Soy protein has been used in infant feeding in the West for nearly 100 y. Soy protein infant formulas have evolved in this interval to become safe and effective alternatives for infants whose nutritional needs are not met with human milk or formulas based on cow's milk. Modern soy formulas meet all nutritional requirements and safety standards of the Infant Formula Act of 1980. They are commonly used in infants with immunoglobulin E-mediated cow's milk allergy (at least 86% effective), lactose intolerance, galactosemia, and as a vegetarian human milk substitute. Largely as a result of research

OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare the characteristics of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) caused by rice and cow's milk/soy.
DESIGN: Retrospective study of children presenting with FPIES to the Children's Hospital at Westmead, NSW, Australia, over a 16-year period.
RESULTS: There were 14 children with 26 episodes of rice FPIES compared with 17 children with 30 episodes of cow's milk (n = 10) or soy (n = 7) FPIES. Children with rice FPIES were more likely to have FPIES caused by other foods (36%) than children with FPIES caused by cow's milk/soy (0%). Rice caused more episo

This comment by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) Committee on Nutrition summarizes available information on the composition and use of soy protein formulae as substitutes for breastfeeding and cows' milk protein formulae as well as on their suitability and safety for supporting adequate growth and development in infants. Soy is a source of protein that is inferior to cows' milk, with a lower digestibility and bioavailability as well as a lower methionine content. For soy protein infant formulae, only protein isolates can be used, and minim

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the anaphylactic sensitizing power of cow milk, soy milk, casein hydrolysate, and a new cow collagen soy protein hydrolysate (CCSPH) infant formula in a guinea pig model of anaphylactic sensitization. Various groups of animals were fed these formulas for 37 days following which they were challenged intravenously either with the sensitizing constituent or one of the infant formulations. The results of these studies indicate a high degree of sensitizing capability of cow milk formula (80% fatal and 20% nonfatal) with reactions in guinea pigs chall

Obesity and constipation can alter the intestinal microbiota composition, affecting intestinal barrier integrity, immune function, and metabolic processes. Numerous studies have suggested that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium could increase short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, thus improving the intestinal microbiota composition, mitigating obesity, and protecting the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of Lactobacillus plantarum TWK10 (TWK10) on gut dysbiosis, obesity, and constipation induced by a high-fat diet and loperamide. Over a 5-w

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Milk is a fundamental source of nourishment for infants until they are weaned. It plays a role in enamel remineralization, inhibits bacterial adhesion, and prevents biofilm formation. Although lactose present in milk is a fermentable sugar, certain conditions can promote caries formation from milk consumption. As milk is widely consumed by children, this study aims to evaluate how different types of milk influence dental health.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 40 primary incisors were included in the study, which were initially tested for mineral content and pH. These teeth were

The global market for plant-based drinks is experiencing rapid growth driven by consumer demand for more sustainable diets, including vegetarian and vegan options. Soy beverages in particular are gaining popularity among individuals with lactose intolerance and milk protein allergies. They are considered an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamin B, unsaturated fatty acids, and beneficial phytochemicals such as phytosterols, soy lecithins, and isoflavones. This review presents a comprehensive market survey of fifty-two soy beverages available in Spain and other European countries. Th

Fat and protein derived from milk are prime ingredients in a frozen dessert such as ice cream conferring multiple desirable functionalities. However, this frozen dairy dessert is not suitable for individuals having lactose intolerance, cow milk allergy, or vegans. Hence, the study aimed to formulate dairy-free frozen desserts using plant oils and plant proteins and compare their physicochemical characteristics and sensory acceptance against an ice cream containing milk fat and milk protein. Results indicated that the types of protein significantly influenced the physicochemical properties and

The aim of this research was to determine the optimal medium for Exopolysaccharides (EPS) production by a Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus ropy strain isolated from a locally produced commercial fermented milk, in reconstituted skim milk (RSM) 10% (w/v), milk whey (MW), and soy milk whey (SMW), under optimal growth conditions for this strain. Milk whey was made by coagulating fresh milk using papaya latex 3% (v/v); soy milk whey was obtained from tofu household industry. The chemical composition of the substrate media was determined by proximate analysis, and sterilization was accom

A 54-year-old man had been drinking approximately 1.2 L of soy milk (equivalent to approximately 310 mg of isoflavones) per day for the previous 3 years. He then developed erectile dysfunction and gynecomastia. On an examination in our department in May, blood tests showed low gonadotropin and testosterone levels, indicative of secondary hypogonadism. He stopped drinking soy milk on his own in June of that year. When he was admitted in August, blood tests showed an improved gonadal function. Secondary hypogonadism caused by the excessive intake of isoflavones in soy milk was diagnosed. In men,

BACKGROUND: Soy-based infant formulas are increasingly popular, but data regarding their effects on neurodevelopmental outcomes during early childhood is scanty.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of consuming soy-based infant formula at 9-12 mo after birth on the subsequent development of epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, and developmental status.
METHODS: This nationwide retrospective administrative study used health screening examinations and linked insurance claims data of children born in Korea during 2008 and 2009. Infants who received soy formula were compared with th

For a minimum of one month (mean, 54 days), 287 infants and children less than 8 years of age were fed an isolated soy-protein formula. Prior to entry into the study, a cow's milk formula was being fed to 71%, a soy formula to 9%, and cow's milk or other formulas to 20%. Intolerance to cow's milk was reported in 35% of the patients, symptoms indicative of cow's milk intolerance in 23%, diarrhea or gastroenteritis in 18%, a family history of allergy in 13%, and insufficient weight gain, intolerance to other formulas, or constipation in 11%. The patients showed normal increases in weight and len

Considering the increase in the prevalence of early childhood caries, the effect of various types of frequently consumed infant milk formulas on the development of Streptococcus mutans biofilm was examined. Three samples of cow's milk-based formula (Aptamil, Bebelac, Nan), two samples of soy-based formula (Biomil soy and Isomil soy), and three samples of formulas containing hydrolyzed proteins (Aptamil HA, Bebelac HA, Nan HA) were selected. After adding the formulas to the Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 35668) culture media, the degree of bacterial biofilm formation was explored by assessing the o

The composition of specialized formulas for infants who experience malabsorption or formula intolerance is described in detail. The limited studies of efficacy, as well as a rationale for selecting an appropriate formula for infants with malabsorption or formula intolerance, are discussed. Infants with symptoms of diarrhea or emesis may have intolerance to milk lactose or milk protein. Soy formulas contain no lactose or cow's milk and should be the first choice of an alternative feeding because of cost and convenience. Some infants may be intolerant of soy as well as cow's milk protein. They b

Very fussy or extremely fussy infants were randomized to receive: soy-based formula (Soy: n = 82) or a partially hydrolyzed cow's milk protein (CMP), low-lactose formula (PHF: n = 77) in a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel, prospective 28-day feeding trial. Body weight and infant formula tolerance were reported. Adverse events were recorded throughout the study. A significant reduction in mean scores of fussiness, gas, spit-up, and crying compared with baseline measures was observed in infants who received either Soy or PHF within 1 day of formula intake; improvement in symptoms

There has been a recent increase in the consumption of cow's milk substitutes, specifically plant-based beverages, which have erroneously been named "plant milks". Plant-based beverages do not have a standard of identity, and so their nutritional composition can vary from one brand to another, even within the same category. The aim of the present narrative review was to produce a technical opinion to serve as a frame of reference for sustaining the recommendation of soy plant-based beverages. Food allergy is a relatively rare and sometimes violent reaction of the immune system to food proteins. The first report characterizing soy allergy appeared in 1934. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations includes soy in its list of the 8 most significant food allergens. At least 16 potential soy protein allergens have been identified but their relative clinical significance is unknown. Conversely, soy has a long history of successful use in managing cow's milk allergies in infants. To better predict the utility of soy proteins for controlling food allergy, it is important
