic echo representation network for target discrimination using active SONAR.

Ultrasonic echoes provide critical cues for object perception, yet their millisecond duration and frequency-specific structure violate assumptions of conventional spectrogram-based convolutional models. Existing biomimetic front-end systems, including auditory spectrograms, cortical wavelets, and the biomimetic BioNet, either under-utilize model capacity on brief echoes or impose frequency shift-invariance suited to vocalizations but detrimental for echo discrimination. This study introduces BioNet5-A, a biomimetic encoder optimized for ultrasonic echoes. BioNet5-A is derived from an autoencod

A biologically inspired system differentiates plants by classifying binaural audio-frequency echo sequences with error detection and resilience.

A biologically inspired system (BIS) classifies binaural audio-frequency echo sequences to recognize two plants that differ mainly in leaf size. The hierarchical BIS system is implemented with two stages. Stage 1 classifies binaural echo spectra with a pair of ear-specific trained single-layer perceptrons. Stage 2 compensates for limited classification accuracy by detecting binaural classification errors and accumulating classification votes by forming a random walk with drift that approaches one of two absorbing boundaries to differentiate the plants. The random walk provides error resilience

Effects of Angle of Epiglottis on Aerodynamic and Acoustic Parameters in Excised Canine Larynges.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to explore the effects of the angle of epiglottis (Aepi) on phonation and resonance in excised canine larynges. METHODS: The anatomic Aepi was measured for 14 excised canine larynges as a control. Then, the Aepis were manually adjusted to 60° and 90° in each larynx. Aerodynamic and acoustic parameters, including mean flow rate, sound pressure level, jitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency (F0), and formants (F1'-F4'), were measured with a subglottal pressure of 1.5 kPa. Simple linear regression analysis between acoustic and aerodynamic parameters and the Ae

Vocalisations of the bigeye Pempheris adspersa: characteristics, source level and active space.

Fish sounds are an important biological component of the underwater soundscape. Understanding species-specific sounds and their associated behaviour is critical for determining how animals use the biological component of the soundscape. Using both field and laboratory experiments, we describe the sound production of a nocturnal planktivore, Pempheris adspersa (New Zealand bigeye), and provide calculations for the potential effective distance of the sound for intraspecific communication. Bigeye vocalisations recorded in the field were confirmed as such by tank recordings. They can be described

Acoustic analysis of trill sounds.

In this paper, the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of steady apical trills--trill sounds produced by the periodic vibration of the apex of the tongue--are studied. Signal processing methods, namely, zero-frequency filtering and zero-time liftering of speech signals, are used to analyze the excitation source and the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract system, respectively. Although it is natural to expect the effect of trilling on the resonances of the vocal tract system, it is interesting to note that trilling influences the glottal source of excitation as well. The excitation chara

Analysis of swallowing sounds using hidden Markov models.

In recent years, acoustical analysis of the swallowing mechanism has received considerable attention due to its diagnostic potentials. This paper presents a hidden Markov model (HMM) based method for the swallowing sound segmentation and classification. Swallowing sound signals of 15 healthy and 11 dysphagic subjects were studied. The signals were divided into sequences of 25 ms segments each of which were represented by seven features. The sequences of features were modeled by HMMs. Trained HMMs were used for segmentation of the swallowing sounds into three distinct phases, i.e., initial quie

Vocal tract resonances and the sound of the Australian didjeridu (yidaki) I. experiment.

The didjeridu, or yidaki, is a simple tube about 1.5 m long, played with the lips, as in a tuba, but mostly producing just a tonal, rhythmic drone sound. The acoustic impedance spectra of performers' vocal tracts were measured while they played and compared with the radiated sound spectra. When the tongue is close to the hard palate, the vocal tract impedance has several maxima in the range 1-3 kHz. These maxima, if sufficiently large, produce minima in the spectral envelope of the sound because the corresponding frequency components of acoustic current in the flow entering the instrument are

M-mode color Doppler ultrasonic imaging of vertical tongue movement during articulatory movement.

To observe and estimate the movement of the tongue, ultrasonic investigation is the most harmless real-time monitoring procedure for analyzing articulatory movements. Color Doppler ultrasonic imaging is special in that it can only sample a moving target, and it can indicate the velocity and direction of the target by color and brightness in real time. This study assessed and demonstrated the validity of M-mode color Doppler ultrasonic imaging to observe the movements of the tongue during syllable repetition tasks performed by normal subjects and dysarthric patients, those affected by amyotroph

Vocal tract filtering and the "coo" of doves.

Ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) produce a "coo" vocalization that is essentially a pure-tone sound at a frequency of about 600 Hz and with a duration of about 1.5 s. While making this vocalization, the dove inflates the upper part of its esophagus to form a thin-walled sac structure that radiates sound to the surroundings. It is a reasonable assumption that the combined influence of the trachea, glottis and inflated upper esophagus acts as an effective band-pass filter to eliminate higher harmonics generated by the vibrating syringeal valve. Calculations reported here indicate that this is i

Vocalization-correlated respiratory movements in the squirrel monkey.

Respiratory abdominal movements associated with vocalization were recorded in awake squirrel monkeys. Several call types, such as peeping, trilling, cackling, and err-chucks, were accompanied by large vocalization-correlated respiratory movements (VCRM) that started before vocalization. During purring, in contrast, only small VCRM were recorded that started later after vocal onset. VCRM during trill calls, a vocalization type with repetitive frequency modulation, showed a modulation in the rhythm of the frequency changes. A correlation with amplitude modulation was also present, but more varia

Motor stereotypy and diversity in songs of mimic thrushes.

The relationship between the motor and acoustic similarity of song was examined in brown thrashers (Toxostoma rufum) and grey catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) (family Mimidae), which have very large song repertoires and sometimes mimic other species. Motor similarity was assessed by cross correlation of syringeal airflows and air sac pressures that accompany sound production. Although most syllables were sung only once in the song analyzed, some were repeated, either immediately forming a couplet, or after a period of intervening song, as a distant repetition. Both couplets and distant repeti

Electroglottogram waveform types of untrained speakers.

Electroglottography is a useful, non-invasive technique that can assist in the assessment of vocal fold dysfunction. However, if it is to become a useful clinical tool, there is a need for normative studies of the electroglottogram waveform types that characterize different groups of speakers. This report compares the electroglottogram waveform types characterizing one trained professional voice user phonating in 15 experimental sessions under various fundamental frequencies, intensities and voice qualities with those obtained from 52 untrained non-professional speakers.

Effect of mouth-opening levels on sound field gain in the ear canal.

The human external auditory canal can become deformed when the mandible moves, and this changes the sound field in the external auditory canal. This study measured the sound field gain in the external auditory canal while varying mouth-opening in three levels. The mandible was fixed at the 1/3, the 2/3, and the maximal mouth-opening levels. Seven 65-dB tones of 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 Hz, which are the sound pressure level and frequency range when people are talking at a normal level, were adopted as the sound stimulus to measure sound field gains at 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm to
