Lyme disease in New York State: spatial pattern at a regional scale.

Lyme disease occurs commonly in New York State, but its geographic distribution is heterogeneous. Over each of nine consecutive years, incidence rates from 57 New York State counties were subjected to spatial autocorrelation analysis. Although the epidemic advanced during the study period, the analyses reveal a consistent pattern of spatial dependence. The correlation distance, the distance over which incidence rates covary positively, remained near 120 km over the nine years. A local spatial analysis around Westchester County, a major disease focus, indicated that the global correlation dista

Emergence of raccoon rabies in Connecticut, 1991-1994: spatial and temporal characteristics of animal infection and human contact.

The North American raccoon rabies epizootic continues to expand, now affecting most of New England. In 1990, raccoons became the vertebrate most often reported rabid in the United States. Emergence of this zoonosis poses increasing, but poorly defined risks to humans. This study analyzed various demographic, environmental, and behavioral factors associated with animal infection and human exposure before and during the epizootic in Connecticut. Rabies virus infections among terrestrial vertebrates were analyzed from 1985 through 1994. From March 1991, when the first case was diagnosed, through

Spatial and temporal analysis of disease occurrence for detection of clustering.

Data on disease occurrence often consist of the number of cases recorded in a set of regions during each of several time periods. In this paper a method of analysis of such data is proposed which allows one to distinguish and test for spatial clustering, temporal clustering, and space-time clustering of cases. Departures of case numbers from expectation are partitioned into region and time period main effects and region-by-time interactions. Spatial and temporal relationships among regions and time periods are incorporated by pooling estimates over neighborhoods. In addition to providing tests

Space-time and family characteristics of meningococcal disease and haemophilus meningitis.

Significant space-time clustering was found for cases of meningococcal disease. This result was entirely accounted for by the occurrence of a small number of sibling pairs, and clustering was no longer found when these were omitted from the analysis. Meningococcal disease should still be regarded as potentially communicable between siblings. However, in this region of England the current level of infectivity of the disease outside the family is low. Space-time clustering was not convincingly demonstrated for haemophilus meningitis. This emphasizes that, even with diseases of known microbial ae

Investigation of geo-spatial hotspots for the occurrence of tuberculosis in Almora district, India, using GIS and spatial scan statistic.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has declared tuberculosis a global emergency in 1993. It has been estimated that one third of the world population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis. The emergence of TB/HIV co-infection poses an additional challenge for the control of tuberculosis throughout the world. The World Health Organization is supporting many developing countries to eradicate tuberculosis. It is an agony that one fifth of the tuberculosis patients worldwide are in India. The eradication of tuberculosis is the greatest public healt

[Geographical expansion of visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Pernambuco].

This study aimed to demonstrate the geographical expansion of visceral leishmaniasis in Pernambuco State, Brazil. With data on the number of visceral leishmaniasis cases notified from 1990 to 2001, maps showing the biannual evolution of the geographical distribution of the disease per municipality were elaborated. A map of the cumulative geographical distribution of the cases registered during the whole period was also constructed. From 1990 to 2001, 1,737 cases of visceral leishmaniasis were notified in Pernambuco. In 1990, 15.2% (n = 28) of the municipalities notified cases of the disease. I

Modelling exposure opportunities: estimating relative risk for motor neurone disease in Finland.

This paper addresses the issues surrounding an individual's exposure to potential environmental risk factors, which can be implicated in the aetiology of a disease. We hope to further elucidate the 'lag' or latency period between the initial exposure to potential pathogens and the physical emergence of the disease, with specific reference to the rare neurological condition, motor neurone disease (MND), using a dataset obtained from the Finnish Death Certificate registry, for MND deaths between the period 1985-1995. A space-time approach is adopted, whereby patterns in both time and space are c

[Characteristics of clinical features of tick-borne encephalitis in Crimea].

The analysis of data collected from the clinical epidemiological and virological surveys in 1985-1988 on the incidence of arbovirus infection in population provided evidence for circulation of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in the Crimea. Etiological relevance of TBE virus in the onset of the diseases was revealed. Clinical picture of TBE in the Crimea is characterized by severe forms and diphasic fever with the relapse running more grave and protracted course.

Spatial-Temporal Cluster Analysis of Childhood Cancer in California.

BACKGROUND: The observance of nonrandom space-time groupings of childhood cancer has been a concern of health professionals and the general public for decades. Many childhood cancers are suspected to have initiated in utero; therefore, we examined the spatial-temporal randomness of the birthplace of children who later developed cancer. METHODS: We performed a space-time cluster analysis using birth addresses of 5,896 cases and 23,369 population-based, age-, sex-, and race/ethnicity-matched controls in California from 1997 to 2007, evaluating 20 types of childhood cancer and three a priori des

Worldwide hotspots and ecological drivers of canine Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato: Space-time scan statistics and Maxent modelling from a systematic evidence base.

Cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato remains a major One Health concern. In this study, we conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review (Web of Science, 2005-2025) and compiled a georeferenced dataset of canine E. granulosus s.l. infections derived from published field studies. After data curation and harmonization, 169 location-year records (representing 159 unique spatial locations in SaTScan) were included in the space-time analysis. Space-time cluster detection using SaTScan (Bernoulli model; annual resolution) identified 14 clusters, of which 13 were statistic

High-risk clusters, temporal trends, and demographic determinants of tuberculosis in the Federal District, Brazil, 2010-2024.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in Brazil, strongly influenced by social and territorial inequalities. Although the Federal District has a relatively low overall incidence, pronounced internal heterogeneity may conceal localized areas of sustained transmission. This study aimed to analyze temporal trends, spatiotemporal distribution, and demographic and epidemiological determinants of TB incidence in the Federal District, Brazil, from 2010 to 2024. We conducted an ecological study including all newly reported TB cases. Temporal trends were assessed using time-series d

Spatial variations in motorcycle registrations and the mortality of motorcycle users due to traffic injuries in Argentina.

Although pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists account for nearly half of those killed in traffic accidents in the world, little is known about the geographical distribution patterns of these vulnerable roadway users. Using spatial scan statistics techniques, the spatiotemporal variations in the mortality of motorcycle users in Argentina were analyzed for the period 2001-2010, as well as the spatial variations in mortality and motorcycle registration from 2007-2010. Two space-time clusters with a high risk of death for motorcycle riders were identified during the second half of the study per

Assessing the role of long-distance translocation and spatial heterogeneity in the raccoon rabies epidemic in Connecticut.

Spatial heterogeneity and long-distance translocation (LDT) play important roles in the spatio-temporal dynamics and management of emerging infectious diseases and invasive species. We assessed the influence of LDT events on the invasive spread of raccoon rabies through Connecticut. We identified several putative LDT events, and developed a network-model to evaluate whether they became new foci for epidemic spread. LDT was fairly common, but many of the LDTs were isolated events that did not spread. Two putative LDT events did appear to become nascent foci that affected the epidemic in surroun

Listeriosis in the United States: 1980-1982.

The magnitude of the public health problem associated with Listeria monocytogenes in the United States has been unknown, and the route of transmission is largely undetermined. Investigations of recent outbreaks, however, have shown that the infection can be foodborne. We estimated the expected frequency of sporadic listeriosis based on hospital discharge data from the Professional Activity Study of the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities for the years 1980 through 1982. The incidence of listeriosis was 3.6 per million population per year, with an estimated 800 cases occurring in

Use of a prospective space-time scan statistic to prioritize shigellosis case investigations in an urban jurisdiction.

OBJECTIVE: A prospective space-time scan statistic was applied to Chicago's 2002 shigellosis surveillance data to evaluate its utility in objectively describing clusters and assisting in the prioritization of investigations. METHODS: The prospective space-time module of SaTScan, a free software available online, was used to identify "live" clusters of disease, meaning cases that were current as of the date of the analysis and strongly associated in place and time. Fifty-two separate space-time analyses were run; one simulation for each week of 2002. Identified clusters were described in terms
